I saw Russ Carpenters post and thought Id help him out a little....I wonder if you remember your old SWO buddies next door in that horrible hanger the Army put us in......You might remember TSgt Driskell and Spec Trump.  I remember Capt Rhodes and McClendon, the ALO NCOIC Barry (cant remember his last name now) and of course playing flag football and busting up my ribs many times along with going out to the field and seeing you guys slack off (haha) staying in gasthaus's instead of camping out with us.  Smart I think......anyway if you get this....send me a line.

I was stationed at cooke barracks from Sep 1975 until Jan 1977. I was part of the 18th Adjutante General Corps. I worked in the trailers next to the gym. My office was called ADP (AUTOMATED DATA PROCESSING)  I operated a keypunch machine. We filled in info on IBM cards to order stuff for the commissary as well as other items. I enjoyed my time there and only wish I had traveled more to other countries in Europe. My roomate was Larry Lee, A great guy and mentor. Some of the people that worked at ADP were Scottie Cannon, Rosalind Dotson, Mike Bach, Teresa Bach, craig Fisher. Don't know if any of these people visit this site but if you do drop me a line.

I served in the 80s with Aco 4-16 Inf. I remember some of the greatest people I ever served with. These guys were a blast!! Hello to Jantz Morey, you were my best friend. Alton Suggs was one of the best soldier I ever met. Alton was a soldiers soldier. There were so many names to remember. If you remember me drop a line. I never meant for the army to be a career but it was the best decision I made. I am a retired police officer now looking for a second career and I will most likely never have the fun I did as a soldier or a cop. God bless and take care. RANGER FORWARD!

Checking in before the end of 2010. Was a medic assigned to HHC 4/16th INF. from 1989-1990 and stayed Army Reserves through May2000. I retired in June 2010 from the US Coast Guard Reserves after completing Two tours in Kuwait.

quite a few of the medics have set up a facebook link and you can find us through my link on there.

We are trying to locate Alphonso "Alf" Hernandez, David Scott (PAJB), Michael Bjarnason, Largent, Humm and others to list. Add to the list these days are also Frank Estrella.  The Mortar Plt guys from 88-90 are planning a June 2011 reunion in San Antonio, TX. Which anyone else is also invited.  Look for "CAMP WORDEN CHAMPS 1989" ON facebook for these guys.

The "HHC 4/16th INF BN Medics" also have a Facebook site titled as such and ask for the medics (and others whom remember us) to look that one up as well!!

I am also in touch with some of the motar platoon from that period and Recently located Michael Corey. MSG (Retired) Edwin Carter, Scott Orrahood and "Ricky" Alvarado.

I served at Cooke Barracks in 1953-54 with the Adjutant Generals Office. I met two people,Roy Cleek Jr and Charles Coard Jr, that changed my life as they convinced me to go to college.
I went to the University of Southern California and and was on the Apollo Lunar Landing program as Division Director (Vice President). Left the space program in 1971 and co-founded Churchill International, the first international high technology investment company in Silicon Valley.
Returned to Germany as Chairman and CEO of Churchill International with a joint venture with BMW AG and Dresdner Bank, (Technologie Investions GmbH) the second riskapital company in Germany in Berlin from 1984-1989.
Thus my memories of Goppingen (especially 25 Olglastrasse) and Charlie and Roy are forever appreciated

Hello everyone. i´m wolfgang from göppingen. i was born in 1979, so i was a little boy when the big red one leaved göppingen. my parents have and had a garden in the rossbachstrasse and for me and my sister it was great to watch the soldiers and cars and tanks when they drove by. we always ran to the street and waved the soldiers (i´m not sure if the word "wave" is correct.) in a summer in the eighties, a few soldiers cleaned the small creek together with the "göppinger gartenfreunde". and also there was the "deutsch-amerikanische-freundschaftswoche. it was great, and the barracks and the soldiers have been an important part of my childhood. miss the time when 1st infantry division was here. wish you the very best, thanks for these childhood-memories.

One of my good friends [also from California], was Dave Decker [a heavy-set guy]. I have tried to find Dave here in California for about 30-years now... He seems to have disappeared !?!? During the time at this Base [1971-1972], I was from Fremont, California. Anyway, if any of my coworkers/fellow military brothers read this & would like to get back to me, then please do !!! I will answer any & all responses. Thanks, Bill Bright.

I remember conducting classes in Map Reading and Compass, Chemical, Biological & Radiologic Warfare, and the Russian Mission. I think I put everyone to sleep.  But mostly I remember cutting wood on  Saturday Mornings at a German's House in a small town outside of Goeppingen and drinking Apple Cider when it was so very cold. Boy we got drunk. I was in Goeppingen from January 1958 until May 1960.  I was in HQ & HQ of the 4th QM Battalion.  I also served as Sgt. of the Guard and Barracks CQ  for Company A.

We opened the place after WW II in 1951. I was a S/Sgt in Charley Battery, 899 AAA AW Bn of the 28 Infantry in 1951.  I am now 78 years old and still have good memories of the place.  There was not much at Cookes Barracks when we arrived or the town of Goeppengin (not a cold beer in sight)  Thanks to us, we talked the Germans into cooling units being installed.  The Germans weren't happy with our being in their country and I would have liked to stay in the USA! Everything turned out OK by the time I was rotated back home.  All 3 of my brothers fought in in WW II and came home with 6 battle stars each and only 1 Purple Heart.  I've never been back and I'm aware that it's has been turned around to a "sports park.  Would like to hear from a native Gerp and bring me up to date.  Thanks!     I did sign in around about 20 years ago but could not locate it.

Assigned to HHC, 1st IDF, Cooke Barracks Sep. '73 - Dec. '76
I worked in G3 Opns/Training the whole tour. Met a lot of great people during that tour. Lived in the little village of Kuchen for about 6 month with the Seitzer family before I moved into housing. From my attic bedroom window I had a picture postcard view of Mt. Hohenstaufen and from the Living room another fantastic view of the castle ruins over Giesgligen. I thought Cooke Barracks was great because of it's size. We had the 1/26 Blue Spaders and Support units for the Division Fwd. Not to big and not at all dreary as some places GI's were stationed. I loved Tony's Italian restaurant down town. Loved hiking the trails around the base and housing area with my daughter. Bought many antique clocks while I was there. On my second tour, I was able to visit Frau Seitzer and we both had a good cry at a all too brief reunion. My family was her last American renters as family moved in after I left. My only regret was I didn't have time to visit Cooke Barracks. Watching the videos, I recognized the front gate and thought I caught a shot of the Division HQ building. Great website. Thanks for the memories.

I grew up in Goeppingen, was married in 1958 in the chapel on the post and came to America in 1959. My (now) ex-husband, Stan Trefren played in the 4th AD band, under CWO Gibson. Got to travel with the band a couple of times. What fun!
I was confirmed in the church, where the helicopter tragedy occurred.

I lost touch and am looking for a girlfriend from Goepp that also married an American in the late 50's/early 60's from Cooke Barracks. Doris Fischer - Richardson ( no relation ) They ended up in in the service in Texas and had two daughters Angelika and Nora - and she had a sister named Elli, who also married a serviceman from Cooke Barracks. I know it's not much to go on, but maybe it rings a bell with someone. Help!

Loved and fondly remember the post, NCO club, PX, the little movie theater etc, we had such a good time. I was really heartbroken when I found everything deteriorated/and or gone when I visited the post with my grown children in 1999, to show them where their father was in the service. I did take some pics. I understand, after the Americans moved out, it was used by the city as a a type of camp for refugees/displaced families. The church was an empty shell with grafity and the movie theater was in shambles. What a shame. The motorpool bldg and the administr bldg, where my husband worked, were still standing.

It is good fun to partake in the reminiscing and happy memories people had of Germany, Goepp and Cooke Barracks. I miss it too. Great web-site, glad I stumbled on to it. Thanks!

I was stationed at Cooke Bks from 1976-1978. I was a SP4 and 5 while there. I worked as a stenographer for the Command Staff when MG Faith was there and worked at JAG as a legal clerk after that.  Both offices had fantastic people in them and I have very fond memories of both places.  The post itself was beautiful.  I saw more of Germany once I reenlisted and went to Wuerzburg but Goeppingen was my introduction to being in Germany and being away from home.  I wasn't a club-er so I spent my time playing tennis, going to the golf club and post theater.  I even liked the mess hall very much - we had very good cooks and it was a social event going there. I Remember Father Gus from church; I found that I could run two miles without dying; I learned it is a good thing to know about people and cultures that are different from mine.  It is good to remember this place.  Anybody that remembers me and wants to talk, please email.  Best wishes to all!

It has been almost 60 years since I set foot in Cook Barracks. In Nov,'51, The 28th Division HDQ was the first Active Combat Division to occupy Cook since the end of WWII, I was with the 899th AAA also assigned there. Other components of the Division were stationed in nearby Kaserns. At that time Cook was bare bones compared to what it later became. I want to thank Dave Wisniewski the founder and of course John Francis for the Chronology, of which I made a small contribution. Without the endeavours of those gentlemen, this site would have never been as successful as it is. God Bless all who at one time or the other served at Cook, enjoyed it, the Town of Geoppingen and all it had to offer. Thanks to all and good luck, Former Sgt. Richard Robison, Mtr. Sgt, A Battery, 899th AAA Battalion '51-'52

Cooke Barracks was a great place to be stationed although I spent the majority of my assignment there in the field (Graf, Hohenfels, Vilseck and every firing range in between). I was a Medical NCO (SGT) assigned to 4/16 Inf with the great LTC Honore as our Bn Cdr; yeah he was a hard ass, but a cigar chompin' leader of men. I was there from Oct 89 to June 91 and deployed ISO DS/DS.

I liked the ‘Gurp’ because it was a small post next to a great city. I found a Hungarian Guesthouse that I would frequent weekly when I was there. Watching the Germans win the FIFA World Cup in that town was something I will never forget.

Does anyone remember the wild Dining-out we had at the post NCO Club after the unit returned from Desert Storm? That was one wild night for the history books!

Anyhow, many years have past and I am now a retired 1SG living in San Antonio. If you were there and remember the name, give me a ping.

Brewer was a MP at Cooke Barracks in 1956 - 1959.  He and my mother adopted me in Goppening in 1957.  My birth parents are German and are deceased.  I did locate my 3 brothers, and last June 2009 I  meet them for the first time.  It was GREAT!!  They and their families took my wife and daughter and I for tours of the area for 4 days.  We did visit Cooke Barracks...what's left of it.  The Control tower still stand as the front gate buildings were still their.

I just found this Site,  I was at Cooke Barracks, Germany from December 1977 to June 1980  I was a Medic in Delta Med. Ambulance Platoon.  I was also friends with the PA Warrant Officer and the Catholic Priest from the Church but I can't remember anybody else or their names (sad).  I do remember LT. Whitford and Capt. Ouitz other than those name (from Delta Med).  My nickname was Weed and I spoke fluent German (still do).  so I did not spend a whole lot of time on the Post.

I was stationed at Cook Barracks from April 1971 to April 1972.  Because I had just arrived I was “volunteered" to stand during the change from the 4th Armored Division to the 1st.  I was naive enough to think it was a privilege at the time.  I remember when I arrived it was still cold and many folks kept food on the outside of the window sills.  Being from Los Angeles, I had never seen people store food like that.  I also remember that the busses were more modern in Germany than the smoke-belching ones I was familiar with in LA.

The 501st Admin Co. was housed in the large building at the edge of the post and living there reminded me of a college dorm complete with drinking games, card games, playing Frisbee in the halls (an early version of Ultimate Frisbee).  The food was mostly OK except on weekends when the famous “Green Weenies” appeared again and again on the menu.  My duty sergeant was a nice fellow named Willis A. Rizer, but everyone called him by his initials, WAR.  He always spoke of getting out and liked to party with us enlisted/draftees, so I was very disappointed when he announced that he signed up for another 6-year hitch.  He had a family and probably needed the money.

My friends included Mick (Ehrlinborn) from Chicago (his real name wasn’t that, but we called him Mick because people said he looked like Mick Jagger.  Other friends included Mike (?) Mulkey from South Dakota, Louis Hernandez from Dallas, Dave or Bob (?) Decker from Wisconsin who played some of the fastest games of checkers with me.  I guess after a few moves we got bored and both wanted to finish as soon as possible.

I worked at the personnel office for a while sending various kinds of orders out to the outposts of the division.  All the folks who worked there were great.  Even though I had some disagreements with the duty officer, we never took our differences elsewhere.  Sorry for that punch Lt. Mike Manning or was it Mike Manion (?).

After that incident I ended my tour of Cook Barracks and the Army working at the Service Club, which may have been one of the best jobs anyone could have.  No uniforms, show up at 11 am, organize pool tournaments and concert trips.  Halfway through my job there the 1st Armored Division moved out to Ansback or some place like that, but since I was a short timer (less than 90 days), they left me behind with the 1st Infantry Division.  Naturally, they had no idea what to do with me so I just went about my business without having to interact with any officers or NCO’s.  I was finally discharged in April 1972, 19 months and 7 days after my induction and returned to LA, when I enrolled in college and became a Geologist.

I was stationed at Cooke's Barracks with the 4th Armored Div., 504th Admin. Co. between September 1964 and July 1966.  I served as a 1st cook, Mess #1, under Master Sergeant Virgil Smith. I had the opportunity not only to see Bavaria but Austria, Switzerland and Great Britain as well. To this day the beauty of the landscapes I witnessed and the friendships I made with fellow soldiers and the natives are some of the best memories I'll ever remember.

A part time musician before I entered the service, soon after I arrived at Cooke's I met several members of the 4th Armored Div. Band and shortly thereafter joined a quintet, booked by  Sergeant Tom Dooley (Yes, that was his real name) assistant to the 4th AD Band Master Sergeant Armand Guarneiri (One of the finest people I have ever met in my entire life) played the circuit of EM and NCO clubs in the G?ppengen, Schw?bisch Gmünd area. A great time in my life!

I went to the annex school (elementary grades) behind the MP station.
My teacher was Miss Janice Egger. My best friend was Vicky McMullin.
Mr. Theodore Toews was a music teacher in the high school who wrote “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in common English and wrote music for it.
We performed it in town and got a good review.
(Well, who is going to disappoint children and teachers?!)
I played Puck.
An MP “Taylor” used to take pictures of us. I have a few to share.
Would like to know where he is these days.

Wow, this is Awesome. I have been looking for guy's that I was in Germany with. My wife just stumbled accross this site, many thanks
to the gentleman who put this together.
I was stationed at Cooke Barracks, with the 573rd S&S Co and then later 299th from 1981 to 1984. My wife Kim was there with me, we lived off post in Kuchen and later my son Jesse was born there, at 5th General Hospital in Sttugart.
I don't know where to start, I have so many great memories of planet Geoppingen. As far as the Army goes the people that I dealt with when I first got there 1sgt Smith, Capt. Falavolita were nothing but professional and exemplified what  the Army was all about and I want to thank you . My Room mate, before I moved off post, Mariano Lanza, you were my best friend, every time I think of you I laugh. My squad leader, Ezra Graham, you put up with my attitude and helped me get my stuff together. There are alot of other people that meant alot to my wife and I, on the big Holidays we made it a point to have some of the guy's over, that meant alot to us and I hope to hear form some of you.

A close personal friend, prior to the Army, who I also served with later at Cooke Barracks just told me about this website and I was stunned to know it existed after all these years. I was a medic (SP/4) in C Co. 1/26 - Blue Spaders - 1st IDF - Big Red 1 from early '79 to about July of '80. I flew Dustoff in the states at Fort Sill (4th flight platoon/507th Medical Group) - tried to get into a medevac unit in Germany but ended up as an infantry medic in the 1/26th - can't beat that with a stick.

So far, I've seen three people in these posts that I know and have contacted two of them. Although it has been 30+ years since being there, I still have some fond memories of my time there.

Some names I remember in the 1/26 - Dennis Cade, Jim Minor, Glen Ogle, George Thomson, John Herrod, Gary Simpson, John Emrich, Steve Seiferman, Bob Brassard, Jeff Fram, Craig Sheffield, Dave McConnell, Doug Cooke, Mark Cluster, Jim Zenor, Tom Boone, Dewayne Crowell, Jim Fullenkamp, Patrick Weaver, Dennis Yarosz.

Went to the NCO Academy in Bad Tolz and then TDY to the base hospital in Augsburg during my last three months at Cooke. Hated the alerts and tolerated the field only because the medics had the heated Tracks. Loved the beer, especially out of Das Boot.

I remember a german fraulin (sp?) named Petra - boy could that girl party. I also remember another german party girl named Pia. Another fond memory was Jack's Gasthaus in Eisligen. I remember being helped back to the barracks many a time after leaving that party palace.

Glen Ogle, George Thomson and myself took a little vacation to Amsterdam one time. That was a naughty, but fun place to visit. Went to a bar there called "The Other Place" - run by a bunch of retired Hell's Angels bikers from California -- will never forget that trip.

It was fun to to go back and remember some good times. If somebody out there remembers me, send an email, I'd love to hear from you.

As you were......Brian

Lived in temp housing at Leipheim, dad had to commute to Cooke Bks on a daily basis. Attended school at Ulm at the time and met my wife of 45 years there.

Spent a lot of time at AYA and played baseball, basket ball, and American football at the local Sportsplatz. Also spent a lot of time with Jurgen at the "Candy shop" partaking of steinhager, rauchputzen and boiler makers. Had some good times during faschen at the Sieben Schwabben and other establishments in downtown Goppingen.

I loved Germany and Goppingen was great. I went on lots of Volksmarches (still have the medals). We used to eat at Vessuvio's Italian Restaurant a lot. I do not remember what town it was in (not Goppingen).
I looked at a Google map of Goppingen and tried to remember where Cooke Barracks was. It has been too long and I could not remember. Can anyone give me directions from downtown Goppingen to Cooke Barracks so I can find it on a map???

I was a teen-ager and my step-dad (SFC Clyde Fort)was stationed in Goeppingen from 1953-1956 (9th Div. Artillery). I attended the American high schools in (Heidelberg and then Stuttgart) at that time. I will never forget all the good times there! We lived in the housing quarters at the top of the hill. The memories of all the good times at the chapel, theatre, Snack Bar, PX, NCO Club will be forever be with me. My first Christmas there (1954) it snowed...was so beautiful! So many wonderful memories there and good friends too! So sorry to hear Cooke Barracks is no longer there but the memories will always be there for me!

Hi, Just checking out Goeppingen because someone says it is such a pretty place 2 visit, and they have great tucker (Strain or Oztraylian for food). This is just a friendly greeting from an Aussie, (not really), who was born in Germany and left to "The Great Southland of the Holy Spirit" in 1973, a step I never regretted. I was told that this is the best time of the year there, like here at the moment, we are heading towards winter and you towards summer. To whoever reads this, I'd like to wish a beautiful life and 'May God hold you in the palm of his hand". Keep smiling even if you are up to your neck in crocodiles, something that happens to most of us occasionally. If not, you are very fortunate indeed. Best regards from a fellow human being, Wolfgang

Most vivid memory: Being told by Sgt. Petty to "go shave your peach fuzz" one morning at roll call. I had never shaved before.

Enjoyed good German food and still do, but difficult to find here in NH. Especially the brats with roll and a beer for 1 Mark

Also enjoyed travel with my good friend and fellow soldier Heinrich Thumm.

This is "TOTALLY" blowing my mind. Whoever took these pic's and posted them has just sent me into outerspace and thinking about my time at Cooke Barracks. I was assigned to Headquarters & Headquarters Company, 1st Infantry Division "Forward", 3rd Brigade attached from
Ft. Riley Kansas. My home Station was the 24th Infantry Division, Ft. Stewart, Georgia. I was at Cooke from March 1980 until August 1983. I was a clerk in the HQ building which must be gone because I don't see any pictures of it posted. It was adjacent to the building that is being described at the Post Gym which was the Army hanger for the choppers that were on base at my time. The building next to that is where my buddies in the Air Force were detached to. There were only about 20 Air Force guys there at the time and they were assigned to the first billets to the left as you came in through the main gate. I am at work as I write the message but will be home tonight
trying to make contact with people I knew while stationed there. I have tried over the years to Google Cooke Barracks and see what happened since I left and now i've found it. Thanks to whoever posted these and lets stay in touch. I'm sure I have pictures at home that I can scan from my time over there. I miss Goep and want to go and visit really bad. Thanks

I was there in 58-59 with 126th Ord Bn Detachment, it was a very small outfit of 20 or 25 guys. We "dined" in the 404th MP Co messhall. I still have the Thanksgiving and Christmas menus from 1959. Its great to look back at all the good times and reminice a bit.I did not realize it at the time but we had it made, no inspections,no formations, no KP,just get up and go to work. This my second entry, though I have gone on the site regularly. Hard to believe it was 40 years ago on March 9th that I got drafted and a little over 39 years since I was diverted from going to Vietnam and sent to West Germany to serve in the 504th later 501st Admin Co.

I have fond memories of going to Amsterdam, Stuttgart, Nuremberg, and Munich in my black VW bug and going all over Switzerland 4th of July weekend 1971 in my buddy Tom Darr's 1970 BMW 2002. The nice thing about Cooke Barracks in Germany was that you could drive almost anywhere in western Europe in one day.

I left the 501st Adm PM section early 1971 on an early out separation to go to grad school at Slippery Rock State College, Slippery Rock, Pa.

Don't know if my other message got through, but here
it is. I was assigned to the 48th Transportation Unit
Dec. 31, 1968, what a News Years Eve welcome I got.
I was there until April of 1971. My MOS 35M20 and my
secondary MOS 35N20. I had a great time and lots of
great memories. I stayed away from the hash and grass,
the German beer was a lot better. My rank SP-E5,which
allowed me to buy a vehicle, 1960 Volkswagen,Grey color. I gave it to a friend when I recieved orders
to report to RVN training. My orders were canceled
and I didn't have to go after all, but he still got
the car. If anyone gets this message I'd like to hear
more. All my pictures and notes were lost when I devorced 30 years ago.

I was at Cooke Bk's.from 1982 Thur 1985. I was in Charlie Company 2nd Plt. 1/24 Inf. later 4/16 Inf. My best friend was in CSC his name was Jeff Adkins. We spent a lot of time on the week ends on the train. Most of the time we would go to Stuttgart and go to the clubs on Konig Strasse. I was amazed to see all the artist doing their art in chalk on the streets there. We always got there earlier enough to see different parts of the city before we got down to drinking. After all that's my they sent us to Germany. My favorite beer was Stuttgarter Hofbrau.
I did spend a lot of my off time in Gerp. Mostly at the MIAKFER they played some really good music and the locals were real friendly. In the summer we spent the weekends at the swim bad.I do have a lot of pictures I will post when I get the time to scan them in. I remember when they put the slot machines in the Enlisted and NCO clubs.
I had my E-5 promotion party at the Rod and Gun Club. It was up behind the snack bar then. I think that later moved it. Here are a few of the names of friends I had at Cooke Barracks. Mike Troute, David Carlson, SSG. Boswell, SFC. Oberlander, Fitzgerald (Spiderman), Sgt. Kent Stalker, SSG. Calix, SFC.Don Lyles. These are only a few of the friends I had after 20 years I know I have forgotten a lot of names, but I can still see their faces.
To finish up I went to Germany with a duffel bag and left with some good memories and a great wife. She is from a village not far from Cooke Barracks call Adelberg. We have been married for 22 years and have three children.
I hope to hear from from some old friends.

I was stationed at Cooke from around October 1977 to June of 1980 in the Big Red One. I remember CSM Ligon very well. I saw his name on one of the post around that time frame. I can't remember all the names I would like to. Our Platoon Sgt was SFC Richard Flett. I was a Sgt E-5 and squad leader when I left. I worked at the headquarters as a driver and in Division communications. We used to party like there was no tomorrow. A few names I remember, Polly Greenleeves, Sgt David Arnold, Joe Ashbey, SPC Green, Tic Bo, Peggy Tambornino, Ray and his wife I toured Amsterdam with and SGT Mac. We had a party club we called Mac's all night diner I think it was and had all of our members names etched onto a mirror he kept in his room. I just can't remember everyone as my memory fails me a lot these days. I would love to hear from anyone that remembers me.
