I can't believe I stumbled upon this website.  Was a dependent in Goeppingen from 1974-1978.  My dad was SFC Edward L. Shepherd (RIP), and had a sister, Ruby, and brothers Persey and Eddie.  We went to Stuttgart American High School and had a ball in Goepp.  Sneaking into 7 Schwaben and the Hit Club, hanging out at the gym with Pitts (sp) and the theater- where I worked for a while. If you remember us, pls email me.

I was in HHQ 144th Sig Bn July 67 to October 69, SGT E5. Known as "Racke's Raiders" when I first arrived, for the colorful scarves and the legend of how we were appointed the 4th AD's honor guard. I worked at S4, requisitions and inventory, later property book, and later a lot of pickup and dropoff. The CMMI following the Soviets' invasion of Czechoslovakia was a huge shock to us, and many of us who were on rotation to Vietnam got re-rooted in the madness following CMMI. Lots of funny stories - following the Mormons around with members of the intel house across the street, spraying SMAJ's daughter and her friend with water from the upper barracks floor, getting kicked in the shin by a captain while drawing a 'peace' sign at the Rod and Gun club. Hearing Colonel Ashby(?) saying "naughty, naughty" when describing an incident in town at command reveille. Wild times.

Wishing everyone a blessed Christmas. I was at Cooke from April 59 till Sept 60. Since we were a small detachment at Hq Co 126 th Ord. Bn we ate in the 404th MP messhall. I still have the menus for Thanksgiving and Christmas 1959 with a wonderful message by Capt Riley the commander of the 404th.  Today in our politcally correct world he probably would not have been able to write about the Prince of Peace as he did in that message.  Great time in  my life!  I was only 19,had pushed up my draft. As it turned out it was a good move as it helped me grow up.

404th MP Co. from Sept. 1962 - April, 1964, with TDY jaunts to Ulm and Bamberg mixed in. Will never forget Ma Weigle.  She treated us all like family.  On my 21st birthday, the only gift I received on the day was a shot glass in the shape of a boot, from Mama.  I still have it safely stored.  She made a second home for all of us, most of us lonely (although we would never admit it at the time) and missing family and friends.

Best schnitzel sandwiches, and the only place for a little ratzaputz when it was a bit cold outside.  The unofficial patron Saint of the 404th.  God bless you.

This homepage is just wonderful. My hometown is Göppingen but live
now in the black forest. I worked at the Flugplatz from l958 until l96l.
I was hired as a Sales clerk and worked in the Delicatessen store next
to the PX. I have so many wonderful and happy memories about the
american people I never forget. Every time I visit Göppingen I am
driving through the former Cooke Barracks thinking of the time I have
been lucky to spent 3 years of my life there working. I imigrated to
New York in Juli l961. Went to California in l968.Had to return to
Germany in 1977 due to Illness of my parents.
I enjoy so very much reading the comments here and appreciate
that the Army people seem to have had also good memories of my
hometown. I am visiting the USA every other year. Would be wonderful to be able to join some day the reunion  of the 4th Armoured Division.

I served with A Co. 1/26th from May 73 - November 76.  Probably some of the best years of my life, in looking back.  4 years with the 1st Inf. Div. Fwd, college and a career in banking followed those golden years of service.  I would enjoy revisiting the area and of course enjoying one more boot of beer at Gasthaus Stern.  If anyone has pictures of what it looks like today, I would thoroughly enjoy seeing those.  Blue Spader.

I was stationed at Cooke Barracks from 1972 to 1974 with the 1st Inf. Div. Fwd. and have actually been living and working nearby in Vaihingen for the past 3.5 years.  One of the first things I did after moving here in 2009 was to take a drive back to Göppingen to see what the old place looked like.  We were previously located on Sheridan Kaserne in Augsburg before the ASA moved in there.

Stumbled upon this site while trying to locate some of my old friends to see if anyone might be interested in meeting up here for a reunion.  I intend to trawl the guestbook and hope to find a few names from the past.

Hello!  I was stationed at Cooke Barracks from Dec. 1977 through June 1980 with the MP Platoon.  I saw two 2005 entries on this site from Jason Tlusty and Rick Wagner.  I may have already put my entry in a few years back but not sure so I'll do this one.  A few of the names not mentioned by Rick that I can recall are: SP4 Tom "Moose" O'Connor; SSG. Richard Clark; SSG Pope; SGT Merrill and his wife who also made SGT but forget her name; SP4 Scheirholt; SP4 "CB"; SP4 Schindler; SP4 "Doc" Dougherty, and a guy who's name I forget was a Ranger who OJT'd with us for awhile in 1978 and went on the river crossing exercise.  Anyway, there were some fun times and I have numerous pictures from those days and would love to share and trade some as well.  Please drop an e-mail if you'd like and would enjoy hearing from anyone around back then to share a few stories.  Thanks!

We took 3 trips, traveling with another couple, and saw all of Europe on $10 a day, camping some, but have the fondest memories.

Have been back twice since on vacations, and really feel like it is one of our former homes.

Went back to Cooke Barracks on one vacation and the guard would not allow us on base and told us "Yankee Go Home"

Other than that all GREAT MEMORIES!

I cant remember exactly which Company he was in, but believe it was Company B, at that time we named it the Big Bad B.
I do remember his name and know that he was from San Juan, Puerto Rico, he moved back to Fulton Street, Brooklyn, New York. At that time we lost touch, but I have always remembered him and now, after nearly 50 years I would love to find him. If anyone knows who it may be, please contact me and I´d be forever thankful. 504th Admjn Co. '61 - '64. I worked in AG Publications for a couple of years and then Admin Svcs, PSD until leaving in June, '64 to go to OCS.
I married a woman from Nuernberg and our first daughter was born at the hospital at Stuttgart (she just turned 50).
I have a terrible memory for names but if you drop a line I'm sure I'll then have total recall.

I was stationed at Cooke late '50 - '52, I was MTR SGT, A Btry. 899 AAA, attached to the 28th Div. The 28th was the first USA Division stationed at Cooke since WWII. I'm now 84 years of age and remember Geoppingen, it's wonderful people, along with my memorable time at COOKE.
Love to hear from anyone there at that time -

Our family was stationed at Cooke Barracks from February 1983 to August 1989 with 4/16 Inf.  My husband, Dave, ended his tour there as the Battalion Motor Sergeant.  I worked at the DEH as secretary to Major Bill Ryan.  Bill has since passed away.

Our children, Sharal and Anna, now live with their husbands and children in Jacksonville, NC.

Our memories of Cooke Barracks were the best of our military career.  We returned in November 2001 while Sharal was living at what remained of Robinson Barracks while her husband was stationed at Patch.  What we saw broke our hearts.  The Cooke Barracks we remembered was trashed.  There was nothing left to show our grandson of our time there.

My Cooke Barracks adventures started after basic trainning and advanced training (General Clerk, MOS 700) at Ft. Jackson,SC; a 10 or 11 day boat trip to Bremerhaven, and an 10 or 11 hour train trip to Goeppingen. I arrived in Mar.,1961. I was assigned to Co B, 4th QM Batt.  My first job was in Graves Registration, under Sgt Nash and Sgt Collins as a clerk. Sometime later, I was assigned to QM Supply, under Sgt Hinkle and Sp4 Ellison. Sgt. Hinkle (now passed 2 yrs ago at 81) had a Christmas party for us at his appartment. It bwas there that I met his German babysitter. We started a friendship that has lasted to this day, even though we are married to others. In 1966, she came to the US at her expense, by freighter and I got her a job as an Au Par. We just exchange birthday and Christmas cards, with notes, but no phone calls( our spouses are aware of it).   While at  4th QM, the Berlin Wall went up, about 6 months after I arrived. We were all confined to post for 2 weeks because we were on a Red Alert.  During this time Red properganda would come on the radio after midnight. The theme song was "Don't Fence Me In" by Bing Crosby and The Andrew Sisters. We had our own barber shop in our barracks. It was run by a Polish National by himself and was under the stairwell.  He got kicked out after awhile.  Some of the guys I remember were Himmel, Shoemaker, Cpl. Sapp, Sp4 MacComber, Lundmark, Senors Ramos and Pena( I was Senor Macko, to them) and Battesta.  The EM Club had some star talent visit our post. I  remember seeing Dinah Washington and her husband, Slappy White. I think the Platters played there too,but no Bob Hope.  In the Spring (I believe) of 1962, I transferred to the 504th Admin. I was assigned to the Inspecter General's Office as a clerk. I read  "Rog" "Clem" 2002 or 2003 post and was left off along with Gary Krouse(the driver) Sgt. "Spike " Jones, and Sp4 Joe Rivers. Sgt. Mayberry, the Office Manager, constsntly whistled "The Gypsy", Maj. Carberry talked about his Koren War experences and Sgt. Kennedy seemed like a happy-go-lucky guy. His wife Frances was expecting their first child when  they left, after an earlier miscarriage. I oftened wondered how these career soldiers made out in the Viet Nam Era.  The Christmas of 1962 involved another party(at the Col's house). There was a picture taken of all of us and I've miss placed it recently.  Some of the guys I rember in the 504th are Bob Gutt, who worked in postal, the Himmelman brothersand a Himmelmann. My Barry Dolan story took place in the showers. He dropped his soap and was between me and effiminate Sgt. When I kicked it back, it landed between the Sgt.'s legs. I made Barry Nolan blush and curse.  Once in the breakroom, Tom Malloy had an Epileptic seisure. It was an interesting experience to observe.  He trained a room mate as to what to do during an episode. When Dave Harris was on his way home to Carolina, he stopped off and visited my parents before he finished his journey home. Another guy I remember was Ted Mc Quade.  For awhile, there were some Irish girls working in another town. They would hang out with us because we all spoke English real good.  My last 6 months were spent as a company mail clerk.  We became  a staging area for new assignments , so I got alot of mail for guys that hadn't arrived yet. One name that always stuck with me was a Ralph R. Reed because his wife had a pretty script and wrote him everyday, so his mail piled up before he arrived.  Unfortunly, he was killed in a car crash, shortly after I got home and was laid out  near were  I lived.  I paid my respects, but never got to meet his widow.  My son-in law found this website when he asked my the name of the post I was stationed at in Germany and found it on his smart phone.

Stationed at Cooke Barracks from August '56 to December '57. My wife and I lived in Goeppingen at the Hotel Garni and enjoyed living with the folks in town. My section had good officers, good leadership.
Also enjoyed touring the countryside and visiting Stuttgart, Ulm, Munich, Augusbug, etc.
Once drove to Rome and back.

For the last half of 1973 and all of 1974 I was in the helicopter support company there. Our helicopter hanger was at the top of the hill on the right as I recall.

I started out as a 45J20, aircraft armament subsytems mechanic, but after I was there a few months the command staff found out I could type, so I became the Avionics Platoon Clerk for the remainder of my time there.

Close to the base entrance, my barracks was right across the street from the CID headquarters.

My good friends there included George, Arthur Gordon Stewart III, Ralph (Tony) Nuzzo, Hank, and a few others whose names I can no longer remember.

If you are reading this and you think you might remember me, I was originally from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania - yes, that home of the groundhog (in case that helps jog your memory).  If you read this and do remember me, please be sure to send me an email, as the one I have listed here I have had for 30 years, and I check it often.

Was wondering if anyone may remember my dad, he was in the 9th INF. co K from 1954 to 1956. Dad passed away the day after thanksgiving last year.  I am trying to gather any information for my self and my 2 sons on their grandfather.  Dad use to talk about how he was a driver for a Major, no name that I can remember.  He also liked to tell the story about being out on maneuvers and waking up to a lot of snow when the night before it was a nice night out.  He also had some pictures of him and his buddies drinking beer, not sure where or when it was taken.  I can also remember him saying the first thing they did once they were in Germany was to visit the concentration camps.  His name was Victor, Vic to his friends.

My wife, Julie and 1 year old son, David, were there with me for a while. We lived on Ulrich Strasse in Goepping. Max Steininger was our favorite taxi driver. He would always be extra friendly and helpfully.
I remember quite well, eating at Maggie's, the Yak Shak, and the mess hall.
MSG Morton was "Tops" in my book.
I also recall that the OIC of the DMMC was a fine man named Major Lord.
I was friends with Larry Miller, Jerry Witowski, Kim Karl, Jay Croco (not sure of that spelling, "sorry",) "Doc" Purvis, Karen Korey and many others.
If there's anyone out there, give me a shout out!

Served in C Co 4/16 from Jan 89 until May 91.  Made a lot of good friends and had a great time.  Hard to believe it's been over 20 years.  I've got a lot of great stories from my time over there, but one of my favorites is from my first night in Gurp.  We were expressly forbidden from leaving Cooke Barracks until we had completed the two week German language program, but we said screw that & walked out anyways.  We had no idea where we were going or what we were doing, but we certainly didn't want to stay on post.  So we just wandered around town aimlessly in the cold here and there.  While visiting one of the local sex shops, Brett (Thompson) asked the owner where the girls were at.  What he meant was "where can we find a club with beer and girls," but the guy sent us to a whorehouse, which none of us expected or had money for.  So we wandered around until we found Club Remise, the local punk bar, which was pretty wild, to say the least.  Loud music, plenty of drinks, and people barfing and passing out all over the place.  We had a great time.  We got lost on the way back, and decided to cross the railroad tracks to get where we needed to be.  Big mistake.  All of a sudden one of those high-speed trains came barreling down at us, and we were right in the middle & couldn't tell which track it was on.  So everyone hauled ass as fast as we could go to get across, except for Brett, who was paralyzed with fear.  When the train went by, we thought he had been run over because he didn't make it across with the rest of us, but he was still standing there in the middle.  We were freaking out, but not as bad as him.  He said he couldn't decide which way to go, so he just froze up.  That train missed him by inches.  It was the first of many crazy nights to come.  I miss that place.  Where are all my Charlie Cougars at?

Hello,

I'm helping a friend to locate John Gregory.
Approximate age: 88
Approximate birthyear: 1924

Probably 41th Infantry Regiment, based in Goeppingen, Germany

Cooke Barracks since 20th April 1945.

Later lived in Ebersbach / Fils nearly Goeppingen

Was active in theatre productions

In either 1979, 1980, or 1981 – Cooke Barracks sponsored American/German friendly week.

John Gregory was one of the Guest of Honor speakers at a Boxing Match Ceremony. Probably was a boxer since he was one of their Guest Speaker.

2012 – 1945 =  67 years ago

67 + 21 (average age of service member) = 88 approximate years old

2012 – 88 =  1924 approximate birth year.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Stan Miller

B company's Commander was at our first reunion 5 years ago. Our Company was A Company, Capt Richard Robbins.  We've lost a number of our Company's soldiers the last few years. I am looking for my American grandfather, John Gregory, or his next of kin. He served for the US Army, probably 41th Infantry Regiment, based in Goeppingen, Germany, Cooke Barracks since 20th April 1945.
There he met my grandmother Ingeborg Pfeiffer. She played theatre with John´s best friend Emil Kocib who was based in Göppingen too. Emil passed away in 1979.
John Gregory fathered a child, my mother Gudrun Pfeiffer. She was born on Sept/21/1949.

Later he lived in Ebersbach / Fils nearly Goeppingen. In his next relationship with another woman he was the father of twins (born in 1950 or 1951, most likely girls) and during the American and German friendly weeks at the Cooke Baracks he was a guest of honor at a boxing match in 1979 or 1980 or 1981 which could mean that he was connected to the sport of boxing.

I have no financial interests but would like to know just the other part of my heritage.

I was at Cooke Barracks from about late 65 till I left the army in mid 68. Lots of very fond memory there. Lots of beer and food and considerable experimentation. I stayed in Germany when I got out and spent some time looking around the world. At the time I had the attitude that the Army was terribly restrictive and dangerous. But being there opened my eyes to other cultures and people I could have never imagined in south Louisiana. It changed my life for the better. I am thankful for that For some reason I can't really understand I get a little teary when I think of my time in Goppingen.

I was stationed at Cooke Barracks from May 1969 through August1971.

I worked as an air traffic controller.  At the time it was the headquarters for the4th Armored Division.  It was basically away to chauffer generals and big wigs in small aircraft and helicopters to thevarious areas where the 4th AD was doing maneuvers.  It was a great place to be.

I purchased a Triumph motorcycle from the factory inEngland and traveled Europe on it. I attended the October fest in Munich twice, and came home with 40 beer steins.

Goppingen was a great place to be.  I went to various Guesthouses at least once aweek and loved my Army tour.

Reluctant RA. Did not enjoy the Army, but truly enjoyed my time in Germany. I have read 700 previous posts before i signed in.  I am surprised how few of my fellow HHC 4th AD fellows have signed in!!!  I was pleased to be reminded of the local hot spots such as Seben Schwaben where I first tasted Ratzenpussen (sp?)  yuk; it made a better lighter fluid than palatable drink.  But i will always remember the Bier!  especially the 10oz bottles of Lowenbrau that we could buy for 17cents a bottle (after bottle refund).  Hello to my old HQ 4th AD clerks Rick Lawrence, Bob Quaempts, Bob (from Minnesota), Pete Henry from New York, Johnny Adkins from Mt Airy NC, Loren Emerich, Rick from Cuyahoga Falls, David Barber who lived up on Hohenstaufen, SP4 Simpson from Cal State LA, Lt Wolfgang P May, Lt Fitch from Mich, My favorite officer ever Major Vaclav Hradecky who translated radio broadcasts from Czechoslovaka during the 68 Russian invasion (very dramatic) Col AAkula the Finnish G2 and a fine man, MSG Brass (what a piece of work), and a sergeant major from Korea whose name i forgot but whose personality i never will forget.   I bought a 67 VW from a rotating SP5 Henry Buffano from Chicago; drove that car until 74 in SoCal. I was stationed at Cooke Barracks from 1975 until 1978.  I was assigned to the 18th AG.  Cpt Burl McGee was the C.O.  He was easily one of the finest men I have ever met.  He damn near talked me into re-enlisting.  Lt. Julie Collins was my boss
at the AG shop.  A great officer and friend.  Her boss, Major DiValentin, should have been AG of the Army.  Cool cat.  Top Tanner, a true gentleman (who kept me out of big trouble) was our First Sergeant.  He did some TDY with my late brother.  Top Marshall followed Top Tanner.  He was a great guy with much humor and patience.
Bob Romero, my platoon sgt, was a great pal and drinkin' buddy at the Rod and Bottle.  Jimmy Brock's wife made great chicken and dumplings.  Sid Thomas, a crazy guy that would make pig noises during PT.  Top would get pissed because he could never catch him.
I had a wonderful time there.  Too many memories and friends to recount.  I loved Germany. The food, the beer, the schnapps, the beer, the history, beer, schnapps, natural beauty, the beer.
And...the beer.  Best of all...I enjoyed the company of my fellow soldiers.  Bless all of you.  Happy New Year

your_message: Hello Sir,
I along with my Nerphew are researching my Father's past. I know he was stationed at Goeppingen as an MP. His name was Mieczyslaw Gniadek. I was hoping you would have a roster of possible men that were stationed and served there @ 1945-1950. My Father was a very quiet person so I really know not much of his experiences other than what was told to me by my Mother. Both of my parents are now deceased. Dad passed away in 1989, but I still have his hat and uniform jacket with the insignia sewn on the left sleeve. Near the shoulder there is a patch in the shape of a shield it is cut in half at a slant with the number 40 in the Grey field and the bottom half of the slant has the number 13 in a red field. Below this patch is a red bar outlined in what looks like silver thread. On the front right breast of the jacket there is a silver eagle and where the head is it has the letter G under it the letter T and below that is a star with a blue field w what appears to red stripes to the !
left and right. Curiously, there is also a small lapel pin that appears to be like the letter P that at the bottom splits like into an anchor or a whales tail split ? (Make sense?) Either way, I would appreciate any and all information you could send my way. I am 60 years old and through the encouragement of my nephew, who was also an MP in the Army, just stumbled upon your website and am excited that there may be something here? Also I remember in 1972 my parents and I traveled to Germany and we passed by the gates to the Base but if I remember correctly, I don't think my Dad wanted to go inside or he had some reservations? Gee I am just not sure. Well Thank You in advance for any and all info you can send my way.
Sincerely,

Mieczyslaw F. Gniadek (aka: Mickey)
