I was at Cooke Barracks from early 1989 to late 1991, minus 10 months in Iraq. I was a Counterintelligence Agent and German linguist with Det 1, 101 MI and provided the in-processing security briefings, annual security briefings, and conducted the security and risk assessment inspections and background checks for security clearances.
I went back to visit Göppingen in 1998 and the Monopol and Roxx were no longer, and I had been away so long I couldn't remember where the B10 Blick was. I was probably one of very few soldiers allowed in the B10 during those years because I knew so many of the German regulars, and I miss them all, but especially Danne (Uwe Danneman), Udo Herrman, Snoopy, and Marcus (can't remember last names).
Things had changed on post as well with most buildings closed at the time, but the former bowling alley had just opened as a restaurant who's owner was one of the nicest people I have ever met.

I was stationed at Cooke Barracks from 1951 to 1954 with Headquarters Company of the 28th Infantry Division, serving in the JAG office as a court reporter. Our office was in a building, as I recall it these many years later, on the left-hand side going up the hill from the main gate. A recollection of working in that building is looking right outside the window of my office and watching a shepherd with a flock of sheep keeping the grass under control. My barracks was further up the hill on that same road on the right-hand side next to a wooded aread and right next door was the bowling alley with I think four or five lanes with German boys setting pins for tips. I was an avid bowler in those days, having had my bowling bag with shoes and ball in the bottom of my duffel bag shipping over and spent a lot of time there. I also served in the Division color guard and I think one of the flag bearers was Master Sergeant Manny Lee who had some record of note and was featured in an article in the 28th Division newspaper.
Also recall some nice German girls who frequented the Enlisted Men's Club where a small band played, made up of members of division headquarters, one of whom was a guy from New York who was a talented singer. Another highlight was a trip to Nuremberg to see the 28th Division football team play for the European championship. I found Cooke Barracks to be my favorite post in my seven years of service. I had no idea that there was all this kind of information on the Internet about a place that was important to me over half a century ago. It's been fun looking at the pictures and trying to pick out spots I recognize. I still have a number of photgraphs of the post I took while there. Thanks for the memories.

11 Bravo infantry, "The big Red One"! 1985 to 1987
I was stationed my entire tour of duty in the Army in Goeppingen, Germany. Dec 1985 to Aug 1987. I lived in the Cooke Barracks, Bravo company, 2nd platoon. My first year I was assigned to 2nd platoon HQ squad. My Lt was Rojas. I don't remember my Platoon Sgt's name, but I can still see his face. It was so so cold in the winter, but in the summer it was nice and we BBq'd between Bravo co. buildings in the fire pit. The German Fraulines were so pretty and the beer was awesome. I will never forget the "Yak Shack". Some of the fellow soldiers I remember were: John Evans, Nate Perry, Chris Hunter, Chris Heggy, Jimenez, Kelsey, Anchor Larson, Davis, Lebeouf, Chamberlain, Sgt Pruit, SSG Fennel, our Cpt Brooks. I remember pulling guard duty and freezing my @$$ off. We went to Bamburg for an ammunition bunker guard detail, Schweinfurt for this urban warfare training thing with the "Miles" equipt. We went to luxembourg for a formal dress parade stance while a General gave a speach and a French Army soldier across from our ranks in the quad, fell flat on his face from heat exhaustion. We went to Hohenfels, Munzigen and Graffenwehr. Our m113 APC heater never worked. We carriend more Dr. Pepper, pepsi, coke and soup than sense. One time at Munzingen my First Sgt re-assigned me from the field to Field KP. He then proceeded to become senile and totally forgot about me. I served almost 7 days KP feild duty. When we got back I found that he then told everyone I was AWOL, which I wasn't. Harmon, our Armory guy gave me a ride back to planet Gerp with the Dussenhalf he drove to and from that maneuver. It was cold and we were always hungry. We called each other "peezo" and took our turns at watching the 7 inch xrated TV screen at the end of the barracks hallway, while on fireguard. We smoked , drank, brawled, partied our a$$'$ of, but also policed up cigarette butts in front of the officers and NCO clubs. We started fights downtown almost every week and then fought the MP's when they came downtown to bring us home. It really wasn't our home, but for a short while it was our common place to call "life in the ARMY" and as an infantry soldier we saw Germany from a perspective only the farmers and mountain goats will concede. It was the most exciting time of my young adult life. If any of you reading this remember me or some of my fellow soldiers, please let me know.
After the Army I came back to Germany and lived as a civilian in Goeppingen for almost 12 years. I learned the German language and went to school in Geislingen. I am now back home in California where I live and work. I will always remember the "Cooke Barracks".

I was at Cook 1970-1971 with 144/141 B Co. as a 52B20 - generator mechanic. I remember being out in the field a lot. I remember living in a tent on one of the relay sites when one of the other guys and I were returning to the site and a deer jumped up in front of our truck and so we put it in the back of our truck and then cleaned it & cooked it in a fire pit we made, then almost got arrested for killing the farmers property. We ended up paying about $125 American dollars to that farmer. I remember seeing one M.P. Jeep and a German police VW driving to our site and thinking. Oh Boy…. We are going to jail. That farmer made at lease $300+ in German money. Looking back now, I feel that I knew some real good people and learned some good things in life and I am thankful for that.

I just stumbled across this site, but what a thrill. I lived across from the Cook Barracks in the little house with the sheep. Most people have probably seen the shepherd herding his sheep on base.
Cooke Barracks has been a major influence in my life. I actually ended up getting a commission as Military Police officer. I always thought the MP's were Uebermenschen because of the long hours I saw them working. Made an impression on me and when it came time to select the branch I decided I wanted to be part of them. Life can be pretty funny.

I was stationed at Cooke Barracks in the 504th Admin Co. from July 63 to March 65. I was the Assistant Division Special Services Officer, and worked for Captain Jack Harris. This was truly a great time of my life, and I look back fondly at all the fun we had during that time.

Sadly, however, I remember clearly when President Kennedy was shot. It was about 8PM German time, and I was listening to Armed Forces Radio. The entire BOQ went nuts. We were all running from room to room trying to see if anyone else knew more than we did, and praying that the President would survive. The next morning we had a very somber formation, where Commanding General Franklin read us a message from the Secretary of Defense, Robert McNamara regarding the assination. All the German populace was in shock, and would stop us on the streets to tell us how sorry they were.

I hope to hear from anyone who served at the same time as I did. I would really like to hear fromRon Christensen, Jack Harris, Bob Mueller, or any one else who was around at that time.

I did visit Goeppingen about 25 years ago, and stopped by Cooke Barracks, but couldn't get onto the post at that time. Had a great dinner, however, at the Honeydo in Hohenstaufen.

Great job on this website.

Hi everyone,

got stuck in Göppingen, when A Co 4/6th (Cohort) under First Sgt. Twyman was relocated there...with first husband...well, kinda lost him around there, too, lol.
I worked at ITT and then the Government Housing Office with Andrea, who will hopefully add a note later on
;-)(right Andy and Terry?)

Anyway, married the NBC NCO of E Co 4/16 (Sgt Wood) and we moved to Savannah, GA in the early 90's and I spent the next 11 yrs there. Now I am back in Germany, Bremen as you can see.

I miss the good ol' times, the softball games, the parties and all the people I met in my almost 12 yrs there. Still looking for SSG Gibson and so many others :-)...

Woody still lives near Savannah and we are in touch at least once a month, especially since he is in bad health now. He would probably be happy to hear from all who knew him, we talk about Göpp a lot lately.
If you are in GA or would like to give him a call to cheer him up, just send a mail to me, I will pass on his number. Right now, he doesn't have access to a computer. Anyone with VA experience is more then welcome to get in touch with me, it's tough to help him with all that from here, so any advice would be appreciated.

Take care all and get in touch :-)

Sue

Dear Sirs,
I remember the 22nd November 1963 in Goeppingen very well! My Rock'n'Roll band and I - the "Dynamites" from Esslingen - were playing in the Gasthaus SIEBEN SCHWABEN, it was located in the center of Goeppingen. Many Americans visited this location for dancing and listening. Suddenly we got the order to stop playing immediately. MP entered the ball room. We don't know what happenend. The policemen said, all soldiers had to leave the ballroom immediately and to go back to the barracks. Later, the owner of the Gasthaus said: "President Kennedy was murdered." For an hour or more we were not able to continue playing this evening.

Dear Sirs,

it was the wonderful Mrs Elfriede Naedelin-Seebich (85) - she gave me Your internet address. Now I have some questions referring to the 1950/1960's. I was born in 1943 in Esslingen (located between Goeppingen and Stuttgart, Germany). When I was young, I often visited Stuttgart's night and dancing clubs in the city. Because I was/am a Rock'n'Roller. In the Fifties, American soldiers were the teachers of the young Germans, male and female, in teaching Rock'n'Roll dancing.
My question is: Does anybody have photographs of Rock'n'Roll in Germany in American or German (night) clubs?

If yes, please scan it. Thank You in advance for any help.

Best Regards - Eberhard Kenner.

I wanted to update my contact info in case anyone's been trying to reach me.

Most troops who were at Cooke from 88 to 90 might remember me as one of the Customs MP's that took care of your hold baggage & household goods before you rotated home to the States. Also, I gave the Inprocessing Briefing for Customs to all the new arrivals up at the replacement center. Our office was in the basement of the NCO Barracks in the housing area.

Feel free to drop a line at [email link], or look me up on MySpace. It's been great catching up with you guys.

193rd Aviation Company from July 1987 - June 1991.
I had the great fortune of being stationed in the best Barracks in Germany. I stayed in Germany (Nellingen Barracks & Katterbach Kaserne)until 1995 and can attest to this fact. I lived in Manzen in the vicinity of the Police Academy in Goppingen.

I also had the Great but Sad Honor to being the last person of the 193rd to sign out of the unit. (I turned the sign-out log to the 1st IDF Staff Duty Officer, and the official 193rd AVN Set of Keys to the Barracks and offices in the hangar. It was 2 June 1991, I was enroute to my next assignment in Nellingen Barracks (MEDEVAC).

Favorite Eateries:
Das Wilder Man (Italian Restaurant)
Yak-Shak -
Burgerhoff
Gyro Stand Across Bahnhoff
Honey Do (Hohenstauffen)
Maggie's

I was an Avionics Mechanic in the Shops Platoon and some of the folks who I remember and have knowledge are below- some have been promoted (or retired)since, this reflects their rank while at the 193rd Aviation:
Frank Serrano(flt ops), SFC Lucas(MaintPlt), SSG Barlow(Flt-Plt), Spc Digby(POL Plt), Spc Chet Miller (Shops), Spc Stanley Merten (Shops), Raymond McDuffy(Flt Plt), SGT Bob Thoms (Maint. Plt), SSG Mike Castillejas(QC), CPT Dennis Davenport (Maint. Plt), SGT Carolyn Johnson (Shops), Spc Dana Dreke (Flt Plt), CPT Jo Handinero (Maint Plt/CDR). There are many other great colleagues who I remember from my days in Planet Gerp- but have not heard of since.
Paul Brady, Archibeque, Reggie Small, Larry Williams (from Gainesville, FL), SGT Bob Madigan, SPC Kauffman, SPC Wynn, SGT Johnston, SGT Ross.

Someone folks I never forget are SPC Bollinger and CW3 Bryant who died when their aircraft crashed in June 88 while returning from an FTX.

Hello everyone. It has been a while since I posted here.
Just wanted to say hello to those who remember me. I read on and feel that all that were in Planer Gurp, all in their own time, are part of a big family sharing the same wonderful memories. With that said, I am looking to contact or info on a paramedic who served between 87'/90', her name was Stacy or Tracy Chapman. If you read this please contact me or if anyone has any info, let me know. Nothing serious, just an old friend who I lost touch with. God bless you all.

Wow, the site looks great; thanks so much John, David, and the other folks who keep it up. The foto albums are great and bring back a lot of memories.
I was stationed HHC, 1st Armored Division for October 1971 - May 1972 when we moved to Ansbach. I worked in Personnel during the time of transition from Vietnam to peace time. Lot of memories and a shout out (as they say now) to Sandman, Russo, Denny of Minnesota, LTC Black who I worked for, Vogel, who took me on my first ski trip, and at least a hundred others whose names fade from memory. Also, a toast to the Class VI and Vonnegut novels on those cold winter nights and the lovely woods surrounding the kaserne which offered me a place to go when I thought I'd be in the Army forever or at least 31 months which felt like the same thing. (Anyone remember the break in the fence behind 501 Admin?
Hope all are doing well and again thanks for the site.

Hi all, I have written before but it’s been awhile. I have heard from some of my old MP buddies and others. I’m still looking for my two old roommates Kruger and Young. I was stationed in Planet Gerp. back in 1987-89 with the HHC 1st IDF (MP). I do miss the Yak Shack and the other eateries. I put a lot of miles on those old VW Vans, which if you turned to hard sometimes the sliding door would come off. I still have some old friends that I haven’t heard from like Shay (Medic) and Steve (Pilot) who got me out of the bar, plus all the other people I met while working the Main Gate. Next year will make the 20th year of being gone from there, but it feels like it was just yesterday. Fellow MP’s like hunter, Wilson, Young, Kruger, and some others made my time over there fun. The memories that I have of Planet Gerp will last forever. Hope to hear from those of you that remember me.

I worked on Cooke Barracks for over 20 years as Photo Instructor, first in the Service Club later in the Recreation Center for Morale Support Activities.

From this time, 1971 - 1992 I have hundreds of photographs left, many of people which I cannot identify anymore. G/A-week activities, sport events, Recreation facilities, also Group pictures of parts of units before they departed or the complete colleges from the MSA.

As well as the last picture of General Henslik etc., some of Colonel Parker, General Price, troops returning from Irak war and lots more.

The germans who departed after leaving work at Cooke Barracks meet once a year at the Frisch Auf Gaststätte - for the 16th time this year. I made a CD-ROM of the collection of pictures as JPEG's as well as Power Point presentation. If you send me your postal address I send you one. I am sure, you and all others find pictures of people they knew. Just tell me, you are going to use the pictures to everybodie's benefit and not for any profit purposes.

First, thanks to Dave Wisnewski for making this collage of memories a living memorial to all us fellow "Gerps". I attended Mr. Pitillo's Seventh Grade class at Goeppingen Elementary from 1956-57 and hated diagramming sentences and learning fractions snd the most punishing of all, those math questions where you had to figure out if two trains left the station at the same time, etc.,etc. They called them thought questions in those days and I didn't have a clue....I got picked on because I was lousy at sports but loved art and music (yeah I was pretty wierd). My dad was a Captain with the 8th Golden Arrow and he wouldn't lt us be the "cool" fifties kids with your Levi red tag cut off and your belt buckle worn on the side and your hair long and greased in ducktails. Somehow I survived it because I loved living in a foreign culture and devoured Schnitzel and pommes and broetchen for breakfast and spruedel wasser from the nearby cantine. I loved sledding down the hill and meeting German kids who I could say a few things to because I was learning German with Miss Hilda once a week at school. I loved the teen dances at the juke box in the AYA. I loved the American Housing Area and the forests and the hike to the top of Hohenstaufen. I loved the cuckoo clocks and the Hummel figurines and the decent,hard-working, hospitable German people who marvelled at our 1955 Red/Orange Buick convertible
and all those other wonderful American cars of the Fifties. I am 65 this month and working as an Army civilian in Mannheim ACS. Thanks for the memories you wonderful Army people out there!!! WE ARE FAMILY!!!

Went back to Goeppingin as a civilian in the early 90's. Town has grown a bit and Cooke barracks has changed. Ma Weigles was still their, but under another owner. It is a weird world. I was stationed in Gorp from 1988 'till 1991 when we folded colors after desert storm. "ALPHA GATORS" 4-16 Inf. The first time I found this site was when I deployed to Kosovo in 2003-2004. Two weeks ago I got my order to go to Iraq and just this evening I received a phone call from my old supply Sgt. SGT Hass. We drove many many miles during reforger, graf, hohenfels, ect.
I have not spoken with Sgt Hass since I left Germany in 1991. The kicker is that we live close to each other, and he saw my name in the gest book from the comments I made a few years ago.
I am in contact mostly with Ranger Reed (Scott Reed) who used to be an infantry soldier who turned into a REMF when he went to drive for the S-3.
WOW. What a night. I invited SGT Hass to my house as I only have 2 more weekends before I ship to Iraqon September 19, 2008.
I used to serve as the BN S-6 section chief for the 56th Stryker Brigade Combat Team here in PA, and I will be serving as the PST NCOIC for our Brigade Commander during this deployment (I have 20 years already between active, reserves and Guard and will retire after this last deployment).
I am looking forward at seeing Sgt Hass again and will do my best to keep in touch with him. I see Ranger Reed every so often as he lives in Ohio and we would definetly like to have a 20 year reunion of our deactivation in 2012.

If there are any former desert storm guys from planet gurp who would like to go back to Germany and look back at places like the guard shack, the Rock Fabrik in Stuttgart, The Dream, Rock Palast, please drop me a line and lets see if we can make 2012 a REFORGER for us.

Sincerely,

SFC Dennis A. Kearn

Just checking in again. I was in the 504th Admin Co from Jan 1964 to July 1966. Worked in the PSD. Hung around with Joe Malorzo, Blaine Bemis, Roger MacDaniel, John Trotter, Tommy Dawid, Sal Anzalone, Donald V. Smith (Smitty), Bill Wyckof, Joe Banton, Ed Case, Gil Silver. I remember Ma Wagleys, Seben Swaben (I think after Dec 1965 it was closed to GI's.) Aah, the good ole days. Grew up in Goeppingen. Has anyone ever heard of or from Smitty or Mike Parsley? Worked on a project at night with SP5 Luger and Sgt. Ramos. We had the biggest blow out in the back of the barracks in July 1966. There were so many of us leaving, it was huge.

I was stationed at Cooke Barracks from October '75 to October '78. B Co. 1/26 Inf. I remember the days well. LT Kissel was my platoon leader. PSG DiLeo (who I ran into in Tucson) and PSG Aten were my platoon sergeants (not at the same time, of course). Capts. Rose and Hazel were my company commanders
I had a German girlfriend named Monika. I miss Goeppingen. I remember going to The Adler Keller for a good ol' Schwaben Brau. The Marklin model train factory. It seemed Grafenwohr and Hohenfels were more of home to me since we spent so much time in the field, but "Gerp" was a real party.

I was stationed in Planet Gerp from January 1989 to April 1991. I was assigned to C Co. 4/16th Infantry under CPT Murphy. The battalion commander at the time was LTC Russ Honore, now LTG Honore. My favorite memory is of LTC Honore giving a great speech about "cussin'" in front of the chapel...it lasted about 40 minute long. Toward the end of his speech, one soldier dropped out (apparently locked his knees and down he went). When Honore saw the soldier fall right in front of him, he immediately let out a string of expletives that rendered his previous 40 minutes null and void.

I was stationed in Geop from 77 - 79 with the MPs. It was a great time. I will always remember when SFC Harris decided that he needed a painting detail for the barracks. He called an alert at 2:00 a.m. We had to bring all of our gear into the day room for inspection. If SFC Harris and 1st lt Varco asked to see something and you did not have it you were put on the detail.

I remember Rick Wagner painting a sunny-side-up egg on the day-room wall. The hallway to SFC Harris' office were adorned with the stars representing all of the states. Of course he had 5 stars over his door. Everyone got to sign their name by the star representing their state.

We also had a lot of parties in the yard next to the barracks, cooking on the BBQ pit in the yard.

I was stationed at the Flugplatz from around June/July of 1955, assigned to the 9th Head and Head Company, worked as the assistant to the Division Psychiatrist until I left for going backk home in Oct. of 1956. Looking back, I now realize that I had a great time while assigned there. Many great friends, great memories, etc. While there I had a real old Porsche, a 1950 model that I did take back to the States with me. Many years later, in about 1976, while on a TDY trip on behalf of my then employer, NSA, I rode through Geoppingen, on the train and on to Munich. I wish I could have stopped for a couple of hours, but such was not possible. Would love to hear from anyone who was assigned there during the same years as was I. I am now 77 and still in pretty good shape.

I took basic training with the 2nd Armored Rifle BN 50th Infantry 4th Armored Division Fort Hood, Texas. After basic training I was transferred to Company A 4th Quartermaster Battalion. I was the Company A Supply Clerk. (May 1957 to April 1959). The 4th Armored Division Gyro over to Germany in November 1957. I enjoyed being at Cooke Barracks. I was able to attend the 1958 World's Fair and many other activities during my tour of duty in Germany.

In 2006 My wife and I begin to plan a reunion for Company "A" 4th Quartermaster Battalion for May 2007 in Pigeon Forge, TN. As we begin to plan we found men from HQ & HQ 4th Armored Battalion who wanted to attend. Men from Company "B" 4th Quartermaster Battalion were also in attendance. This would be our First Reunion. After many long hours on the computer and phone we were able to organize everything for the first week in May 2007. We had 56 men to attend. With our wives, children and friends we had 106 in attendance. Ninety-five percent of the men had not seen or talked to each other since we left Germany in 1959.

Our next Reunion - May 3rd Thru May 6th 2009, Music Road Hotel and Convention Center, Pigeon Forge, TN. Please send E Mail for more information.

Through the site, I have had contact with old friends, so it has proven itself to be worthwhile. Steve Ure, Helga Sonsino, "Gammy" & Gaby! Mmmmmmhhhh!
I would esp. like to hear from "Scotty," the MPI (maybe Ralf could help me there?) or Sgt. Roger Mills from the 48th? I will post more names as they come to me. Anyone feeling they would like to write, plz do!!

Hey everyone,
I'm from Goepp, my son's father (Michael D. Norfleet, he was night manager at the EM/NCO Club in the 80's, he died in 1982 in a traffic accident on the road between Cooke and the old NCO Club)) and my ex-husband (Ronnie Harville) were stationed in Goepp. I worked at Cooke Barracks in the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate from 1982-1991.

I am still working for the US Forces in Stuttgart, as Chief International Affairs.

This just took me down memory lane and all the fun times we had back in those days. Hanging out at the EM-Club and NCO-Club (remember George, the Greek Bartender ?), the Kronprinz and at the (Black Haus)Life. German-American week was the best, with all the food, music and fun people.
I can't put names to all the faces I remember but all of them are in my heart. Good or bad times, I wouldn't miss any.

I spend the last hour reading messages. Wow!
If you remember me, send me an email.
The best to all of you out there.

1987-1991. I was assigned to the MP Platoon (HHC 1IDF and for a very short time HHC 299th Spt Bn) as a Squad Leader and as the PM OPS NCO later on. Lots of great memories of Cooke Bks and the City of Goeppingen. Glad to see this site recommissioned as it will tend to bring a bunch of us together.

Munsingen, Graf, Hohenfels, REFORGER They were all great and I had a bunch of great Soldiers working with and for me.

After I left I went to APG MD and ran in the Army ten miler. My bib number was 7031 and when I sent my race picture to friends there in Goeppingen they had it run in the local paper as if I had selected that number for my race bib. It was too funny when I went back a few years later (after Cooke Bks was closed down) and visited with them.

I was stationed at Cooke Barracks with CSC 1/26th. from Jan.1977- Mar.1980. I have a lot of memories of those 3 years of my life. Hohenfels, Graf., Vilseck, all of the alerts (especially the one when we loaded up everything, moved out to ralley points and thought we were going to war with the Soviets). All of the railheads, and Reforgers. Man I can remember freezing my butt off in the field. There were a lot of good times when we were not in the field. Places where I drank a lot of great beer, The Hit(downtown Gerp.), Charlies Inn had really good music (Eislingen), and the Blackhouse (a lot of dancing and disco music). I went to 2 or 3 Octoberfests in Munich with 3 of my best buddies. My best buddies were Manuel Arias, Ron Morgan, Bob Osterhoudt, Calvin Davis, Will Tominek. I had a really cool Plt.Ldr. 1st.lt. I was stationed there from 64-67. Right out of high school, basic training at Fort Dix. I was at the Headquarters barracks in Goop .Had several jobs, motor pool clerk, maintained the gym near the airfield. Played a lot of basketball and softball.

Al Pino was a lifer and ran the Gymnasium and organized a lot of the athletic activities.

Some of my close friends were James T Confer from Pennsylvania, Jose Rodriguez from Corpis Christi Texas. Jody Craven from Fort lauderdale, Ray Horn from Tampa.

Spent a lot of off hours at the Rathskeller on post drinking 15 cent Lowenbrau and listening to the Juke box.

A lot of guys used to come thru at the Admin Company waiting orders to be transferred to other sites in Germany.

Upon arrival at the 4th Armored reception center at Cooke Barracks in June '69 as a PFC with an 11B1U MOS, the enlisted man reviewing my education (BS ME)and test scores asked me what I was doing Driving an APC. He then told me he could pull me out of the field and get me assigned to the 504th Admin. I remained behind as an OJT 71H and eventually finished my stay in Goeppingen Nov.'70 as the records clerk for the 504th Admin and the 404 MP Companies. Traveled extensively with barracks buddies John Downing, Jerry Feinstein, Randy Lewis, Red Ronnenburg, etc. Worked at post theater and earned enough to purchase a 1970 650 BSA through Canadian PX in Baden Baden spring '70. After Randy and I assembled our bikes (disassembled in shipping crates) with the hand tools provided and the tools from our community (4) owned '56 VW, we spent the rest of the year cruising Amsterdam, London, Birmingham, Munich. Heaps of good memories - Mess 3, Ma's, 3 Mark Spaghetti, flip tops, Fasching, Oktoberfest, field trips, Hohenstaufen, Stuttgart House of Colors, 1986 Beaujolais, Morocco, Led Zeppelin.

Addendum:
I took basic training with A Battery, 16th Atrillery, 2nd FA Bn and then was assigned to A Company, 4th QM Bn. Sailed to Germany on the good ship Upshur and returned on the Patch a year and a half later. "Hung out" at the Seben Schwaben, Gruner Baum, Cafe Weigel and the Badischer Hof during off duty hours. Cafe Weigel was my favorite, always good food and good times.

I was stationed at Cooke Kaserne from November 1957 until May 1959 after basic and advanced training at Fort Hood, Texas from May 1957 thru October 1959. I was assigned to "A" Company (maintenance section) and functioned as battalion dispatcher for the 4th Quartermaster Battalion.
I will never forget the great friends I made and the experiences of that era of my life.
We had a terrific fifty year reunion in May of 2007 at Pigeon Forge, Tennessee! It was great to see many wonderful friends of so long ago! Needless to say, there was much reminiscing of shared memories with old friends.
We are all looking forward to the next reunion scheduled for May 2009, again at Pigeon Forge. Any one interested may contact me and I will see to it that your name will be added to our list.
Best wishes to all.

In November, 1957 my 4th Armored Division 'gyroscoped' from Ft. Hood, TX to Cooke Barracks which we commonly called 'the Flugplatz'. I was 20 years old and secretary to the Chief of Staff of the Division, Col. Anthony Kleitz, until he was tragically killed in a 2-place helicopter crash in early 1958. I departed back home to Minot ND in September 1958 and after college located to CA and now to Portland, OR. My friend, whom I met in early 1957, and my wife took a nostalgia trip back to Goeppingen in 2003 and saw the new commercial/residential park on the Cooke Barracks location. Hohenstaufen Mountain was nearby and the Honey Do cafe was a popular hang out for us in those days getting there in my friend's '51 Mercedes. I have wonderful memories of all those days.

Great site. I even found my picture on this site. The one from Mama Weigleys. It shows Mama the waitress and I am the first person to the right facing the group. What a suprise. I was in the 48th Transportation. I spent most of my time in supply. Great times downtown. I had two girlfriends while I was over there that I remmember. Angie who's dad owned the Pizza place downtown on the corner. The other was named Carla, she was blonde and a really great girl. I spent a lot of time at the NCO club wasting money and playing the slot machines. I had a blue VW with a Black strip from front to back that my buddy flipped up by the sports platz one night drunk. I got into a little trouble with the co over that one. A lot of great guys in the 48th and I have fond memories. Some of the names were Butch Blevins, Capt Cupp, Capt Ford, Major Olsen who had a wooden leg. William "Bill" Gordon who was a wild one. Tough as nails but nice to everyone he liked. Drank too much, danced crazy and got into to many fights. I went to the Prom with a girl who's dad was the 1st Sgt of the 144 sig. bat. Latin name. I still have the prom picture but I was just filling in for her boyfriend who didn't make it. Lots more stories but that's all for now. I would be happy to here from anyone. I worked with Bill "Steve" Bowen who was the table tennis champ and in the 144th sig. for a few years. He married a german girl. He has since passed away in his hometown of Richmond Indiana. Stil one of the best table tennis guys I ever saw. Ron

Sometimes memories of planet Gerp happen for no reason. Call them "flashbacks".
HHC, 1st IDF in it's last days at Gerp..
Maintenance platoon is what kept seven of us commo soldiers from going to Desert Shield with the Commo platoon.
All of the Commo platoon returned safely to Planet Gerp, and I felt a tugging of my heartstrings that day.
Still amazes me that I drove all over Germany and Switzerland without mishap..

I was stationed at Cooke Barracks from Oct 64 to June 66. as a clerk with the 504th Admin Co. I took my discharge overseas and myself and two other members from the 504th. I finally returned to the states(NJ) in Nov of 66. In Oct of 1967 I was fortunate enough to gain a position as a professional fire fighter in Union NJ. In May of 1969 I married the former Elba Garcia, he father was with the 144th Signal Co. We were married at Fort Gordon Ga. I retired after 25+years at the age of 47. Took a full time/part time job with no responsibility at all and loved it. I delivered pizzas for Dominos and worked mostly for a friend of our two sons who owned several stores at that time. I more or less stopped working after a quadruple coronary by-pass several year ago. We moved to SC IN April/May 2006 to be out of the cold Jersey weather and to be near our oldest son and our granddaughter who arrived after we made the move. My wife and I enjoy traveling. I am very active in the Catholic church and instruct 6th grade Faith Formation.

Got to Cooke Barracks in April of 1985, as the first dentist assigned to the 1st IDF. I reported to Charlie Company, 299th Support Batallion. Company Commander was Lewis Thomas, Batallion Commander was LTC Causey, with MAJ Dave Shaw as XO. There were two female lieutenants as platoon leaders with Charlie company, and I have forgotten their names. There was a transportaion company in the 299th, with Scott West as commander (he made flag rank). Bob Baska was the Division Surgeon, replaced later by Mark Lovell. There was a female physician at the TMC, first name Debra. She was replaced by Craig Kirby. The chief nurse was Nancy Whitmire, who moved Stuttgart that summer. At the Dental clinic, the man in charge was MAJ Querna, who left in June of 86. SP4 Bobby Williams and SGT Jeff Abel served with us at the Dental Clinic. Brenda Edwards was up front, with Blanca Abel serving as an assistant for a time. SP4 Lisa (forgot last name) learned hygiene there.

I have met others here in Hartselle, AL, that served at Goeppingen during their time in service. Haufbrau beer and Hoenstauffen brings back memories. I had a child born at Klinic am Eikerk, spelling missed I'm sure. We lived at Lindenbron, between Goeppingen and Swabish Gmund.

I was stationed at cooke barracks Oct.63 to Oct. 1965. I was with 144th Signal Bn. 4th AD. C Co. Along with Ronald G. Turnpaugh,Raymond Adolph Von Horn, and thousands of others, we protected Germany from the very real threat of invasion by the Russian Hoards. We had learned at briefings that if they did invade, the Gasthauses would be taken first in order to gain a foothold and cut off our beer supply. How long could we have lasted ? For this reason there was always 4 or 5 of us stationed at each and every Gasthaus day and night. Turnpaugh had such a sense of duty he once spent the whole night undercover hidden in a bathroom stall, at one of the aforementioned Gasthauses.Put it back on!!! Von Horn spent many long hours attempting to extricate information from suspected female agents. If they wore a skirt they were a suspect. P.S. Tanya Mason, Ray Horn and I both knew your dad Greg, and we will send you an email soon. For any of you guys who remember us get in touch. With Regards,Willie T.

First duty assignment was to "Gerp" E Co 4-16 Inf "War Eagles" Dec89 - May91.Was a co-hort private that came from 2nd Armored Div from Garlstedt. Remember the suck runs through Spader woods and around the airfield. Land nav to the Metzgeri and Bakeri, drinking beer up on top of Hoenstauffen.Behind the barracks bbq's Going to the field and the locals bringing crates of beer and fruit and inviting us to dinner in their homes. And the deployment to the Gulf. Those were good times.

I was assigned to the 504th Admin for a couple of months in 1963 - I was a tanker by training but they needed clerks and I had a high clerical score. Anyway I didn't have a clue and I had to maintain the personnel records for a Maintenance unit (126th I believe). Some time that summer and much to the releief of those Maintence guys, I was transferred out to McKee Barracks, at Crailsheim. I spent the rest of my TOD as the Courts & Boards clerk for the 3rd Bn 37th Armor.

Wow!!! Where we were and where we are today. So fast and yet so long ago. We lived the Goppingen life at Cooke Barracks from 1980 until late 1983. Was a fantastic and hard time. One we still cherish the memory of almost daily. Looking at the videos and pics we can tell that life has long past but the memories remain. Just this last year we met with a former friend from our error, Jay Warren, and the rekindling of memories was great. I was the commander of the 573rd S&S Co and would hope some friends of my era would also be looking at this web site. Hope to hear from some of you soon.

I have visited your Guestbook several times and I find it also interesting and rewarding.
I was stationed at Goeppingen 1960-64 as a medic and gave many soldiers a physical exam prior their return
to the States or retire. I was also a member of the 4th
AD soccer team and soldiers chorus.(SP-5)
I served also in the Air Force at Eglin, Fla.(64-68)
My son-in-law (LTC) is now with the NATO Hq. in
Belgium, he was also in GP as a generals aid.(Capt)
So I do have lots of memories during my service and
afterwards. I am a civilian since 1968 living in Goeppingen where I am a concert pianist and teach piano.
Let me say "HELLO" to all those of you who served here
in Goeppingen, may all of you enjoy a healthy life!

I served at Cooke Barracks from July 84 through Apr 88 with D Co. and HHC 4/16. It is sad to see the post in such a state of disrepair, but the memories of days gone by are alive and well in my heart. Early morning strolls to the track park with a 50 on my shoulder, road marches in every imaginable kind of weather, and those wonderful GI parties; it just doesn’t get any better than that! I was at Cooke Barracks in 1976 with my dad who was an MP Physical Security NCOIC I was 10 at the time and spent a lot of time with him at the MP station I remember playing with the rabbit that they kept in the courtyard off the jail cells. We lived in an apt in Hohenstaufen during the bicentennial july 4th ( i was so thrilled to be on a german mountain on that day) then we moved into base housing on the very top floor and had a huge apt that my dad told me was the servants quarters when it was a german base during ww2. I had a lot of fun back then. I was sad when i heard that the big red 1 had left germany and cooke was no longer a active base. Thanks for the photos it brings back memories. Is there anyone out there that remembers my dad SSG Raymond L Farrow

My service with the 4/16 put me in contact with the many of the best soldiers I knew during my 23-year career. I wanted to recognize five brothers-in-arms who made the experience among the best in my life. All five have now passed on, but their contributions continue to live through many of us.
SFC Reynolds was a soldier who held high standards and challenged his troops to be better soldiers. The magnificent 40th Anniversary of the D-Day Invasion was, to a great degree, his work.
SFC Donovan was a team builder with a wry ability to do anything without complaint.
MSG Russ was candid and honest. He could fill a room with tears, fear or laughter.
Major Favati was a unique mix of iron and velvet.
LT Dudka could make sun appear on any dreary Goeppingen morning.

Great site! I lived in Goppingen twice in my life and have nothing but outstanding memories of the place. The first time was with the 1st MI Co. FWD, 1st IDF and the scond time was as a civilian. My daughter, my granddaughter and my ex-wife all live there, so I continue to have friends and family over there to this day. I often miss the old place and am sorry to see that it is slowly dying away.
