I served in the 504th Aviation Detachment at Goeppingen, Germany and was a Clerk in the main office. I had aleady studied German for many years prior to going to Germany in the Military and it really enhanced my experience while in Germany. Fortunately, I also traveled all over Western Europe while there, having driven to places as far away as Italy and Spain and France. But I would love to get a roster of GI's who were also serving in the detachment during the 1958-1961 years. Does anyone have one?

Thank you.

I was assigned to the 28TH DIV HQ BTRY 107TH FA BN in Ulm, Germany in the late Fall of 1953 at the age of 20.
I was then sent TDY to HQ BTRY 28TH DIV ARTY in Goeppingen to be on one of the TACP (Tactical Air Control Party) later called ACT (Air Control Team).
The new U.S. Army Teams consisted of two U.S. Army personnel and a U.S. Air Force jet pilot in a 3/4 ton truck equipped with HF, VHF, and UHF radios, antennas and equipment.
The Teams or Parties had formerly consisted of U.S. Air Force personnel and equipment, used as a forward arm of the artillery to pin point enemy positions with air strikes in forward areas that would contain personnel from both sides.
The U.S. Army was now to provide all personnel and equipment except a jet pilot of course. I drove many miles around the picturesque German countryside with friendly Air Force personnel viewing castles and other landmarks when we weren't simulating airstrikes.
In 1954 the 28TH Division was returned to the States (on paper only) and replaced by the 9TH Division. I was then TDY to HQ BTRY 9TH DIV ARTY from 9TH DIV HQ BTRY 84TH FA BN.
I returned to the States in March of 1955.

I "gyroscoped" to Neu Ulm,Germany with the 8th Infantry Division in August 1956. I was with HQ Battery of 43rd FA Battalion. I was then sent TDY to Gerp and was assigned to HQ Btry, 8th Div Arty I was a radio operator (CW and voice) and was assigned to what was called an "air control team." We went TDY into the field on maneuvers, mostly to Hohenfels, and called in simulated air strikes on the personnel who were in the field under combat training exercises. We were not allowed by German law to dig any foxholes, so everything had to have a camouflage net put on it. Trucks, cannons, etc. That was fun. Not!

I had a 3/4 ton truck to keep warm in but all the infantry had were tents. Poor guys. I had a partner who didn't drink or smoke but I usually had a couple of bottles of beer stashed in the vehicle to also help keep me warm on cold nights.

Gerp back then was a great town. Lots of friendly young women, those who would speak to us, and
they really wanted us to bring them back home to America. Very cold in winter but I believe the other seasons there were quite mild, pleasant. I rode the train back down to Ulm to see a girl I had met there
some, but also had a girlfriend in Gerp when I could not get a weekend pass.

I should have traveled more locally in Germany but I was young(19)and so wanted to see the "hot spots" of Europe. I went to Switzerland, Austria, Italy, French
Riviera, and Barcelona, Spain as I recall on my leaves. All were exquisite vacation spots for us GI's.
We were recognized everywhere and were well received
by the locals. Food and lodging was very inexpensive.
We "rented" a car from one of our staff sargeants
and drove everywhere. We had plenty of vodka with us and then bought orange juice, readily available in most places, and made "vodka srewdrivers."

The time went fast for me while there as I was always
on the go with TDY assignments, standing tall for an IG Inspection, keeping the bierhalls in money, the EM
club too, and generally trying to enjoy all the different training, experiences day to day.

We did have one big event while I was there. Russia invaded Hungary. Everything was shut down, passes and leaves cancelled. We knew something BIG was happening but we didn't know what it was for a while. Live ammo was going to be issued to us, etc. Sadly we didn't go to help them. Ike blew that opportunity big tme. They
are, were, a brave people. So, if anyone reads this blog and can identify with it send me an e-mail. Those
were special days with special fellow Americans.

They retired the 4th AD colors to Texas and we became the 1st Armored Div. I had a great little German girl I nearly brought back to the states with me.I had a lot of great GI friends as well as some German friends. I miss them all. Oct 1963-June 1965 144th sig bn. spent a little time with lrp unit located in schwabach. most of my time in germany was spent at cooke barracks. co B 144th sig bn then next door to co C. my mos was radio tt but all of us with that mos seemed to end up as CW operators(morse code]. we ran the garrison radio in the basement of 4th armored HQ bldg and another station from the back of 3/4 ton truck parked along side of a baseball field near the air strip. that radio was part of a corps net. the pictures of what cooke barracks looks like today were strange to look at. many a day or night I walked up the hill from the barracks seeing the tanks parked in front of the hangar on the right and the helicoptors in front of the hangar on the left on my way to pull my radio shift. its obvious all things will change. its been 42 years.

I had signed into the original book, and am glad to sign in again.
I was with the 1st IDF Forward from 1988 to 1991, right after our commo platoon came back from the Persian Gulf.
A lot of my time at the planet was a blur, since we all drank a lot of beer at the time. My favorite times were during the time we were preparing to close the base, as I spent most of those days at the city swimming pool.
I was with the maintenance Platoon in HHC, working for SFC Vaught. Memories of some fun times.
Eventually, my time was up, reality reared it's ugly head, and I was transferred to Vilseck.
Thanks to the old book, I have been contacted by old friends, and continue to enjoy some long distance friendships.

I was adopted as a newborn by a german family and I am looking for my natural mother.

I was born on the 11th November 1971 in the Hospital at Cooke-Barracks. The Name of my mother was/is Martha R. (Rae) Cunningham, born herself on the 13th Nov 1953 - she became 18 two days after given Birth to me - today she is 52.

Martha R. Cunningham lived at "Barrack 703" in Schwäbisch-Gmünd near Göppingen - thats probably the Hardt- or Bismarck-Baracks. Both of the Baracks are closed today, in the early 70s the 56th Field Artillery was located there. In the records of the adoption no father was mentioned - she was not married. I found out, that she went back to the States. I don't know where they went but originally she's from Wisconsin.

The question is, if a 17 year old girl was member of the army or lived here in germany with her parents. In the meantime Martha R. Cunningham might be married and has a different last name.

If anyone knows her I would be very thankful for any hint.

I arrived at The 18th AG Repl Det on 12/18/1975 and departed Goeppingen on Dec 15, 1978. I loved it so much I extended for 6 months. I worked in G3 Training and then G3 Plans during that time period first as a radio operator and later as an Operations Sergeant. I had the time of my life and often look back and wish I had stayed. I had a couple of years of German in High School and it made for a great time in Germany. The places I loved to go were (in no particular order) The Hit with my friend Hayo spinning records (nur Rock n Roll) and drinking Dinkel Acker CD Pils, Pic Pic, Wienerwald, Panarama Restaurant in Hohenstaufen, Concerts at the soccer Platz (Manfred Mann). There was a big Disco that i can't for the life of me remember the name but I loved the Hawaii Toast, going to Stuttgart to see the Rolling Stones with Billy Preston, The club Boa in Stuttgart, Map Exercises in Munich, Drinking "THE BOOT", Making out with my girlfriend at the Taxi Stand outside the gate and too many more to mention.... This is a great site and thank you all for your pictures and rememberances.

I was at Cooke Barracks with the 404MP Company from June 1967 until July 1968. I lived off post in a German residence on the third floor. This home was just outside the air field. My wife was with me and my son, John Christopher was born in Stuttgart,
Germany Oct. 23, 1967. I was the Colonels driver for awhile. I pulled duty in the Provost Marshalls office and do remember "SGT. Cheatham". I remember his spit and polish uniform, especially those shiney boots. I had an unfortunate accident driving to duty one dark snowny morning on my Renault and "hit" a Greek citizen who was walking in the roadway. He had a bad headache for about 6 week. I was lucky that I did not hurt him more seriously. I was not charged but remember that they did pull my license while they investigated the incident. Beautiful country and great experience in Germany! I pull my old slides once in awhile and remember those days.

I was an army brat, we were stationed at Cooke from 67-70. I arrived during the summer of 1967 and attended 6th - 8th grade at the local army dependent school. I remember names, like Raymond Cabello, Tim Holliingsworth, Kenny Freeman, Ducky Freeman, Don Goodrich, Roland Jantz, Tim Clark, Annette Smargon, Greg ?, the memory fades after time.

I remember camping up behind the Infirmary. Hanging out at the Snack Bar. We could put on Tiny Tim on the juke box and instantly 3 people would get up and kick the juke box. Played a lot of pinball there too.

I live in the apratment next to the officers club, down by the creek for a year, then we moved over to Kennedy Strasse, about a hundred yards towards town from the Candy Store. Ah, the Candy Store, I spent my life's savings there.

Played a ton of marbles there between the apt buildings. Colected bottles from everywhere to earn money.

Played around with going up to and into the DP Camp that was up on the hill to right of the entry gate to Cooke.

I was sorry to hear the bowling alley burned down, I spent a lot of saturday mornings there. Spent a lot of time developing film and making pottery in the entertainment cents. It was as much fun as the AYA stuff. I even played on the Tankers football peewee team one year.

We loved it there. When we didnt know who the president was but watche the PM of Germany, my dad decided we needed to get back the USA.

I met up with a number of the previously mentioned people back in the states. When you "tour" with the military, most of your friends have similar intenerary.

Hello everybody,
my name is Bodo Straub, I am living in Göppingen, the town where Cooke Barracks was situated. I am only 21 years of age, so I don't have any memories from the time when it was still a US-military base. But I am in the area, that is now called "stauferpark", quite often, my dad used to live very near, and the former clinic and the chapel are now cultural centres that are frequently used, especially by the youth of Göppingen. You still get an impression of how it must have looked and been during the time you guys were there.
I am currently applying at the "School of Journalism" in Berlin, and therefore I am writing a report about a building, situated near the chapel, in former Ruby Street (today "Privatstraße"), between the chapel and the forest. It must have been a residential house for GIs. Today it is being used for bands as a location where they can exercise, because they don't have any other.
Does anybody know which building I am talking about? Can anybody give me some information on this building, describe how it was living there, how the daily routine was looking like...? I am glad about any information I can get. If you want to, you can also contact me [via the email link].If anybody wants or needs some information about the location today, about Göppingen or anything, I am sure I can get it for you.
Thank you very much for your help,
Bodo Straub

I was in Alpha company 4/16 Inf from 85-87. Nelson Twyman was the 1SG. SFC Cleland was my PSG. I had some great memories of the place before I read this site and have certainly generated some more since reading through some postings. Hope to hear from some old A co friends after so many years. I spent 21 years in and have retired. Spent most of my time after Gerp in the 82nd Abn Div and a Ranger Instructor (RI) and even received a commission. Gerp is where it all started. A place where I expended all my (at least most of)youthful ignorance before deciding I wanted to be a troop forever. I have some great memories of some great people. My team Leader Pete Kwaak, Squad Leader Marty Childress, drinking buddies of many...Banks, Chapman, Flaherty, Jones, Crocker, the good looking MP chick who's name I forgot, Saskia Medina - the beautiful girl on hohenstaufen mountain who rode horses, Robinson, Lockery (didn't forget you my friend), SGT Suth, and many, many more!
Who could forget that place, especially when you where 18 and not so smart. The Croc, Yac Shak runs, Easter riot training, railoads, alerts and humping that ammo from the basement only to put it back a few hours later, Stuttgart and the Roc Fabric, Rock concerts, Mike Miller and our rebuilding of the volkswagon...only to crash it going to see AC/DC. Motor pool guard duty watching your buddies come back from downtown drunk at 2 am or later. What fun. Thanks for providing me a place to grow up Gerp and Cooke barracks.

I was a fixed wing crew chief with the detachment of the 504th Aviation Company, 1964-65 at Goeppingen. Too many years have gone by and I have forgotten most of the names of the guys, but Donald Ishiara, Captains Bob Caliboso, Frank Smith and Tom Hunt stand out. If I look through my old pictures perhaps some more will come to mind. All in all a very enjoyable two years. Beautiful country, nice people, and an especially wonderful bunch of guys in the unit to work with. One of the messages posted talked about sneaking down to a gasthaus when they were out in the field, and trying to find their way back to their unit in the pitch dark (and all this time I thought I was the only one foolish enough to do that!!!). At the time I was there we had two UH-1B Hueys, an H-13, an O-1 Birddog, and a U-6 Beaver. Saw a lot of the area from the air. I actually started out with the 144th Signal Battalion, and transferred to the 504th within a couple months of arriving at Cooke. The first year I was there our quarters were in the Hangar with the aircraft. We then moved into the barracks on the hill behind the hangar. From the pictures it looks like a lot has changed. Sad, but thats progress.

BRAT HERE. I lived there around 85-89. I don't remember the building number but it’s was the second Building up the hill coming off base past the MP station. I remember running around the woods all the time and even running through the stream. There was also an access tunnel to the water treatment facility (I believe that is what it was) and used to crawl through that. There was a large wall in the woods and a ruined area with a bridge we used to think that there were old German military tanks and stuff underneath (ahhh the imagination of children) I remember going up to the old shack and then the Bowling Alley that replaced it (remember the old bowling alley burning down) I think the old bowling alley had 4 or 5 lanes and that was it. I remember the scare at the school where it had to be evacuated because of a mysterious bag and the MPs having to search everyone’s back packs. I also lived off base in Fauerndau and was close with Jerome and Nicholas Washington (Brothers), Michael and Shannon Price (Siblings). There was a Kevin, Kelly and many others but I do not remember the names. MAN I loved this place. I also remember the health course up the hill toward Hohenstaufen and having a wooden fort there to play in and even the Easter egg hunts. I also remember living in Robinson Barracked from 80-83 from the ages of 5-8. Good times, Great memories, Best time of my life. My Father was Master Sergeant Dewey F. Mathews. We worked at the reenlistment office. Small building next to the Motor Pool and PX if I remember right.

I was stationed in Gurp back in '78 & '79, with the 1st IDF JAG, Claims Office, before I was transferred down to Neu Ulm to take over the Claims Office. I've traded emails with SFC "Butch" Paige, who was my NCOIC, but haven't been able to contact others from back there. Right off the top of my head I remember LTC Dennis Corrigan the JAG, Murray Baxter, Ron Burbank, John Utley, Bill Reilly, Lisa Lomaistro, Hans Abuchon, Karen Woodbury, & Gary Burger.

I remember one time as a lowly PFC having to deny a claim made by a SSG, who was none too happy about it. It was just after the office closed when he came by to straighten me out and intimidate me into paying his claim. He was ordering me to "at ease" when I turned and walked into the next office, with him right on my heels. I'm sure the SSG was just a little surprised when he found I had just led him in to have an impromptu meeting with LTC Corrigan! Suffice it to say, he didn't get his claim paid. LTC Corrigan was one of the coolest officers I ever had the privilege of working with, and we had a good laugh about how I handled the situation.

I did some volunteer work with Randy Palmer and the DYA swim program. Richard, Robert and Michael White are three names that come to mind right off. There are some other kids who I remember but the names escape me. I remember going to the big pool in the mountains and the lake down near Ulm.

Richard White, Randy Palmer and I went down to Austria (or was it Switzerland) on a scuba trip, but Richard and I took a pass on it since the lake was frozen over. They used a chainsaw to cut through the ice. If I remember correctly it was rumored the Nazis had sunk some secret airplanes down there.

I arrived in Goeppingen in May of 1961--assigned to the Goeppingen Sub-Post--and left Oct 1963. Turned out we did the Post housekeeping stuff--like maintaining the buildings and grounds, the commissary, the Class 1 functions, supporting the dependent households and other, more mundane tasksfor Cooke Barracks and the two kaserns in Swabish Gmund-- Hardt and Bismark. The good news was no field duty, a small company with almost as many officers as enlistees. In my 2.5 years there I ran the Household Furniture warehouse and the Class 1 distribution center. Occasionally, I also worked in the the Class 6 (beer and spirits), laundry PUP, the army gas station out on the Stuttgart-Ulm Autobahn, the Commissary, the Base Theater (projectionist), and drove the C/O--for ceremonial functions only. My red 1963 VW convertible was purchased in Dec '62 from the Goeppingen dealer for $1564.00. I saw it in the showroom window on my way one night to Harry's (on the next corner)and had to have it. Friends in Bartenbach, Swabish-Gmund and other nearby towns. A son (Marcus Urbanek) born in 1964 after I left--now living nearby. Hung out with Sgt Hopkins, Sgt Flanigan, Spec (Tweety) Livesay, PFC Bond, Spec Baltzer, Spec Murphy (dental tech),Sgt Marvin, Spec Terry and many, many others whose names are now foggy--not the least because of the vast quantities of bier we all consumed there! When I left, Capt Clark was head of the section, Flanigan was my SFC and I had made it to SP/5. I had my mind set on helicopter school and was ready to re-up but my eyesight was borderline so I passed. Good thing too. 'copter schools would have put me, in the middle of 1965, probably flying over a rice paddy, trying to avoid (very) unfriendly fire! Went back to Goeppingen with my wife in 1989. They let me on the post for a drive-by. Much of what I remembered was accurate if not a little worn. If I have the opportunity, I will return for a bier at the renovated Guard house--a place I never had the occasion to stay in, execpt to guard one of our own who got a bit sideways one night. Over the years, have had contact with other Cooke folk--one was to meet the son of Lt Col (Mrs) Dort while working for a Cable TV franchising operation in NY. He had been a dependent, in 1962, living on the circle and could also recall his mother chewing on the hapless GI's in the Household Furnishings and Furniture section--and that would have been me! One of my (now) closest friends (Bob Holderness) was an Attorney for the JA but he was stationed there in the early 1970's..
Thanks to those who created and maintain this site. It helps to focus the otherwise fading memories of a very special place for a lot of people!

Wow, what cool site. Man, it has been almost twenty
years the last time I sat eye's on Cooke Barracks. I was in the Stinger Platoon from 87-90 HHC 1th IDF. Boy those were some good years. Found my wife of almost twenty years there and have two boys now. My life change alittle bit after leaving the IDF. Did my twenty and got out. I'm now working in the remodeling business, flipping houses along that line of work it's great.
I think about you guys in the platoon and what great times we had at the MTS and the bars we went to. What ever happen to Willis Bunch, Randy Hogen, Crowsdale, Lilley, Marsh, Avent, Andrecci, Harrington what a winner, Smith brothers, Wolf, Lastley, and everyone else who enjoyed those days at the barracks. When back to Germany summer of 2006, but did'nt make it down to my old barracks. Maybe someday I will make back. I wish everyone the best in their lives and if you're ever in this part of the woods drop by and we'll talk about the good old days.

I remember that aide! I remember that chestnut-haired teacher, too. And some of what you tried to teach me about writing while we were both on the Rolling Review must have stuck, Harry. Was it really 40-some years ago? God, we're in danger of becoming middle-aged. Goppingen was a fun place back in the mid-sixties, especially at four marks to the dollar. We were luckier than many because we put out the Rolling Review at the German newspaper publishers in Goppingen, so we got to work off base for at least one day a week and eat off-base type of food.

Give my love to that chestnut-haired teacher, Harry. Maybe we'll get to catch up with each other again soon. Any of us got a 70th birthday coming up?

I was in PIO (now PA)at Cooke Barracks from September 1964 until November 1965. Now, I write for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch -- and in 1992, I wrote up some memories of Cooke Barracks:

SMACKED - THANKS TO YOU, GEN. PATTON

Byline/Title: By Harry Levins

Publish Date: Monday, 3/23/1992

Back in 1965, a reporter from The New York Times visited Cooke Barracks, my Army post in Germany. He had soldiered there in the '5Os, and curiosity drew him back.

He wrote a home-is-the-soldier piece, datelined Goeppingen, West Germany. His editors ran it in a Sunday paper, stuck way back with the girdle ads. I had to agree with their judgment; the story fell sort of flat.

Ever since I got out of the Army, I've thought I'd like to go back to Cooke Barracks and try my hand at the same home-is-the-soldier story. But this month, I learned through a wire service story that I'd blown my chance forever.

The Army's VII Corps is closing up shop and coming home, and among the first of its shops to close was Cooke Barracks.

The Germans in Goeppingen never called it Cooke Barracks. They called it der Flugplatz, ''the air base,'' because it took shape as a Luftwaffe base in the 1930s, long before the U.S. Army set foot in Germany.

When I was at Cooke Barracks, its stucco buildings housed the 4th Armored Division's headquarters and signal battalion -- maybe 1,000 soldiers. Mainly, we kept to ourselves. Downtown Goeppingen had little in the way of earthly delights, and anyway, our fumbling ignorance of the German language barred our way like barbed wire.

My home-is-the-soldier story would have said little about Goeppingen. I wanted to revisit my old hangout, the Cooke Barracks Officers Club -- because there, on a Friday night in August 1965, Gen. Patton changed my life forever.

To be precise, the instrument of change was Gen. Patton's grandson. Like me, he was a first lieutenant at Cooke Barracks, but that's where the similarity stopped.

I labored in a shabby staff building as a public affairs officer. Patton's grandson sat at the right hand of God in the plushness of the headquarters building, where he served the division commander as an aide.

The aide had clout. Just being Patton's grandson made him a force to be reckoned with along the bar at any officers club. But on top of that, the aide's father wore the four stars of a full general, and the aide spent his entire day rubbing elbows with our two-star division commander.

Needless to say, majors and colonels treated the aide with a deference they withheld from other lieutenants, like me. I didn't care much for the aide, nor he for me. He shone with gung-ho spit and polish; I was a newspaper slob masquerading as an Army officer. At the officers club, we normally kept our distance.

On this Friday night in August 1965, I held down one corner of the bar, making small talk with Trixie, the German barmaid. The bar overflowed with customers, because a new crop of civilian teachers had just arrived from the states to staff the grade school that the Army ran for the GIs' kids.

The aide held court at the far end of the L-shaped bar, and I noticed that he was making a move on one of the new teachers, a young woman with long, chestnut hair.

The teacher was talking to someone else and tried to ignore the aide. But in his little world, nobody ignored him, so he pressed on, as cocky as Patton in Normandy.

The aide dropped his arm around the teacher's shoulder. She brushed it off. As I watched with morbid fascination, he put it back. This time, she flicked it off.

He put it back again -- and without missing a beat in her conversation, the teacher backhanded him right in the kisser. She belted Gen. Patton's grandson! and given her civilian status, he couldn't do a damned thing about it except retreat in haste and humiliation.

I smiled broadly and said to Trixie, ''I don't know who she is, but I'm in love with her.''

I still am. General Patton had found me a wife.

It's been more than 50 years (1953-54) since I was stationed at Cooke with the Signal Company attached to Division HQ. Did some TTY time at the SS Cassern in Nuernberg. They thought we would confuse the Russians if they decided to make the cold war hot. My wife and I visited in 1995, but could not get past the gate since it was turned into a displaced persons camp. I still have fond memories of Cooke and of the guys who I served with. Gene Maloney, Jack Adams, Joe Enia and others whose names I've forgotten. The home-brewed beer; schnitzel; the manuvers throughout Bavaria; the chicken-s--t; the brown-shoe Army; magnetic relays, vaccum tube FM radios and dipole antennas; pot-belly stoves(to warm the equipment?); conveys through one-lane cobble stone streets; MATS flights and leaves that allowed me to see many of the major sights of Europe. Too bad none of my five sons will experience what I did.

Are there any other 1950's old guys still out there?

I remember Capt. Broxton telling everyone during his speach about Pay Day Activities.. [If your gonna smoke that [Camel Shit], do it at Rowdy's place, and not in my barracks..] He was a good CO..

Lt. Edmonston loved to rappel.. After hours he would take a bunch of us to rappel off of anything anyone would let us jump off of.. He and I were the two most experienced rappelers.. I did my share of rappeling from choppers in SE Asia..

Everyone knew me by Rowdy and my wife's name was Irene, [Rene]..

Anyone recognize any names here I would like to contact as many as possible.. I did find Larry Wayne from Arkansas.. He lived here in Texas with us for awhie.. His Brother Coy, was KIA in Vietnam..

Since the guestbooks before last year are now offline, I'll sign in again.

I was at the 504th Admin Co from May 1966 to April 1968, working in the Personnel Services Division as NCOIC, Personnel Actions Branch (until February 1967) and then as NCOIC, Officers' Records Unit. It all seems so long ago--hey, it WAS long ago. But that was a crucial time in my life, and a lot of vivid memories (mostly happy) came flooding back when I happened on this site about 2 years ago.

cookebarracks.com is indexed by Google, so I'm listing a lot of GIs from back then in hope that they will look up their own names and come here. Some already have, though some signed the earlier guestbooks that are now offline. They are CPT Rodney N. Hoots, PSD chief; Richard Wand, Dennis Kirsch, Jim Corcoran, Noel V. Bourasaw, Joe Malorzo, Steve Walker.

Others who haven't signed in here: Major General E.C.D. Scherrer (CG), LTC Luther A. Brock (AG), MAJ Charles E. Bowling (AG exec officer), 1Lt W. N. Alexander II (OIC Personnel Actions), SFC Robert Machmer (NCOIC PA), SP5 William E. Williamson, Ray Canova, Gerald Damsker, Samuel Carducci, Harry Meserole, Don Subrt, Johnnie Wood, Hans Reith, Gary Lavorgna, Dow Tierney, James E. Gilmore, and John R. Winchell; 2LT George Gray Jr., Thomas Spear, Steven Goldstein, Daniel Lindvall, Michael Clarken, George Louden, and Larry Cheek. Civilians I knew included Jane Ericson, Cinda Forsythe, and Claudie Pettigrew.

Before May 1966 I was with 3/51 Infantry, Ferris Barracks, Erlangen (APO 09066), a 4th Armored Division line unit, for nearly 7 months. So I'm including some names here that were never at Cooke Barracks: LTC Black, SP4 D. Ross Marshall, Douglas Lawter (?), Bob Newman, Jasper (last name?).

Fortunately, none of these names are on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington.

On the web I've found that Lt. Alexander is now a judge on the 22nd Circuit Court in Danville, VA. George Gray has made a career in community theatre and lives in Charlotte, NC. Tom Spear is professor emeritus of history at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with many books about Africa to his credit.

Thanks again to David Wisniewski for creating and maintaining this great Web site.

I was at Cooke Barracks from Dec.1986 to Dec.1988. I was in the S&T Platoon HHC 4/16th Inf. I drove the 5-ton trucks that transported supplies and supported the infantry companies. I remember spending alot of time fixing flat tires in the motor pool and driving to Honenfels, Grafenwoer and Reforger 1988. After Germany I went to Fort Riley, Kansas from Jan. 1989 to Aug. 1990, then the Massachusetts Army National Guard in Desert Storm from Sept.1990 to May 1991.

After I stumbled upon this site, I had to revisit my journal and photos. I arrived at Planet Gurp, assigned to Det, 1st MI Co, G-2 ASIC, from 11/1981-01/1983. Some of the best people I remember were Larry & Holly Lewis (Larry was in JAG office), Ron Melluish, Richard Whitney, the Phillips, the Keiths, Patrick Brennen from Schwabisch Gmund, 1LT Phyllis Gerben, Co Cmdr CPT Tony E. Beam, SSG John Brunette, and The Dew Crew: SP5 Brock, Glenn Grubbs, William Simone, Jackie Bell, & Gary Moulton! Places & Events: The Club House, German-American Friendship Week, Training at Hohenfels and Grafenweir, The Boot Tree, The Bowling Alley, and don't forget the Club House. Ha-Ha-Ha.

I returned to Germany in Aug 1987, as a Civilian, working for the 501st MI Bn, S-2, 1st AD, at Katterbach. One day, I drove down to Geoppingen and found not much had changed in 4-1/2 yrs.

I was stationed two years in Goeppingen, Germany between June 1987 – June 1989. I was in the MP’s, we were the HHC 1st IDF then became part of the 299 HHC Co. I remember all the field and gate duties that we did, along with all the beer drinking. I had two roommates Brain Young and Morman Krueger. I also had allot of friends outside of the MP’s, like the two German Girls that pick Peter and myself up to play pool at the Glacises down in Goeppingen. And I can’t forget the Medics that lived next door, when we moved down the hill, out of the HHC 1stIDF Bldg. While we lived in the HHC Bldg. we were on the same floor with the all the Females. The chopper pilot Steve and his family took in and I like the home cooked meals his wife made. For those of you that remember me, feel free to drop me a line.

I was the admin specialist/driver/gofer for Colonel John Petracca, Asst Div Cdr and CSM Jim Ligon. Remember all the times we had to set up a field office at Grafenwohr and Hohenfels knee deep in snow...buying my first stereo at the base PX (still works even today), the movie theater, the mess hall, watching baseball games from the barracks, the NCO Club on the hill and much more. Dear friends,
I will visit Göppingen in the next weeks. Some of you told me to take pictures of their former homes. If you want pictures were you have lived in Göppingen and what has changed, just give me your former adress and your e-mail. I hope, I will be able to do it all. I will only stay one or two days in Göppingen. I will put new pictueres to the album.

Greetings from Germany - Since yesterday, Germany is a target for the terrorists. We lost some very brave and young guys. Our Minister of "Defense" just told us today, he is sorry and the people who had done it will be caught soon. - The one who did it is dead. Which one will be caught? Bin-Laden????

I think, he never served in the Forces.

It is allways the same thing, some politicans say lalalalala and they think it might be o. K.. They will allways say, they have died for the country. They are hoping that in a few weeks no one will remember. I just want that our politicans will get the sound of a bullet just near their ear, after that they may change their underwear and then take care about the families, which lost their sons and daughters.

Do not take Mr. Lafontaine for serious. He called the German soldiers and the NATO in Afghanistan terrorists. He is leader of the former communist party of the German Democratic Republic.
Thanks to our brave troops, cause of them, he will still be able to say those ugly words.

United we stand. God bless you all

Was Custodian of Classified Documents in AG Classified (basement of Hq Bldg) w/SSG Smith (Smitty) and then Chief Admin Svcs (AG-A)w/SSG Willis Riser across the road in AG Bldg next to Div Aviation. AGs were Wm. L. Selig and then Wayne M. Duncan. CPT Frank Childers was my boss for the last year or so. Lived first in Donzdorf in Herr Grupp's building and then in post housing past the Commissary across from the grammar school. Our group frequented Gasthaus Krone which is no longer there. Shonblick in Eislingen and Wannenhof above the post were also favorites. Goppingen was a great place to be at the time (especially considering the alternative). Have very fond memories of my two years there.

I am a german architekt. I had been in the golf club goeppingen from 2000 to 2006. I have seen the deveolpment of the former military use to civilian use. In some times I regret, in other times I prefer. I hope you understand. Sorry, but I`m German.
The MP (Wache) is now a restaurant. The big hall, we call it Fliegerhorst is now for auditions. The place before is gone. They have made it down. 2005, there had been a show of american cars. The big hall is o.k. This building is protetected by the Landesdenkmalamt (A part of our governmentwhich takes care of history). In 2004 I met the "Conservator of History" Mr. Dr. Pressler. It was he Day of "the open building of history to everyone".
Today the investor (Göppinger Wohnbau) tries to make a buisiness place out of the ground. The airfield is almost lost. They will bring the tower down. I have tried to buy it, but it was to big for my garden. I hope, they will let it stay were it is. The tower stil exists.
Your Church is rescued. They wanted to bring it down, but some very brave young people have taken it to a "Place of Culture", somethng like a gallary of art or just a meeting point for the youth, we call it disco.
Most of the buildings for the "normal" soldiers are gone. some changed to "More-Familiy-Houses" with balkons and terrrasses. The nice "Officiers-quarter" is gone. An Investor had placed houses between them in the garden. It is awful. They call it "garden" or "green place". Now you can watch, what hte neighbor is eating. Forget it.
The shooting area is still used by the german police, but they have changed some parts. I do not exacktly what they have done. I just vistited it one time.
Now the counciliers of Göppingen try o make a buissines park out of the barracks. The Golf Club will be gone in a few years. The NCO is the clubhouse now, it is a restaurant.
The airfield is almaost gone. They have given it back to nature. Bushes grow all over the landing zones, they have broken up the ground.
We now have an Area for EVF in the new "Stauferpark" , the THW - Technical Helpinng by catrostophies - They had been in New Orleans and pumped the water back to the ocean. Sorry but, I am happy of it of, giving just a little back for helping us after WW II.
Ladies and Gentelemen, you are doing a great job in IRAQ and in Afghanistan, our airplaines and soldiers will help you. Some people in Germany do not like it and do not like Amarica. I am sorry abot the fact. But I like it and I love you all. I belong to the conservatives in Germany, to the Christian Democratic Party. I hope that all of you will go back without a "Purple Heart". I am sorry about the discussions of the Socialist Party in Germany. Thank you for all you have done and given to us. Never forget, not every German is a bad one.
I met you guys and girls in Augsburg at Thanksgiving, I met you too in Hammelburg, Thanks to all of you, specially to the MARINES in Hammelburg. God bless America. Semper fidelis.
It is only a small part of mine, giving you the information of the Cookebarracks. I am proud of giving you somethimng back. I will send you more . For more information, pleas contact [the email link].

Die Wache is open. This is the café/club/lounge in the former MP gatehouse at Cooke Barracks. From their logo it looks like the building has been expanded. The opening party was on January 19, and from the photos I've seen online, it looks like the place is a success. The web page link can be found on the cookebarracks.com front page.

There's a bar, open from 11am until late, and a restaurant with an outdoor terrace, open for lunch and dinner. Also a club with live music/DJs open on Friday and Saturday nights.

I don't find any photos of the rooms on the web site, just lots of twenty-somethings having a good time. A year or two ago, there was talk that the owner was going to have a Wall of Honor remembering all the MP units that were stationed at Cooke Barracks and used the gatehouse; they were gathering the unit insignia. If anything came of that, maybe someone could go to the club, photograph the display, and upload it to this site? I'm sure lots of us would love to see it.

Anyone remember Sgt Crockett who was one of the team leaders at PSD? I know he went to EOD school and was wondering what ever happened to him? He was a wild and crazy guy. Also John Dooley, Dave Oliver, Steve Hacko, Al Schneider, Joe Grey ? Chaffee. Anyone who remembers them or knows of their where abouts please drop a line. I still remember the numerous trips we took to Heidenheim (sp?). Can't remember the name of the company but they recruited all these women from all over Europe-it was like the league of nations-I believed they all stay in a dorm like building call the Voheim.(-sp?) Wonder if it is still there?
Also want to thank all the current troops out there who are serving or have served over there is IRAQ. Give em hell guys and wishing you a quick and save return home,---God bless and keep you!!!!!

Thanks to my 'ole Cooke Barracks roomie Linda Porter Gandy, I discovered this wonderful site. I worked in G-5 from 1975-77 on The Traveler with Randy "Murph" Murphy, freelanced for the NWZ, drank and danced with Danny Thompson, Bill Brown and Mark Foster, ate dirt on REFORGER, at Graf and Hohenfels, marched in all parades. Where are you guys? Have not stayed in touch with anyone except Linda since I moved to Florida, working for The Miami Herald, and then California, where I've been fighin' crime, cheatin' death with the sheriff's department for past 18 years. Would love to hear from Goeppingen alumni! Stay safe!

I was in the 1st Infantry (Big Red One!) as a SP4. Worked as secretary/vehicle registration clerk at the MP Station 75-77. Went back to Sacramento, California and was in the 91st Division out of Fort Baker, CA where I earned my SP5. I wrote a message before but not in great detail. I am now a tax accountant living in Aggiland. No, I did not graduate at Texas A&M, I started school in California and finished with my degree at Lamar University in Beaumont, TX.

My superiors were SFC Bobby Colburn and Captain Richard Demberger. I remember our three interpreters - Rudi, Rolf and Gunter. Also one of our crazy desk sergents Jerry Hester! I had so many "big brothers" over there. And I have pictures guys! I really enjoyed my tour of duty. I have kept in contact with another WAC Patty Campbell for the past 30 years(I can not believe it has been that long)and just found my old roommate Karen Lemon on this website!

What I'm after this time is a tragic "friendly fire" incident in Tent City, Grafenwohr, the summer of 59? (60? 61?). An arty round overshot the impact area and hit sleeping troops -- anyone have any info or memories of this?

I was stationed in Cooke Barracks from June 61 to Dec. 63 and assigned to the 504 Admin. Co. I was a personnel team leader working in the Adjutant General's Office and also was the jeep driver for AG when we went to Graf. and let many convoys on the autobahn. Being in the army and assigned here was not like being in the army - had too much fun. Boy do I have fond memories of "Goepp. Town". I spent alot of time down town in the GreenerBaum and Paradise and Mama Waglies (that where the MPs usually hung out). I also remember the "Egg House" but I never was in the place for reasons only those stationed in Goepp. would know. Even when we went to Graf we always found away to go down the strasse. My Co was Capt. Treatwell-I remember one day we were out running when the CO found the hole in the fence we used to use to go down town Graf. I could write a book of my good times there. I also remember about 13 of us going down to Barcelona in three cars on leave for a couple of weeks. What a good time. One time we were on 4th Armor Div manuvers in Karlshrule (Black Forest) and a few of us when for a walk in the woods (no lights) when we came across a gasthaus in the middle of nowhere(it was completely black outside)and when we went inside the place was crowded with guys in fatigues. After being there a short while, the MPS came and raided the place and we all took off in the dark, all running down the hill in the woods and found our way back to our tent. The only name I remember was Barry Dolan from Boston. He and I had a good time in Barcelona. I could go on and on about my experiences in Goepp Town.

I'm searching for a Sgt. Dan Neal who served during the time that I was there (86-87). He was kind of a short dude, was either a driver or a mechanic, was married and had 3 girls, drove a green vw bug that was constantly breaking down. I was in Alpha company at the tail end of 1SG Bucho's time there (1896 to 1988). I was in third platoon and had SFC Randy Ziglar for a PSG and CPL Alton Suggs for a squad leader. We started in the temporary barracks while the main building was being renovated and then we moved in. I remember when Steve Suth was a SSG when I was there specifically because he had a CIB and explained to us the history behind his combat patch (173rd ABN). I remember Mike Freitas, Tony Mitchell, Steve Molangi, Micah Abrahms, 1SG Mantia, 1LT Fraga, CPT Todd, and SSG Trimmel. I think at the time we left for French Commando School, they had changed the company structure. I remember many trips to the yack shack, Stutgart, Graf, Hohenfelz, Nelligan Plains, and up to the mountain behind the barracks on PT runs. Our barracks front door faced the back gate of the post which is where we used to sneak in after the all night drinking parties. I also remember the alerts with the APCs and pulling guard on the motorpool. Where they had dug out (on accident) the underground complex from WWII.

I happened on this site by chance. I am currently in Iraq for the third time. And have earned my CIB (3) Panama, Gulf War 1, and this one. I have been married for 12 years and we have two boys at home. I truly hope that this short note finds you and yours doing well and I look forward to hearing from you.

Decided to repost from my original of a couple years ago. I arrived in Germany June 66 as an artillery "cannoncocker" assigned to the 14th Armored Cav. Was diverted to the 504th Admin and then to the Finance Section working in the Replacement Section on the 3rd floor doing the inprocessing of the new guys. In early 67 reassigned to the office at Monteith Barracks - Furth, but made it back to Cooke quite a bit.

I posted a few photos (page 8 and 9 on the photo album) - some of which are similar to Tom Merrifield's (quite likely we passed each other on post).
I remember we had a new cook in the mess hall who was fantastic. Of course one of the officers with stars on his shoulders heard about him and took him :( .
Anyone remember one of the company formations in front of the barracks when a 1LT was standing on the hill, stumbled, and went head over heels down the slope? Did wonders for his image :)

Hello. I was stationed at “Planet Goepp” between 1988-1990 in Det. 1, 101 MI (Bloodhounds!!! Always tracking the enemy!) I remember the Yak Shack, TV Jahn and lunch at that little eatery in the hangar building called Maggie’s. LTC May was 4-16 commander followed by LTC Russell Honoré (now a Lt. Gen.). Anyone remember the time when the Germans were working on the water system and the entire post came down with a nasty case of salmonella? There was an alert that day too! The clinic was jam-packed. What a disaster–but amusing in hindsight. Drop a line. Also checkout the 101 MI yahoo group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/101MI/) Pix of then and now.

I really enjoyed the short time I was actually living in in Goeppingen, volunteering with the DYA swim program in my spare time. I was back up there on business at least once a week when I became the Division Claims NCO. The drive back and forth to Ulm was beautiful.

As, I was reading some of the postings, I began to think that, yeah, it was a good time. To all my friends, and acquaintances that were there, hello. I hope you’ve had a good life. And to those who became lifers, and are looking to reach 30 years in service. Stay safe.

I’d never thought I’d say this, but I’m saddened to learn that the barracks was torn down for the most part. I’d planned on visiting. But never got around to it.

I’d really be interested in hearing from anyone that was there when I was. I’d especially like to here from: J Dean, D Cade, R Rivera, J McNeil, Bell, Cervantez, K Davis, P Hoke, F Ausweigan ( sorry if I misspelled that Fred) or anyone that was in HQ platoon at the time.

Peace to you and yours.

I'm a army brat and my dad was stationed at Cooke Barracks from 1984-1988. I think he was in "C" co of the 299th SPT BN.( was a long time ago but i think that is it). He was 1SGT Stephen L. Gantt. I went to the elementary school and Stuttgart High school. Remember friends like Amanda Parker ( still my best friend) Dana Gabbert, Darrell Durant, Ronda R. Cyrstal Glover, Lisa Cope, David and Chrissy Koston, Bryan Anderson (my little big brother , CSM Ronald Anderson's son)and those that remember my dad, yes he and Anderson are still best buds, they talk everyday. LOL I remember loads of people, too many I can't think of them all now, but if anyone remembers me and would like to talk bout old times, feel free to email me, or if you'd like to get in touch with my father, i'm sure he would love to hear from anyone.I loved Germany and miss it all the time. Best times I had in my life where at Cooke Barracks and the little town of Faurndau. I'll never forget it.

I was stationed with HHC, 1st IDF from 1982-1985. If you were there then, you may remember me as the girl with the camera (I was a Spec4 writer and editor of "The Traveler" base newspaper).

I've managed to stay in touch with an important few friends from my days as a young Army chick. But there are a few I would love to find out where they are now and how their lives have turned out. Some names that come to mind (but certainly I'd love to hear from others who remember me):
My favorite three Air Force boys -- Mike Reimer, Dave Wells and David Jenkins; my old roommate, Sue Engevold; the CSM's son -- James Hawley; Wayne Smith who was from Wyoming; and Mike Luttman (spelling?) -- he was an armor officer in G-5 at one point.

Thanks Bill for telling me about this site. It seems Goeppingen shaped the lives of many. I know for me it was a time of fantastic memories, great experiences, and significant lessons learned. I returned in 2001 and in spite of the changes, I confess the connection to that part of Germany, remains.

Hi, folks. I was at Cooke 1966-1969. I worked in PA at 504 Admin. Friends included John Francis, Tom Spear, Sgt. Machmer, George Gray and many others. Memories flooded me, as they no doubt do anyone who served there, when I found this website. Mainly this is a note of thanks that the website exists; but also I hope someone I knew back then will drop me a line. I live in Rome, Georgia. Parts of me live in Marietta, GA, in Princeton, NJ, in Asheville, NC, and in Goeppingen, Germany.

I've been looking at this site for about two years, finally decided to write. I was at Gerp' from 86 - 89. I was an Army brat. I had my 13th b-day at Gerp in 86. Actually, the party was at the hotel downtown where we stayed for a few weeks when we first got to Germany. My dad's name is Paul Beaucage. He was a SSG. Not sure where he worked. I played basketball for the DYA for two years. Went to Gerp American school and HS in Stutgart. I remember the 1 1/2 hour bus ride to HS every day!! I also remember playing football in the field behind the Yak Shack and asking the GI's to get me into the Movies to see Top Gun (I was too young). Great memories. A lot of friends I'd like to hook up with, if anyone remembers me, shoot an email. Later!

Then I did home child care. There are so many that we would love to hear from. Kevin is retired in September 2005. This page really has brought back some memories.

October 1986 to 1999 was my first tour as Medical Platoon Leader, 4/16 INF, at Cooke Barracks, followed by XO,C, 299th Spt Bn. My fond memories of my mentors, friends and soldiers have never been matched. "Planet Goep" was a great place to grow and learn. Special thanks to SFC Edwin W. Carter and TOP Bucko(sp?). They along with Vince Brooks, Fuzzy Clark, Big COL Ed, Todd Nethery, J.Bokor and others became my friends and mentors. My guys were men of character and integrity and they reinforced leading by example (Schepisi, Houghton, etc.)
I will never forget the team spirit, trips to Grafenwohr, taking my platoon skiing in Bergtesgaden and drinking/singing in Munich, Stuttgart and other local festivals. Let the good times and memories roll!

I was stationed at Cooke Barracks from July of 1964 to
December of 1965. I was assigned to the 504th Admin Co and worked in the message center. I played on the
flag football and softball teams. We won the post championship in football one year and were runners-up to "C" Company Signal the other. I played on the post
all star softball team as the third baseman. Would love to hear from any one stationed there during that
time. Especially Pete Campbell, Dave Oliver, Gus Panart, Tom Westgate, John Trotter, Roland Jones, Dupree and big Al from "C" Company. Al and I played
on the All Star team as shortstop and 3rd baseman. Or
anybody else that remembers me.

I just found this website and it's like hearing a favorite song from 20 years ago, bringing you back to that moment in time... I was in G-2 from 88-92. I remember you John Edwards, you gave me Jim Morrisons "American Prayer". We were in G-2 together - remember Geiger, Meriweather, Marooney, SGT Wolfe, being in the freezing cold field all the time. I was shocked to find you PETWAY living in Missouri of all places. I'm here too. Damn small world! If your ever at the Harrah's Casino in NKC look me up. I'll be dealing Poker upstairs. I could write a real racy "Coming of age, having a nervous breakdown" book from our times in IDF. It truly was the best and worst of times.

Hi everyone. I was in HHCIDF from May 86-May 88 in Decon Platoon. Reading through the posts brought back alot of memories. I remember Maggies, the Yak Shack, the Honeydew, Swchwabisch Gemund (sp) and many more. I lived on post for the first year and then after getting married mid-tour, lived on the economy in Jebenhausen.
I enjoyed touring Germany and spending time getting to know the countryside and the people.
Thanks for the site.....
