Question for you younger guys. I've seen quite a few comments about Ma Weigle and her place. I believe that she passed away in 2009. I was in Gopp Town in the 504 Admin in 1959-1960. Most of our guys spent a lot of our time at a place called the Greenerbaum which was located off the main drag on a corner. It was a yellow building with a enclosed entranceway. It had a bar and two rooms perp to each other (I believe). It was owned by a man and his wife and I believe their name was Stienbinder. They had a daughter about 18-20 years old that worked there from time to time. She was a tall blond girl and hitting on her was not allowed. Could this be the same place and could the daughter be the lady called Ma? There are pics of the building and the lady called Ma on the Cooke site. If she is she would be about the correct age it appears. Any thoughts and comments?

I was assigned to the 48th Trans (the bastard child unit on the post at that time) from 08.66 to 12.67. I enjoyed many experiences during that eighteen months both on and off post. Perhaps the highlight experience was as a member of the 48th Trans flag football team during the '67 season. The '66 team had been pretty dismal and nobody was interested in coaching in '67 until my bud, John Zydalis (a semipro football player from Baltimore) volunteered. He was wearing a leg cast at the time and couldn't play. The team was a rag-tag group, including some who had played in high school and others, like me, who had never played, that wasn't expected to win a single game. Against all odds, that bastard child group improbably wound up winning the 4th AD championship trophy (SWEET!). For some reason that I don't remember, the division championshp game occurred before the final on-post game between the 48th Trans and the 404th MPs. The MPs got partial revenge by winning that game and the Cooke Barracks championship trophy. As the crowning touch our CO, a real sports nut, rewarded the team members with a one grade promotion which enabled me to retire from a less-than-illustrious two-year military career as a Spec 4 in Dec. '67. Thanks Cooke Barracks and Goerppingen for being there for me.

Hi,

Still looking for these old friends and havent been able to find abyone. Someone responded to me about Damian Quattlebaum about 6 months or so ago and said he knew his dad. If you see this can you message me again please? I thought I found Damina on facebook and twitter, and the guy was a dead ringer for Damian, but said he wasnt the same one?? SOOOO hard to find brats on this site. It is great, but it would be much better if there was a section for brats and if the replies were broken down in decades maybe instead of all lumped together and if you could search for a name rather than scrolling thru years of archive responses. Just a thought!

Thanks!

I served in the Air Force and was stationed at Cooke Barracks from August of 1980 to January of 1985. I was an enlisted forward air controller, and drove one of the funny looking jeeps with the "Chinaman's Hat" on the back. Our unit was assigned to one of the hangers on the flight line.
My favorite hangouts were the "Rod and Gun Club", the Golf Course and the Bowling Alley. I frequented the NCO Club, The Life Club and The Mykafer. My favorite food was the Schnitzel Sandwich made at Maggie's. There was a restaurant on Hohenstaufen I loved, but can't remember the name of. My favorite people were Rudie the politzi that hung out at the Rod and Gun Club. And Connie who worked in the housing office. And I can't forget Maggie!

I lived with a chic in/on Hohenstaufen. Every so often we had base alerts at about 5-6:00 in the AM.

I arrived to the 48th Transportation Company in Oct 0f 1969. I was supposed to work in the motor pool but somehow wound up in supply.
I have fond memories of the place because it was my first time away from home. The first night I arrived I was assigned a bunk in the basement with all the black guys and they turned me on to my first pipe of hash. They actually treated me pretty good and I'll never forget Taylor McCalister from TN a skinny guy who I would carry back from NCO club when he would pass out by the road on the way back to the barricks.
The first New Years I had guard duty at the ammo dump and was scared to death that people were shooting fire works towards the dump. I think we only had flares and such but still. The New Years of 1971 I got to celebrate and shoot rockets towards the dump. We went a little crazy with all the fireworks that year and practically destroyed the barracks.
I did my first hit of acid out back and spent 10 hours watching ants walk around.
Had my 1st pay for play at the house of 3 colors. Like everyone loved the food and the german people were really nice. I got to have Christmas with a family one year and learned a lot.
In Oct of '70 I was in a bad car wreck in Oberamagow and spent several months in the hospital up at madigan general.
What a time.

I must admit to a vested interest for creating CookeBarracks.com over seven years ago. That was, to find someone who knew me and who might be able to help me piece together the fragmented pieces of memory I have of Cooke Barracks; the result of an auto accident while stationed at Cooke that hospitalized me for the best part of a year at Valley Forge Army Hospital. According to the doctors, head trauma was the worst injury and explains the amnesia I still experience today.

Because of amnesia, I remembered only one face from that time...and a face with no name. Complicating things was the loss of all my personal possessions enroute to Valley Forge (photos and such).

Not only did CookeBarracks.com eventually connect a name to the face a couple years ago, but tonight I have been blessed by the submission of a photo from Gary Holland that exactly matched the face I remembered from nearly 39 years ago.

Finally, I know the face that haunted my memory was not a figment of brain damage and was exactly as I remembered. I can not possibly explain the thrill and satisfaction I experienced tonight from viewing that one photo. Nor, can I thank Gary Holland enough for the photo (see the last photo in the "Gary Holland" album.

Thank you, Gary, my 385th MP Bn patrol partner, 1970!

I was assigned to the 573rd S & S Co. from March 1979 through August 1980. I was in the motor pool as a mechanic. We had some great times and I still keep in touch with Rita from CIF and Dave Borges from 1st Signal, Bruce Leander from the 573rd and Andy Hagler and Joni Wruck. I was on CQ one night in July just before we were heading out to Hoenfels when one of the mechanic, Doug Moffatt, from the 573rd got apprehended because as he went by CSM Ligon's house he was singing at the top of his lungs "If you're a Lifer and you love it suck my ....." CSM Ligon didn't think it very appropriate and so the next morning 1SG Caron and SFC Fray where down in the orderly room with Moffatt, in a uniform that looked like he just pulled it out of the bottom of his duffel bag, all standing at attention as Ligon cussed and screamed and spit all over everyone. 30 years later I still laugh about.
I went on and got my commission and was the S-4 for 104th Division when I got hit by a car as a pedestrian going over 60 mph. My military career was over after nearly 18 years.
Life has been good and Gerp was a good part of it. I GoogleEarth Cooke Barracks every once in a while. I see that the 573rd barracks and the MP barracks are no longer there. Proud to have served and glad it was in Germany.

I was stationed at Cooke Barracks in the AG section-504th Admin Co. from Oct 1961 to 1965. I was a lieutenant and later captain. I worked in the APO, PSD. and in the AG's office. At the Apo the general's wife came in every day to get their mail. If there was not any she complained to the general that the mail was not working well. After we heard about it SFC Comiskey always made sure there was there was mail for her. Lt DeNio and I used used to take the APO to Grafenworh which was a real trip especially in the winter. At least we could go to Smileys. I remember when the PSD was formed. The Division brought in all of the Division unit's records with the responsible admin nco's. How to operate was initially confusing, but we had great nco's and personnel specialists, and it became successful. Data processing was introduced, and it was a big deal back then (punch cards) In those days my new wife (50 years in 2011!) and I lived off base in Eislingen. We traveled all over Europe on leave because things were inexpensive. I do remember the helicopter crash and the day after President Kennedy was assasinated. Gen Franklin had everyone at a formation and announced it. This is a great site and I was surprised to see so many comments from the early 60s.

I was stationed at Cooke Barracks as an MP with the 1st Inf Div from 1972 until September of 1975. It was a time filled with great friendships, good memories (and a few that were not so good). Overall, it was a little over 2 years in which the foundation of my life was built with the help of so many good (and not so good) people. Fond memories mostly, and no regrets. When I left Germany, I returned to finish college, graduated and became a police officer for the State of New York. A posistion that I have been in for a little over 30 years. As an Environmental Conservation Officer I still wear a green uniform, so I have a constant reminder of the time I wore green so very long ago and far away. Last spring fellow MPs (Dean Knight, Jim Hall, Drum Murray and I got together for a few days at my house and had a chance to telephone some of the other guys. What a pleasure to see them and reflect on those past days and look over perhaps a thousand photos I had taken during the course of 3 and 1/2 years. Just daily life at Sheridan Kaserne, Panzer Kaserne, Graf, Hohenfels, Wildflicken and especially Cooke Barracks. A thank you to all the soldiers who served at Cooke Barracks and walked, drove and staggered through that gate while I was there.

Hey All,

Geoppingen was the place. I was there with the Mighty Alpha Raiders (82-84 and then with HHC 1st IDF 85 88)
Life was good!!!! The LIFE Disco and the Raid (when we ran everyone off the floor and did our shuffle. (I think Gregg Austin invented that). There was our championship Basketball Team (Blakey, Buskey, Austin, Cook and Chapman, Coached by the greatest 1SG every (1SG Twyman) Our almost championship football team, Blakey, Austin, Larkin, just to name a few. Our best Boxer (Ronnie Price) Our greatest martial artist (Gregg Kennerbrew) many knockouts at the Life.
Don't forget our championship softball team and our numerous guidion relays win. Don't ask me about soldering becasue I wasn't much into that.
With HHC IDF we continued the tradition of championships with Basketball Blakey,Grayer, Miller, Chief and Lt from Signal, (football) and softball in the same year.
Life is good, would be great to hear from you all...

My husband and I were in Goeppingen with the 1st IDF from 12/83 to 11/87. Bill was a young warrant officer in the Aviation Detachment and I worked in the G2 and later in the community, and occasionally went out to support the sub-community offices in Schwaebisch Gmuend.

We had a great time in Germany, being young and unencumbered. We traveled all over--saw Italy, Switzerland, Austria, the Benelux, France, England. I learned to ski at Garmisch and subsequently skied all over the place.

We lived in Hattenhoffen. How I remember the mid-night calls for Lariat Advances, not very fondly. Bill deployed with the Basso-matic one Thanksgiving, on a multinational field exercise that devolved into just the 4/16th sitting there in tents. There were exercises in Hohenfels, and Graffenwehr, not to mention a couple of REFORGERs.

I remember the mark was very low when we first got there, but the G-7 got together and devalued the dollar after a while. There was the time after the US bombed Tripoli (in reprisal for a bombing at a Berlin club) and we were all on curfew. Oddly, for all the kerfluffle about Bader Meinhof and the RAF, I never felt very threatened. We had great neighbors and there were the occasional strassenfests, our German always improving with alcohol. We went to every bierfest and German-American Friendship fest.

We went back briefly in 1995 or thereabouts and got a glimpse of the post-Army Flugplatz. It was overgrown and run down, except for the area where the 4/16 had been, which appeared to be a camp of some sort. Later, we were told it was a German polizei barracks. Not sure. The Town was depressed, it seemed to us, in the wake of reunification and the loss of the US Army. None of our favorite restaurants were still there. It was a sad visit and we left quickly. I do hope the economy picked up again. Maybe someday we'll get back to see how things are going.

Love reading many of your memories. It sure takes me back.

I drove a yellow Taunus and my best friend in the 48th was Robert Gibbs, who drove a huge Nash Rambler Station Wagon. He also ran the Prop and Rotor shop. Bob was also the one who ran the over head crains. We remained friends all these years until he passed Jan 2009.We got together every couple years and I just spoke with his german wife tonight. I was stationed at Cooke 66 - 67 in Co C, 144th Sig. MOS was motion picture photographer out of Ft Monmouth, but in the nearly 3 years spent in Germany never shot an inch of mopic film! But I was a still photographer, lab teck. Shot a lot of "handshake jobs" and official portraits...General Scherrer, Col Racke, etc.
Co C CO was Capt White, First Sgt Grissom his aide (he got busted a grade for throwing some privates stuff from his locker), Joe Warda was co clerk. Fellow photogs were Joseph Wright (Georgia) and Joe Washington (Philadelphia). We spent a bunch of off hours at a gasthaus I remember only as "Mom's".
We had a mobile photo lab mounted on a duece and a half....took it to Graf at least three times. Once during a convoy up to Graf I was driving a 3/4 ton pulling our generator. Got left behind due to engine problems. After being fixed on the road drove a little too fast trying to catch up and flipped the generator trailer under one of those tight "S" bends going under a railroad. That incident didn't get me an Article 15....but a later one did. Got caught by the sergeant of the guard sitting on a sideboard, smoking a pipe and reading a book when I SHOULD have been walking around the motor pool guarding it!
Other good memories....coming in 16th in an all USArmy Germany table tennis tourney.
Also a guy from New York with a cabaret liscense
(entertainer) got me and another guy (can't remember his name...a latin fella) to start an acappelo trio. We practiced for the all Europe entertainment competion but didn't win anything as there were hordes of other groups that not only could sing, but dance and flash some pretty nifty costumes. Our leader's name? Joe Fatone, the father of the recently famous Joey Fatone of N'Sync.
For the last part of my tour was transfered to Furth/montieth barracks and worked for the PIO as photographer/ lab teck/ reporter for the division newspaper Rolling Review. Our radio man there was Vic Bremer. Editor, I believe, was _____ Wallace.
One vivid memory there was the Nixon/Humphrey election. Copy deadline was the night of the election We knew the result would be tight so made up 'winner' front page headlines and pics for each. When the results were known late that night the lieutenant and I raced down the autobahn to the printer with the correct copy. Made it OK and in time but his driving rendered that night unforgettable!
Was nice to run across this website. Read the archives and did not see any EM's that this now older mind recognizes, but if any of you remember a skinny 6' 6" kid with a camera it would be great to hear from you.

Just a note to let all of you 404th guys know what a great time was had this past weekend in Leitchfield, Kentucky. There were 40 or so attendees along with most of the spouses. The camaraderie was fantastic even though the period of time we served was over a 10 or 12 year span. Seems as there was enough personnel overlap that each contributed to the friendly atmosphere with their fond and funny memories. The weekend was filled with great food, German Beer, (even the ceramic flip tops) and fond memories. If you missed this one, don't miss the next one in upstate New York. We're hoping the attendance grows.

And, by the way, I tip my hat to Dave Wisniewski for starting this web site. Had it not been for him, I wouldn't have known about the reunion and had the opportunity to renew friendships. My contribution to help defer the cost is on the way. Those that care to maintain contacts should all participate. Thanks, Dave

Was at Cookes from late 1958 until mid 1960 with Co A of 4th QM Battalion of 4th AD. Company A was commanded by Captain Robbins. I served under his command as a Platoon Leader (Lt Williams) until he was transferred to Trains. I remember a lot of faces from that era but not a lot of names. I do remember some last names of truck drivers like Buck, Marciano, Guerreo, etc. I also remember there was a Lt. Woods, Lt. Scott, Sgt Thayer, Sgt Pickett, Sgt Day and the W/O in charge of the motor pool whose name I forget
I remember all these with fond memories of Germany. All of you were a great bunch of guys. I also remember a guy named Nickolas Colbert. I remember a Spec Milner who drove for Capt Robbins, but can't remember my own driver's name, tho I do believe he had an Irish name... Spc4 Kelly, I think.
I started teaching high school mathematics when I left the military. I retired from that in 1994. Still clicking along fairly well for 72 years of age. My wife is deceased now and I have one son who is 34 and one grand daughter who is 14. Id would love to hear from any of you guys that remember me from that time and let me know what and how you are doing.

Was at Cooke Barracks from 1965-1967 with the 404th MP Company. Met a lot of great guys there, and have a lot of fond memories. Where has the time gone. From being young and stupid to being old(er) and wiser(?) If I could do it all over again I wouldn't change a thing, other than learning a more respectable Deutsch vocabulary.

(revised updated Info)

1952 -1960 LOST GRANDFATHER,

Hi everyone....
This post is aimed towards anyone that might have been stationed in Germany "COOK BARRACKS" during the time of 1952-1960 I have very limited information about my possible grandfather and even that information is based on rumors and family hear say and secrets. I've been looking, researching this information for decades now and I am afraid I still hit a dead end every time I find the will to look again. Now I found thing page and I am afraid it will be my last hope in terms of finding any picture, a name, a memory or at least an assurance of any information being somewhat valid.

My grandfather must have been of mixed maybe Hispanic, Native American or Italian descent. Which again is only a guess coming from the way my mother looks. Hear say claims that his name was MR. WALKER (he was called only by Walker, never his fist name which was said to be John, or Johnny (yes like the Whiskey) so I don't know how much of it is actually accurate or just plain made up, which at this point i am leaning more towards)
I do not have rank or division in which he was placed nor for the exact time period.
He must have encountered a local German woman named CAROLA SCHMIEDHAEUSSLER (very attractive and well known) during the given time period. I believe she worked as a waitress on post as well as in the local bars/restaurants like " 7 schwaben & die Hennen", as well as at the PANZER CASERNE)
I do not know if they were officially dating, or just casually well you know what. Anyways, during their time spent together my grandmother got pregnant with my mother which must have been during the time of February/March 1959. Family rumors claim, MR.Walker left Germany before my mother was born in November 1959, and it is not clear if he knew about my mothers existence or not at all.

Regardless of what circumstances back then, I do not wish to bring back long forgotten memories, still it is very close to my heart to finally for fill my mothers silent dream to know - where she comes from. It seems heartbreaking not knowing that other side of you, which has wounded my mother deeply during her childhood in Germany and left many scars even through elderly adulthood. I long have giving up on actually finding him, so today I would be happy about a memory of him, a validation of his existence, a photo or anything else that could bring me closer to my heritage and my mothers dream of finding answers to questions never able to ask. And If you believe remembering my grandmother but in association with another gentleman then please do not hesitate in letting me know.
I am more than thankful for any hint, memory or advice anyone is willing to offer.

Sincerely, Michaela

PS: If anyone is interested to know, Cook Barracks today have been completely remodeled. It is ruled a new development Center for Businesses. My Uncle bought one of the hangar's and turned it into his company. It is beautiful up there now, but I am afraid most buildings have been demolished and replaced. The old big red hangar is ruled a historical Building and is owned by the state and can not be destroyed, even though it is not maintained either and sadly is falling apart :(

Greetings all who served at Cooke Barracks. I am happy to see all the posts here of those of us that served here. As I see some people have fond memeories and others not so fond memories. However, I am sadden by the lack of people who served with me in the Signal Detachment/Signal Platoon/1st Signal Support. As you see there were several names given to the unit while I was there. I was stationed there from 10/77 to 9/83. I still remember the building number; 134. There are a lot of pictures of this particular building. Where are all the old Signal soldiers from my time frame. This is Bolton, hey give me a holler, lets talk about the good/bad times.

Browsing the internet I kind of stumbled into this site. I was actually a dependent at Cooke Barracks between 1979 and 1981. My step father was stationed there. His last name was Galarza, so alot of people kids knew me as James Galarza. Anyway, I went to the elementary and for some reason I want to say I lived in building 301 but I could be mistaken. Recently I did reconnect with an old childhood friend of mine via Myspace. Anyway, I'm going to browse through the site and look at some pictures. I thought I would sign is as I'm curious if I remember any of this stuff.

Am curious to know how many of you Cooke Barracks MP's took your MP training at Oberammergau? I took Combat Engineer training in Ft. Leonard Wood and was ordered to Zweibruecken for assignment. The NCO there said, that my IQ was real good, and he said "how would you like to go to the MP's?" I replied that wasn't my training and wasn't all that crazy about serving with the MP's.
Nevertheless, he cut orders to go to the 28th Division MP's. After about a month (Oct. 1953), I was ordered to take MP training at Oberammergau. BEAUTIFUL area! Wish I could have stayed there.

My father, Maj. Harold Bergdale, served at Cooke Barracks in 1954-55. I attended the junior high that was close to the family quarters. I spent much of my time exploring in the beautiful woods around the base, and frequenting the movie theater, snack bar, etc. The road from the family quarters to the base went into a little valley with steep inclines at both ends. One of my favorite memories is walking with my family from our apartment to the base chapel for Christmas Eve services. It was snowing, but it was very still, not particularly cold, and huge snowflakes floated down on us in slow motion as we walked home. A perfect Christmas Eve. At that time there was no high school, so grades 9-12 were bussed to a boarding school in Heidelburg. One of my biggest regrets is that we returned to the States just before I could go! My dad had previously been stationed in Stuttgart, Robinson Barracks, for several years. We went home on the S.S. America, a luxurious ocean liner, then in its heyday. Sorry to hear that the base is now a ghost town. These were some of the happiest years of my childhood.

My father was stationed at Cooke Barracks from around 1960 through 1962. I lived in the apartment building nearest the base (I could see the gate from my back window). Being a kid, I remember the stream behind the building, the swing set, building huge snowmen back there, playing tether ball. I seem to remember two schools, one on the base and one in the community...I think I went to both. I remember the officer's club; going there with my parents. Sadly, I also remember my friend Donny Delosier (sic?) who's father, a helicopter pilot, died when his chopper crashed while helping the townspeople erect a cross at the top of their church. I rode my bicycle that day to the church with my teacher to see what had happened. I remember "sour sticks" at the little German candy store near our housing. It was a wonderful time in my life, a great experience for a kid. I had many friends, John Harper, Bob Evans, Lamonia Freeman, Donny Delosier, and so many more. I had a great experience about 7 years ago. I went back. I found the base...a ghost town. The German guard let me ride through. There was the movie theater where I broke my nose running back to get my jacket. The gym, the school, the airbase, the offices, so many memories came flooding back. The housing area (I found my apartment) was being used as, from what I could determine, an East German refugee camp. I found the church in town with the cross still bent from the helicopter crash. There was a plaque commemorating the loss. It was a wonderful day, remembering a wonderful time in my life.

I come back to the site, and really appreciate it every year or two to look around. I like the changes.

I was in Eco 4/16 inf from January 86 until March or April 88. I was reassigned to Gerp from Ft. Polk and had a hell of a good time there. It is more than 21 years now since I left Gerp and the Army and boy do I miss it and what it now represents to me.

Youth, minimal cares a bunch of guys to screw around with. Enough field time to really get a kick out of playing soldier. A beautiful duty station and fantastic scenery.

Anyone besides me remember the combat soccer in the filed by the church or up on the airfield? Baumiller, if your out there do you remember that game of CS we were playing against Charlie company, I think it was when that Samoan knocked me flat. You told me you thought he killed me.

What about the boxing matches we had until the CG shut us down. Those were a trip.

Lets see, I remember

Hobgood who did the same,
Trombley - he never liked me but not a bad guy
Oulett
Riehl
Ball
Clyde B Felts III gotta get the third part right
Lt Smith - great guy
Shawn Powell
George Betters
Madrano
SSG Martin
SSG Blackman
SGT Maciel
CPL Smith
SGT Reber, Rovito was sweet on his daughter as I recall
Gerry Allen - Remember 2PPCLI and kicking me down the stairs that night when I was drunk!
CPT Fortune, a pretty good guy as I recall, wonder how far he went
Was it Lt Allen the XO for a while
SSG Lee a great guy who went to DS School in about 87
CPL Claybourn
Hogbody - John Muller
Fatback - Joe Abney remember the night we partied with the wino's
McMannis - Remember his late night guitar playing?
Timmy Simpson - Still married I think. We were at the Krock drinking the night you met your wife
Losa Kellek
Red Wernert
Birdsill
Torrence
Bobby Graham
CPl Carrion
John Baumiller

probably a lot more, but it is getting late and I have to, probably like most of you, work in the morning.

Hi everyone...some good memories when I look at some of the photos here. I have some to scan and post on here when I get to it. I was stationed in Cco 299th Support BN ("Charlie Med") March 1986 to June 1989 and would enjoy hearing from others who knew me. It was a tough place at times, but some good memories of great friends I made there.

Just checking out the site again, it was 30 years ago today I was discharged while I was in Goeppingen. I had a European discharge and a 2 month Eurail Pass so I was just going to bum around Europe for a while before getting on with my life. But the army being the army they messed up my pay so I got to live on the post for a week while they tried to straighten it out. That was great, I was a civilian surrounded by the military. The CO didn't like me hanging around because of course I took as much advantage of the situation as I could.

Planning on going back and checking the place out later on this year, either December or January.

I was station at Cooke from Aug 66-May 68 with the 48th Trans. I lived next to the 404 MP’s boy could they party. Since the 144th Sig was always in the field the 48th and the 504 ADM had the post to ourselves.

Found Memories: Move out Alerts on payday nights, trying to slip past the front gate MPS after bedcheck with no pass and drunk. Ma Weigles great food, the Black Mercedes 4dr car probably a 1953 model that was sold and resold 10 times as troops went home, the Ratskeller EM club had an Italian bartender named Alfredo who if you were broke would give you a drink, going to Robinson Barracks to the Big PX, the great Mercedes TAXI’s “Flugplatz Bitte” they had better radios than we did, A great BAND OF BROTHERS.

Would like to connect with others from the 48t Trans.

I served with the 93rd Float Bridge company from April 1967 to September 1968.
It would be great to hear from any of my compatriots who may remember me from those years.

At the time of my service, I was single and lived in a suburb of Philadelphia, Pa. After the Army, I began working the the old Penn Central Railroad in Philly and stayed until I retired in 2000.

I returned to Germany in 1971 with my wife Linda for our honeymoon and again a few years later with Linda and my sister and her husband. Both times, we visited Nellingen and were permitted to drive through the Kaserne.

I now live in Berlin, Md. which is just outside Ocean City, Md. a terrific beach resort. I now enjoy traveling throughout the USA visiting our beautiful National Parks. When I'm not on the road I love to play golf, practice woodworking and enjoy our boat.

I haven't heard from anyone I served with for many years, and this may be an opportunity to touch base with anyone who helped me on our mission to clean up after WW II.

Billy, thanks for this chance to think about that time in my life.

I was at Cooke Barracks with the 385th MP Battalion and had some great times..I was the only female police-officer and it was tough. I remember a few people--Sgt. Rice, SSG Miller, SFC Noakes and SFC Moist who was in charge of the MP Station. My girlfriend, Linda Porter worked at the station in human resources..she was awesome. Then there was Sgt Pete Brinkerhoff, David Deitz and Mark Flury. We had some great times..
Since that time, I have married a wonderful man and we just celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary. We have three beautiful children...our son, Benjamin is in Iraq currently. We all sing together and have served as foreign missionaries in the former Soviet Union for about 15 years..what an experience!!
I want to wish all of you who knew me the best of life--knowing God and His blessings!!

I was a radioteletype operator at Cooke Barracks, with the 1st IDF HHC Signal Detachment in 1975-77. Enjoyed my time in "Gurp" and drank my share of great German beer. Especially enjoyed the Staufer Brau Xmas beer, with the Santa label.Plus,it was great to go up to the Golden Oschen on Hohenstaufen. They had great food,to go with the beer.
On field exercises,it was fun to see the German countryside and meet the locals. I remember my first Reforger, with Sgt Simon and Sfc Parkes. I was there just a few weeks, before we hit the field. It was exciting to convoy through the picturesque little German villages in the middle of the night. Oh to be 19 again!
Would like to hear from some of the old Signal troops.I have kept contact with Mike Crothers, since I left. Also, I located Dave Eury, about 8 years ago and talked to Jay Hird for the first time earlier this year. "High Steppin" Pepin , Bill Roy and the rest of the "Gurp" team, from that time, are you out there? Give me a shout. Look forward to hearing from you.

Greetings to all that spent time at "Planet Gerp" I was in HHC 4-16 INF from December 1984 thru August 1986, very memorable experience for a young Soldier still trying to find his way in the Army, as well as in life. I loved spending weekends in Stuttgart and sight seeing around Germany. I certainly remember the winter snows, and now I wish I could do it all over again. Being in Germany in the 80s was allot of fun.

Hey you people from the 504th admin from 66 to 68, I
just read one from Dennis Kirsch. Dennis will never forget the haircut I gave him, I cut his ear and he bled for a month. That is but one of a multitude of
Cooke Barracks stories. We were Personnel and we were
challenged by finance (I think) to a football game.
We played on the field between the barracks and the mess. They let me quarterback the first half, Gerald Dampsker took the second half. Larry Nitz was a running back Rick Howell was an end, I think Kirsch was the other end. And a bunch of other guys, you know their names. Then there was Bobbie Black and Dickie Greene from Chicago, they were Good. No one will ever forget Bill Smith from Roswell, NM who set the USAMRY record for making-the-man, a record 43 times. We keep in touch, he's still carrying a clipboard. Got so many more. Give me a E

I have fond memories travelling over the Hohenstaufen and the Honeydew special at the restaurant known by that name. Before coming to Cooke I was stationed in Wuerzburg (82-87) and HQ V Corps in Frankfurt (80-82). I have many pictures from that time and quite a few pictures of various library programs. Maybe I have a picture of your child if he or she ever attended a storytime or a special library event. I'd love to reconnet with former staff members and fellow civilians who served our soldiers at that time. Treasure your memories and enjoy the new ones you have that you have the choice to create.

Not the Grafs or the field problems, but hangin' with the fellas in Goep, Stuttgart, Geislingen. My dad was stationed at Gurp from 77-80. His name is Ray (Eulis)Jernigan. I really enjoyed our time there. I started out just looking for some pictures to show my 5 year old daughter where dad use to live. I still remember the sheep coming through the off base housing. We use to have apple fights with the apples that grew there on the side of the road by the "horse stables" I think. I know there was a soccer field across from housing and there was a small store on the corner across from our housing. We use to sneak over there and by "Pop Rocks" and that atomic fizz or something like that. You would put it in your mouth and if start foaming. I also remember going to a German Restaurant that was just off base. We would always have cheese pizza. If I am not mistaking it was run by the owners and their daughters. Anyway I am glad I found this site, it brings back some great childhood memories!

Greetings Goppingen AYA Rebels!

I was a teenage Army brat; lived in Goppingen from 1957-1960. My father was assigned to the MP Company there, worked as the Desk NCO at the main gate building to Cooke Barracks. My time in Gerp were my "Happy Days." The most fond memories of any place I've ever lived are from Gerp and are deeply etched in the recesses of my mind and soul. My most significant formative years were in Gerp, as an athlete playing for the AYA Rebels baseball team - the best Connie Mack team in Germany at the time; as a Boy/Explorer Scout Troop with the German Scouts; saw most of lovely Germany being a ballplayer and scout; had my first girlfriend Patty Hayslip - the first girl I ever kissed; and was frightened to death of her famous brother Wayne who stood 6'4"and was the best, most feared pitcher in Germany, was wickedly skilled in ping pong and the dominant basketball player there - All USAREUR in basketball for the Stuttgart High Stallions; Wayne was an AYA Goppingen Rebel who lead our AYA Teen Club to many championships; and he also hovered over his little sister Patty so very protectedly, scaring the B-Jesus out of me most of the time - but I aways managed the challenges, with fear of dying young but very cleverly and stealthy - thought I should convey that, Wayne... And there were the four Shelly brothers, who lived in my building; the three Copeland brothers - great athletes and scholars; the four Webster brothers (the brawling Webster twins) - and their lovely sister Patricia whom everyone wanted to marry. We were the tightest bunch of Rebels in all of Germany whose pops were mostly Army cops - we raised hell but mildly, we knew our limits, no one would get away with doing bad 'cause you'd get caught. I also pitched my first no-hitter ever against Schwabisch Gmund in June 60 and it actually snowed that day - but what a great memory - must confess the SG team was awfully weak; I ate my first snitzle at Hoensfeld; and surreptitiously had my first swig of great German beer and wine, which is why I love it now - but moderately; and the many apples we'd steal from the orchard on sled hill... If there are any Rebels out there from those days of the Great Hayslip's, please establish comms with me, let's chat and catch up - many seasons have passed but Goppingen and the AYA Rebels are forever in my mind.
A half century has passed but my memories of Goppingen endure..

What a pleasant surprise this site has been for me. On December 19, 2008 I made a posting concerning my being stationed at Cooke Barracks over half a century ago, 1951-1954, with the 28th Infantry Division. Today, January 23, 2009, received an email response from a civilian employee who worked the switchboard at Headquarters and did some work in connection with JAG where I worked and with whom I may very well have had contact, though her name didn't ring a bell. I plan to respond and share remembrances from that time. Only the existence of the Internet makes something like this possible. Thank you for the site.

Heartfelt sympathies to the Weigle family over the loss of "Mama" Weigle. Several of my buddies and I spent a lot of our free time at Cafe Weigle and always enjoyed the welcome atmosphere and camaraderie shown us. It has been just fifty years since my last visit to Cafe Weigle back in 1959 but I have never forgotten the wonderful times I spent there. I must confess that there were a few times that I was there a little past curfew but when the MP's would come in for their nightly checkups "Mama" ushered me up a stairwell to "hide" till they left. I knew many of the MP's and never did cause any trouble so there was never any problem. God bless her; may she rest in peace.

Could have knocked me over with a feather when the phone rang and the caller ID said "Holloway Marvin". I answered and the voice said is this Don Hill and I said yes, and he said do you remember Kirk Holloway. I said two "K"'s with "ir" in the middle. Well we talked for close to an hour catching up on things.
I was at "Cooke Barracks" from Aug 75 to Aug 76 or there abouts. I was the SSG that ran the Auto Craft Shop for a couple of my first months there and then went to the 198th Personnel Services Company and there I was the NCOIC in Records and did all promotion and shipping orders.
I will be on Face Book soon.
Greetings to all the Kings Crossing Coffee House Family.

I was stationed in Goeppingen from Jan 90-April 92, in HHC/ s-3, 4-16 INF. I am looking for anyone who was there in that time frame. Specifically anyone who knew anything about the large network of underground tunnels, bunkers and hidden German hangar from ww2 on base.My friends and I did as much exploration as we could get way with, which was quite a bit. I am interested if anyone else ever did the same, or had any info.

Hi All!

I was a civilian and worked at the Civilian Personnel Office under Al Brinkley, among other managers - from 1988 - 1991.

Left during Desert Storm because I figured the end was near, and I was right. The post closed in 1992, as most of you know. Before the CPO I worked under Stan Lewis in 1987 for the clubs system. Mr. Lewis, how are you?

Planet Gerp was one of the best experiences of my life - so many great people!

If anyone remembers me, send me a line. I'd love to hear from you!

Just interested in knowing whether there are any folks out there that were with the 48th Trans. from 71-76, or for that fact, anyone that was there those years, interested in sharing some memories. It helps when I read some of the thoughts and memories of others, to stir up the webs in my memory. Also, anyone that remembers the NCO club in 84-85. Sgt. Adams was the mgr. and I tended bar along with another American civilian, Tom.
Greatest years of my life were the years spent in Gopp. I have fond memories of many friends I made, and lost, while there..things I experienced both as a soldier, and a civilian. Deutschland will forever be the girlfriend I had to let go of.

A CO 4/16 Inf Big Red One Cooke Barracks the one and only "Planet Gurp" May 84-86, 4/16 S2 86- Apr 87 :
Hello and best wishes to all that experienced a place like no other. By the comments and sheer number of postings, we'd be in agreement that Cooke Barracks had a profound (too strong? It did on me.) impact and left lasting impressions/memories - mostly good. I met some incredible people - Pete Kwaak, "T-Bird" Tolbert, Brad Thompson, Flaherty, Slinger, Harigal, Perez, Leadebrand, Prouty, Banks, Childress (Marty - had to be one of the best grunt NCO's ever), *Larkin, Blakey, Price (Price was a great boxer)* - the 3* of which welcomed me to Gurp without conditions, even though I didn't travel from Riley with the main group (arrived by way of 2/7 Cav Ft Hood). If I miss-spelled any names I'm truly sorry. I wish I could turn back the clock for a moment - just to say "thank you" for all the laughs. We were grunts living life to the max and so young.

What a greats stroke of luck to find this site. Fooling around with time on my hands a here I am.

I was stationed at Cooke in 1960 -1962. I was with the 504th Military Intelligence Detachment, 532 M I Brigade and we were attached to 4th Armored Div. for support and Intelligence. WE had the small building next to the American Express building. Small outfit so we were assigned to the 404th M P's for mess and also played sports on their teams. Have great memories of my time there. Some of the guys I remember fondly are Tom Towns, Matt Markey, Don Hawkins, Fred Mattis. Don, Matt and I were together at Basic in Ft Carson and at Ft. Hollabird for Intell. school. Then all of us to Goeppingen for our tour of duty. I was fortunate to be able to bring my wife Ruth with me for the last 18 months. Made a lot of great friends and lived in Eislegen in private appartment. Herr and Frau Hager and their daughter Bridgett. We still exchange xmas cards with Bridgett.

This is my first contact here but intend to keep it coming. Any one out there remember me?

I hope this gets Some good exposure.
Thanks for setting up the site!!!!

I was at Cooke Barracks from early 1989 to late 1991, minus 10 months in Iraq. I was a Counterintelligence Agent and German linguist with Det 1, 101 MI and provided the in-processing security briefings, annual security briefings, and conducted the security and risk assessment inspections and background checks for security clearances.
I went back to visit Göppingen in 1998 and the Monopol and Roxx were no longer, and I had been away so long I couldn't remember where the B10 Blick was. I was probably one of very few soldiers allowed in the B10 during those years because I knew so many of the German regulars, and I miss them all, but especially Danne (Uwe Danneman), Udo Herrman, Snoopy, and Marcus (can't remember last names).
Things had changed on post as well with most buildings closed at the time, but the former bowling alley had just opened as a restaurant who's owner was one of the nicest people I have ever met.
