Well, once again I would like to wish everyone a happy new year. I see so many people who were at Planet Gurp around the time that I was there. So many years have gone by but it seems like yesterday. The 4-16th crew Poole, Gore, Pertillo, Brown, Reeves, Grant, Steele, Twining, Lasley, and so many others. My best memories are at Cooke Barracks. I graduated from Stuttgart High School, and I had the best time of my life. Happy New Year. To, BB, Jazzy, Jovannah, Steele, Dominique, Manning, Jones, and every one else.

Well, it's snowing like hell outside, and I thought I'd peruse the pages of the good 'ol Gerp/CB website. As we approach another new year, and I reflect as I read the postings, I'm reminded of how fast it all goes, and how we never know how long we will be given. Not trying to be a downer, as much as I'm so thankful for the times I have had, and how my time in Gopp. ranks as one of the best in all of my time here.
I wish everyone a joyous, bountiful Holiday season, and all of the Best Wishes for the coming New Year. If anyone reads this, that knew me, please, feel free to drop me a line. I've already had contact with several old friends (I need to call you Steve, sorry)and it was a wonderful feeling. I'd like to know if anyone knows where George McDonald (MP) is, Tom Struthers, "Hosie" Garza, Larry Wiens, "Shorty" Ashworth, Sgt. Roger Mills.....I could go on, but the memory bank is cracking and popping!! Think I'm short circuiting...taxing it!!!! Not only did I have 3 great years there after Nam, but I stayed on and worked for Firma Wackler, packing/unpacking GI families, as they came and went. Anyone remember "Rock", another American civilian who was like a brother to me? Hope to hear from y'all.

Hi, I was born in the Army Hospital at Stuttgart BadCanstaat in December of 1960. I wonder if anyone knew my dad, a Sergeant Major names James Taylor. He met my mom on base at Cooke's as she was a secretary there (German, English speaking)and her name was Marianne. It was really great to find this site!

Oh my god, (in honor of Verene)! Jim Larens
That was a long time ago. Was stationed there from 89 to 91 with the 101 MI BN.
Other than Hohenfels or Grafenwoehr, I had a blast.
Had to be one of the better posts to be. Once I came states side, that was it for my career.
Very nice site!!

We arrived at Cooke in November 1962 and my family and
I remained there until December 1964. I was a 1LT when I arrived and a CPT when I departed. The most notable event of our stay was the birth of our second son in the ambulance between Goeppingen and Stuttgart Bad Cannstadt hospital. The other significant event, which I have written about elsewhere on this site, was the crash of the helicopter when trying to put a cross on the bell tower of the Catholic church. I was assigned to the division chemical section then headed by LTC Gerald Hoover, followed by MAJ Leon Pannier, then LTC(COL) John Cassidy. We had a good time in the section, as along with Elliot Lipson, Larry Fleur and others we conducted a chemical school at various locations in the 4th AD area. Those times in Germany were especially memorable, as for those of us who remained on active duty it was the last time we had a "stabilized" tour with our families before the turbulence of Vietnam disrupted all our lives. I now live about half the time in Italy and recently my wife and I visited Nurnberg and Erlangen, where I had also served prior to coming to Goeppingen. Unfortunately, we did not get to Goeppingen. Best wishes to all who served at Cooke and do get in touch with me if we served there at the same time. I'm always willing to share memories.

Bravo Company 4/16 INF aka "PFC Pratt" 1988-1989 at Gerp. Thanks to all that cohart company and all the old soldiers that left and deactivated for your help. After my fun times at the Yak Shak and downing a Few at the NCO club a few field problems. I had to leave due to an extended family illness and death stateside. You all-(especially you TOP) really came through for me. From there I was attached and stationed at Ft. Lewis where I served out the remainder of my tour with the Tomahawks until deactivation in early 90. Today I am a Mechanical Engineer in the state of Idaho. Have a wife of 16 years and two beautiful daughters. I don't know what happened to many of you, Like SFC Root, Sgt Donaldson, PFC Burt(cohart Roomie), Devey (drinking pal), James Lentini (Old Roomie before cohart), Lt. yeah can't remember but had someone thrown in jail for throwing his bicycle out the window oh yeah ESTES and all the rest, feel free to contact me anytime. I stumbled across this web site and as I read the postings had chills run through me as the memories came back as vivid as if they where only yesterday.
I was with A co 4/16th Inf with the cohort A co Gators form 84 -87. I was a private in 3rd platoon under SFC Cleland. I was 18 and life evolved around the field, YAC SHAK runs, the croc, stuttgart and the Rock fabric, beer fests, beer, and german girls. TYWMAN was my 1SG. I arrived after the original Gators had been their about a year. Great guys who treated me as if I had been with them all along their cohort journey. I remember many, Richardson, Larkins, Kwaak (my team leader-who would take us up to his place in hohenstaufen during the holidays), Miller, Trimuell, I roomed with Price, Papai, Banks, Dobbins.
I watched as the majority of the Gators left Germany, and welcomed a new bunch of troops of my own (Flaherty, Jones, Robinson, Harley, SGT Suth, Harigal, Poole). These are just a few of the many people I had the good fortune of meeting in my 2 years their. I always told everyone I was going to be a Ranger and Mech life was for the birds. I eventually did and spent the rest of my career with The 82nd Abn Div or as a Ranger Instructor, commissioned in 96, retired as a CPT IN 2005. It all started at Gerp, I was able to grow up and expend alot of my youthful ignorance before choosing the Army as a career. Thanks for all of it guys!! Anyone remember me, give me a yell.

I was stationed at Cooke Barracks in 1957 - 1960 with the 4th Armored division and my company was A-company 4th Quartermaster Capt R. Robbins commanding. We are at present trying to locate the men who were there in that timeframe for a reunion to be held in Tennessee May 2007. So far we have contacted about 30 people. Guys like Stanley Angelley, Ray Brief, Bobby Raines, Jerry Paasch, Charlie Meischner, James Arthurs, Frank Hock, Gwyn Church, Paul Colbert (died this year) I hope that other A Co. people see this and contact us. Too bad that the post has been demolished recently. I made a return trip in 1970 and the post looked the same except that the blocked hats were gone. Bob Groos

From 1976 to 1979 I was a guest member of the troop 202 of the american boy scouts in the cooke barracks; I also did archery as a guest member of the cooke barracks rod & gun club and was the "german kontakt coordinator" of the german-american Kontakt organisation in goeppingen. I was very often hanging around with the people of the Army Community Service in their office near the gate and had lots of fun in the "Rec Centre". For many years I had more american than german friends (army and army dependents). Perhaps somebody remembers me and drops me a line ...

I was at Cooke from early '69 to late '71 assigned to the 504th/501st admin company. Worked in PSD - PZ section (data processing, machine room, "in the vans"). Noticed a post on here by someone mentioning being in some rock bands and bringing up a name I recall - Jim Nelson. He was my neighbor in an off-post apartment building in Salach. I believe he played bass. Other names I recall: Dale Sanders, Bill Smallwood, Dennis Sensing, John Field, John Meyers, Jim Henson. Anyone out there? Also, who could forget Ma Weigle's? Thank you for this website!!! I was stationed at Cooke Barracks from 1960 to 1962 working with the 504th Admin Co. and preparing the pay vouchers for the 4th Quartermaster Battalion. Our fearless leader was CWO Otis Manter. Fellow workers were Bobby Brewer, John Bostic, Dick Rupp, Robert St. Germain, ?? Hallada, Mel Halfon. So many friends I have lost touch with, although I still have contact with Ron DeVries and Billy Aust. Cooke Barracks was a great place then, and living in Goeppingen allowed exploration trips with our 1950 VW in the area every weekend. My wife and I went back in 1991 and couldn't even find our way around Goeppingen anymore. Please write to share memories.

I was a Sgt at the 18th AG Replacement Detachment starting in '75 (when we moved from Boeblingen) until Sept '77.
SFC Wofford was my "boss" when I left, so was surprised to see a picture in the album of our detachment sign with his name. Must've been taken while I was there or shortly after I departed.
Someday, I'd like to go back to S. Germany as a tourist, although I doubt much is as I remember.

Hi All,

I was at Cook Barracks in 1984-1985 with my now ex husband William Schwarz. I really liked Germany when I was there and the people were wonderful. My son found this site when looking for apartment complex we lived in on Post. We also lived off post for a time. Germany was great and the travel was wonderful. Reading the guest book, there are lots of men and women who remember Cook Barracks with fond memories.

Firstly, I want to thank you for this wonderful site. Like most of you, I just happened on this site and its great contents.
Planet Gurp and Cooke Barracks were the first stop in a 14-year Army career. I've always carried fond memories of Gurp and to be able to re-visit through the comments in the posts and photos has been amazing.
I served in HHC and Alpha (Raiders) companies of the 4/16th Infantry, from 86 to 88. In A Co, I was in 1st Platoon and the platoon sergeant was SFC Ziglar. The 1SG was Richard Bucho. Some of the other individuals from 1st Platoon that I remember are Sgt Roberson, Montero, Mitchell, Leadabrand, and Suggs. There are faces that I remember but cannot place.
The things I remember most fondly are the Yak Shak, the Kroc, the Life, Stuttgarter Hofbrau...I remember pulling endless motor pool guard shifts in the snow and taking our sleeping bags with us to wrap up with. Sneaking into the hidden rooms under the motor pool and the rumors of fully-assembled nazi airplanes being found there after the war. The alerts, of course. I don't think I ever served in another unit with the same love for those things. Gurp was a different time, a different Army. It was before I cared about my career. I just had fun, drank like a fish, and drove my APC. That was a lot of fun, and I still miss it. I can't say I agree with what the Germans did with the place after the 1st IDF moved out, but it was theirs first, after all.
I eventually served in more "high-speed" units, as we used to say, but none were as fun as A 4/16, and no other post ever compared to Cooke Barracks or held as many good memories. I feel a kinship with anyone who ever served there.
Thank you

My 3 years at CB (1980 -1983) were the best of 20 in the service. XO of the 1st SPT BN and Div G-4 were great assignments. The Henslick's,Price's, Shaneyfelt's, Barrett's and Barron's were great families to work and socialize with, as well as the other members of the division and battalion staffs.
The soldiers were the best, with few exceptions. It would be great to turn the clock back for a week's vacation with the same people. A trip to Maggie's would be a priority!

Does anyone know where Rick Dodge, the division signal office is located? I'd sure like to take a ride in one of his fancy cars!

I came to Goppingen at the end of '64, as a medical records clerk on my way out to the 46th Medical Bn in Heilbronn. I returned to play soccer (badly) for the 4th AD Tankers, and then managed to wangle a job with the Public Information Office, as sports editor of the Rolling Review, succeeding the legendary Bob Beck. Anyone who knew Bob will agree he deserves the adjective! In the summer of '66, the army decided I should spend my third and final year in uniform in Fort Bragg, NC. Foolish army.

I'm still in touch with guys from the 4th AD PIO, Sal Alvarado, Harry Levins, Pearlie Bourasaw, and Freddie Joe Hamilton III. And I'm best buddies with an old 144th Signal Battalion guy, Paul Lankau, who lives about ten miles from me. We talk about the old times a lot, and they get better each time . . . !

Would love to hear from anyone who remembers me. I'm hard to forget --- I was the only GI at Goppingen with a North London accent. (Not cockney, Lt Levins! North London!)

Good memories, and thanks to all who helped make them so.

Reading through this great guest book has brought back a lot of fond memories. I used to hang around Cooke Barracks during the late 70s (1976-1979) and this is where I met my (ex)husband Danny Coventry from A Co 1/26th INF. He was playing in a rock band called "Stallions" together with Dave Breeden (I think he was in HHC)on the drums, Greg Keyes (C Company) on bass and Dwayne(Hank)Valdez (A Co.) on lead guitar.
We used to party at the Adlerkeller in Eislingen (remember Jack's deer burgers?) or the Kronprinz in Goeppingen. Anyone who remembers me or knows any of them guys, please contact me. I would love to get in ocntact with all of you. I sure hope to be able to get in touch with some of you guys. Danny -where are you now? Hank? Greg? Dave? Fred+Claudia? George? I was stationed in Goeppingen from Jan. 1987 to Dec. 1988 with HHC, 299th SPT BN and worked as a DAS3/DS4 operator with 299th LASSO. Many, many fond memories of Planet Gurp. Late night runs to the Yack Shack for Curry Wursts and fries. Playing golf amidst all of the helicopters on the airfield. I was there when the Rod and Gun Club got moved off-post and wasn't that a big change!! I remember when the new bowling alley opened and the new 299th motor pool opened right next door. My roommate for 1 1/2 years SPC Dennis Huffstetter from Cullman, Alabama. SFC White, SSG Hooks, SSG Marybell Corrati, we had a CW4 whose name I can't remember that he used to invite all of us from the barracks to his quarters on post any time of the day for a beer. All the greatest people that a guy could be stationed with. When they opened the enlisted club in the same building as the cafeteria and the movie theater. Those were some wild times. Weekend trips to Rockfabrik in Ludwigsburg, the Life Disco in Goeppingen. Take care of yourselves, everyone!!

What a great site! It is amazing how many years Cooke Barracks was around and how many individuals were stationed there.
My time at Cooke Barracks was from 1976-1978 with the 18th AG Company. I was the Chaplain's Assistant working with Father Rene Guesnier and Chaplain Hilton. The other Chaplain's Assistants that I worked with were: Paul Seidel, Kirk Holloway, Pruella Scrivner, and Ed Pacheco. Those were some great people to work with. If there is anyone from King's Coffeehouse that remembers the fellowship there please feel free to send me an e-mail. Some others that I would enjoy hearing from are: Debbie Ellerman, PK (Paula)Kessler, Tom and Denise Gainer, Fred Kreiman, Karen Mansell, Kevin (who was a medic, great tennis player, and theologian), Peter and Adel Muller, Rick Bernel COL Patracha and his family (especially their son, Joey, who used to visit the chapel at Cooke Barracks; as well as Carlisle Barracks in PA with Father Francis "Bud" Mara, and Linda Porter who was my roommate when I first arrived.
I still remember each of you and the adventures we shared. I would love to hear from any of those folks from back then. My memories of Goeppingen will be with me forever. I will always be "a BIG RED ONE."

Stationed at Cooke 1968-1971, 144th.
Those were some pretty amazing times!
I played in rock and roll bands (Jam Company, Frontear) in clubs and we (JC Hacker, Denny Mainhart, John Ruman, Jim Nelson, John (JC)Staley, Able Perez! and more) were the house bands for the AYA - lots of great guys and gals there..Beatrice, Karen, David, Cathy, Elaine, and more! Hanging out with Joe Spudic, Rook Lawson, Ed Hockenberry, Harry Neiss, Steve Servidio, and more. We partied pretty hard and did a lot of stuff I never wanted to tell my children about!
I went back to Octoberfest in Munich in 1985 and so much had changed. When I got off the plane the first thing I saw next to the airport was a Burger King. We took a side trip to Goeppingen, ate lunch at Ma Weigles (looked the same, but the food wasn't quite as good as I remembered), drove around (they wouldn't let us on post, this was not too long after the Lebanon bombings of our Marine post), went to Mt. Hohenstaufen .. there was a wine bottle perched on top of the cross at the top of the hill just like when I left in 1971! Amost got run over on the Autobahn at 190KMH (too slow!). Its sad to hear they've torn down so much of the post.
I just remember the fun times & friends, not the war games in tents in winter or Grafenwoer! I'd love to hear from some of you old friends from that era!

I was stationed at Planet Gerp from 87-90. Blue Devils, 4/16. A Grunt first and then transferred to HHC in the Transportation unit. My best memories come from this place where I had great friends, but unfortunately lost touch with most of them. The dreams I still have about Gurp prompted me to post on this guest book. I would like to hear from any one that may remember me. One of my best friends was Ed Curl, I hope I spelled that correctly. He was from Mass.. Some names I remember are , Crumback (my last roommate), aka Nando from LA,CA., the kid from Bayonne, NJ who married the German girl and drove a Gulf VW, Tracie (medic from Edison NJ) I am bad with names, but remember all of their faces. I hope to hear from anyone soon, so that we can share old memories.

Wow! Talk about a trip down memory lane!

Hi Everyone, I served with the 504th Admin Co in the office of the AG from '69-'71. We mostly had two distinct groups - those from Texas and the other guys from New York - What a cultural contrast! But it worked and each of us walked away with an appreciation of different worlds.

Even though - "Been there-done that!", It was a pleasure to walk those steps again with all of you.

Enjoyed it so much I have to borrow a statement, "I'll be back!"

I went 5th,6th at the annex (was a three room tar paper shack or so it seemed) then 7th and 8th at the main school. The second floor was the Jr high. Frau Bader and Frau Traska (sp) were the German teachers. The AYA was right behind us, became a fairly good pool player by the time we left. I still think of that place as the good old days.

I was absolutely amazed to find this site! I had typed in the google window Goeppingen, Germany and there came Cooke Barracks. I would like to send my deepest sympathy to Tracy Keeney (Rivest). She signed the guest book just last month. During the period April 1982 thru July of 1985 I served at Cooke Barracks as the Legal Administrator (my first assignment as a newly appointed Warrant Officer)in the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate (SJA). At that time then Major Rivest was the Deputy SJA and LTC Anthony Wagner was the SJA. Major Rivest was promoted to LTC while serving as the Deputy. I remember attending a birthday party for Major Rivest at the home of Major Rivest, Rosemary and their family. During the party we watched a video of the movie "Arthur" starring Dudley Moore. Major Rivest really enjoyed the movie and everyone had a great time. Tracy, I know that your father was a good father, soldier, and compassionate man. God bless everyone.

I was with HHC 1st IDF Sig Plt from 84 - 87. I'm starting to remember it all now; running the relay against the grunts with Sgt. Blakey, we won, playing with the signal platoon flag football team and beating the entire post, coaching the "brats", that's dependents, to the USAEUR Soccer Championships, the only trophy I've ever kept, I won't mention how bad the men's team was. Oh yeah, a friend and I borrowed a car and in the middle of winter, unable to see out the windshield drove off post chased a school bus of kids, driven by nuns, off the road and into a cornfield. I like that story better than the other. Gremlins are everywhere.

I was looking for information on a German Fest here in NJ and I came upon this site. What a great site. The reason I was looking for the German fest was because of all the German fun I had while stationed at Cooke. I was the Forward Air Control track driver from 1978-79. I was in 1/26, HHC S-3 I guess, it was so long ago I forgot how to write it. I'll have to check my DD214 I guess. Our barracks were all the way at the end of the post and I was on the 3rd floor with Mitch Ryan and Mark Handy. What a group. I have a heavy cardboard street map of the area, with advertisements for local businesses, that is hanging on the wall in my garage, every now and then I look at those roads that I used to walk on every night and trace my route down to town and back.
What luck to be stationed at a small kaserne, I got out and made a bunch of friends, Jane and Petra come to mind right away. I remember the KronePrinzen and Enzo, what great pizzas. Also the German-American fest and sneaking through the hole in the fence to go to Geislingen and the Adler Keller to drink Geisermalts. I never remember coming back though! I remember our short timer party where Steve Geisenger (I think) dispatched a deuce and a half to take all the beer and wine we had to a local park. Sitting in the back with all that booze while he talked with the MPs. We were a crazy bunch. But we trained hard too.
I remember my first field exercise and the mud and then I threw a track on the way home! And the winter cold, boy was it cold there. But they took us on a bus to Helle once to show us the wall and that was all I needed to see to know why I was in uniform.
Someone mentioned they don't see postings from this time period often and I had noticed the same thing. There weren't a lot of people joining the military then and we were understrength, I remember that too. But I'm glad I joined, I take pride in telling people I'm a veteran and I had good time serving with so many others. At least now when I look back on it, when I was there I might have said something else!

I was stationed there from 74' to 75'. I was with the aircraft maintenance company (409th ?) getting old and it was the seventies. I noticed in some of the photos that the air strip seems to be paved. I could swear it was grass when I was there.

What an incredible journey I've taken today discovering the pictures of Cooke Barracks and comments left by so many soldiers, veterans, dependents and civilians! I served with STARPAC at Cooke Barracks from late 73 to late 75. When I arrived on base I was one of only two WACs on there, eventually we were joined by a dozen or so others in the MP and Transportation units. My father, Arthur Long, was also stationed there with the Big Red One (which, by the way was welcomed back officially to day to Kansas!) He worked on the firing range for a while. He also drew the maps for Grafenwohr training. If anyone was there during that time you might remember him from the Rod and Gun Club as "one beer Art" or something like that. Seems he'd fall asleep after just one beer! I fondly remember being welcomed into the fold of the chapel's coffee house ministry and becoming very active with that group. We toured Israel in March of 75 and I was baptized in the Jordan River. I'd love to correspond with anyone who served during that time!

Wow- I totally "stumbled" onto the site! I didn't even know they'd closed down Cooke! Those "post" Cooke photos break my heart!
My father was LTC Joseph Rivest, who served as Deputy Staff Judge Advocate with JAG from '81-83. He passed away in November of 2001. My mother Rosemary was heavily involved with the Officer's Wives Club and started a mother's outreach program through Army Community Services.
I went to 8th grade at the elementary school on the post, and Mr. Truty was my homeroom teacher. (I saw your post on here Mrs. Truty!) I remember spending HOURS in his class, soaking all those pinecones and wiring them together for a huge Christmas decoration for the front door. I think it was supposed to be a partridge?? I also loved Mrs. Pigg's English class.
We were introduced to some great classic American films in her class.
Then there was my freshman year, when we got to ride that cool "stretchy" bus all the way to Stuttgart for high school. If I remember right, we caught that bus at 6:30am!
Let's see-- favorite memories. My all time favorite would be a cross-country skiing/hiking trip in Austria, that our family went on with a large group from the post. At the end of the hike, we took a ski lift to the top of a mountain-- with everything covered in snow, and the clouds so high, that all you could see were the snow covered tips of other mountains around us. Everything else was completely under a blanket of blinding white clouds. It was simply breathtaking, and to this day is what I consider to be the most beautiful sight in nature that I've ever seen.
Anyone who remembers my mother Rosemary, please email me-- I'd love to get her in touch with you.

I was assigned to 504th Admin from June '67 to Jun '69 with duties in PSD. I personally knew both of the guys that deserted. I won't use their names in this forum. They went to Sweden from what we heard. The time frame is a bit fuzzy but I would say that sometime in '68 they went on leave to Amsterdam and failed to return. Lots of crazy things were going on at that time, especially in Amsterdam. It was a popular leave destination for GI's. I guess they got a better offer. The threat of being sent to Vietnam was not a factor and to the best of my knowledge, neither of them entertained any antiwar sentiments, at least not outwardly. One of the guys only had approximately 6 months left on his enlistment. The entire time I was in the 504th, nobody was levied to Vietnam from our unit. We were the guys pulling the personnel folders for those levied to Vietnam. Most of them were combat arms MOS's being sent from the line units. We had a few guys that volunteered to go for personal reasons.

From what I heard from others thatI kept in contact with, these guys returned sometime after I left in June, 1969 but before they could be brought to Court Martial or whatever the Army decided to do with them, they bolted again. That's the last I heard on the subject. Still cooling their heels in Stockholm I guess.

If Chris Harvey in Portland, Maine reads this, Hi Harv! My best to the family, especially little Rocco.

I was in the 504th from early 1963 until June 1965. During that period, probably in 1964, 2 504th clerks went on leave to drive to Berlin. Instead of taking the authorized route they attempted a short cut. They were picked up by the British Army a few klicks from the East German border. The Co and 1st Sgt had to fly to the British Sector to retrieve them. I don't think anything happened to them, it was considered poor judgement and bad map reading.
Perhaps their story got passed along and enlarged upon and became the story of the 2 deserters in 1967.

I worked in the PSD until the end of April 1968 and never even heard of that incident. Might it have happened after I left?

By then the big levies of USAREUR troups to Vietnam were over and we were being built back up to something approaching authorized strength. But orders to Vietnam were still coming down, and that might have had something to do with it.

Now a question that has not been answered--the 504th Admin Co had two clerks from PSD who went AWOL and deserted in the 67/68 timeframe. Does anyone remember the outcome-as if these guys ever returned, etc. Am curious, nothing else.

Anyone remember the trips to the Canadian AFB PX to buy the stereo and camera equipment not available at the local PX. One time the Army bus got stuck in gear and we waited till dark for a replacement bus to come to the rescue.

I believe this occurred in 1971, the same year that I left the Army, and came back to the states. My most lasting impression I have of Germany is how OLD it is, compared to the States. The thought of walking streets that were in existence when Columbus sailed to America, just blows my mind, even to this day.

If anyone is there from those "hippie days" of 69, 70, thru 71, would love to hear from you.

I was at Cooke Barracks from March 1976 to March 1978.
Was a medic and the Training NCO for HHC 1/26th Inf, Blue Spaders. LTC Jouwan, and LTC Mullenix were the Bn Cdrs while I was there. Friends I remember, LT Mike Petersen, "BIG Will" Williams (medic), Don Hunt, Melvin Christie (he died a few years after he retired-cancer), Mario Tamayo, Mike Acosta, SGT Gooch, Jack and Annie from the Adler Keller, Maggies Canteen, Steve Gessenger (HHC), 1sg Propst, I wish I could remember everyone else. Played softball and flag football with alot of these guys. I remember "BIG BEAR" that died when he wrecked his motorcycle. I came back to Cooke Barracks in 80-83, to buy some stuff for my unit (2/32 armor, Kirchgoins).

I was adopted as a newborn by a german family and I am looking for my natural mother.

I was born on the 11th November 1971 in the Hospital at Cooke-Barracks. The Name of my mother was/is Martha R. (Rae) Cunningham, born herself on the 13th Nov 1953 - she became 18 two days after given Birth to me - today she is 52.

Martha R. Cunningham lived at "Barrack 703" in Schwäbisch-Gmünd near Göppingen - thats probably the Hardt- or Bismarck-Baracks. Both of the Baracks are closed today, in the early 70s the 56th Field Artillery was located there. In the records of the adoption no father was mentioned - she was not married. I found out, that she went back to the States. I don't know where they went but originally she's from Wisconsin.

The question is, if a 17 year old girl was member of the army or lived here in germany with her parents. In the meantime Martha R. Cunningham might be married and has a different last name.

If anyone knows her I would be very thankful for any hint.

I spent most of 1964 at Cooke Barracks in the 404th MP Company. On Dec 31 of that year, I was PCSed to the 404th MP Det. at Bamberg.
I can't recall off-hand any time in my life that I was happier. A beautiful countryside, a nice town, and wonderful people. In fact I married a girl from Geislingen. After 41 years, we're still stuck with each other. All in all, not too bad.
If anyone that knew me there would care to write, I'd be most honored.

I read this and was immediately taken back to memory lane and the times spent at the "PLANET". I was stationed at GERP from 85-88 with the "Delta Dogs" 4/16, and living in the "Castle" on the hill, needless to say lots and lots of memories of the CB. Would like to shout out to some of my "compadres" in 2nd PLT. The CAJUN Torbert, "Wink" Winkler, Sutton, T.C Williams, (Shorty) Trombley (ECO), K.Kumar, K.West, Wheeler, Rey Suero, SSG Jones (3rd), 1SGT Davis, "SWAB" Swoboda, and our illustrious Squad Leader, the Mercedes MAN, SSG GIBSON. The only man I know who was the lightest man in the squad and thought he could take us all on. It was all FUN. After I left "GERP" I went to Fort Lewis and lost touch with my GERP Brothers. Then I caught up with some of them at Fort ORD, and lot of the folks were stationed there with 7th ID (light). To some of the other notables, to my brothers in BRAVO, 4/16, "Angel Rodriguez", SGT Vaa (BOAT), 1LT Rojas, and the rest of my rugby crew at Bravo. If some of you are in my area, ping me by e-mail or call me so we can update. Would love to hear from some of the folks and friends from the "PLANET". By the way, for some of you to remember who I am, I was on the front page of the 1stIDF newspaper as the machine gunner during the Franconian Shield FTX at Schweinfurt, where we spent an extra week out there looking for a machine gun. "Hands across German BEET fields, day and night" I must have lost 12-17 lbs out there.

I have to thank the people who run this site. I found the most important person in my life right here. You have no idea of the importance of a site like this. I was at Cooke Barracks from June 80 to January of 82. I was having difficulty adjusting and found very little help within my new command. It took some time for me to come around and be the soldier I new I could be. It took a civilian with a good and caring heart to show me what was important. Once I turned the corner the pride of service returned. Although my tour in Germany was difficult, the good memories are the ones I want to remember now. German American Week, touring the country, Rock concerts and meeting the people of Germany was the best of times. A new command with good NCO's like 1st Sgt. Kingeter and Officers like Cpt. Wolfe were great to work for. There professionalism made most of my tour a real pleasure. Thanks goes out to all leaders of this caliber. Cooke Barracks is gone now. Hard to wrap my head around that one. CB will live in our memories and our stories for generations to come. Those of us who lived and loved at CB looked for a place to tell a story, find a friend or loved one, and reconnect with an important piece of our past. To the friends I made, thanks for the memories. TO the rest... Sorry!

Wow! What a great site. I found it through Dave Weissinger. This site led him to search out those of us assigned to OL-M 601st, later OL-L 602d, the "blue-suiters". He tracked me down almost 20 years to the month from when I left. I was there from '84 - '86. Lots of memories. One of the best assignments I had. Dave, you mentioned Sabine Cizik and her family. I too want to thank them, they had a big part in making my stay at Plant Gerp a good one. I hope you all are doing ok.

Hi,
some of you will remember that I posted some lines regarding the "rebuilding" of the old MP Station in GP/CB. It has been some time that I gave a last feedback, sorry for that.

To give a quick feedback. The old MP Station is just being rebuilt to a Bar/Restaurant and for the late hours a club with a special VIP lounge. This has been a 12 month ongoing project as the building had to nearly be built up again a 100%.

Last week we had the "Fassanstich", this means that the brewery gave a 100 liters of beer and the new owner invited all of the people who are/were involved in the project. It was a great party and I got the info that "Die Wache" (new name) will have its grand opening in 8-10 weeks. The new owner knows that it has taken now over one year but his comment was: "I want to open a special location and not a half finished "PUB"!" I think this is the right way and we are all still very exited how it will look like. I took some pics, but was asked not to public them.

I will try to keep closer to the updates and maybe I will be able to persuade him to send some pics.

That's all for now,

Best regards,
MIKE

I came across the website and I want to thank you guys for the memories. I retired in '96 and have been working on training contracts for the Army ever since. Want to pass a warm hello to Bill Burns and his family, I remember the wedding so very well.

My wife and I had the opportunity to swing by Planet Gerp in the Fall of 2005. It took a bit of digging deep in my memory to maneuver through Goeppingens new traffic patterns, but we finally made it to where Cooke Barracks used to be. Most of the 1-26/4-16 barracks buildings are gone, but many of the buildings around the airfield are still standing, along with new construction. The place certainly looked more like a ghost town than what we remembered. I tried to find the old Rattstube in Geislingen and the great Chinese food place that we enjoyed so well in Donsdorf. Neither was there. Guess you can never go back.

Years ago, I ran into Jim O'Donnel (CDR, Co C, 1-26; later S-3 4-16) when he was a colonel, working in the TRADOC IG office. He and I shared some great memories.

One final comment to all of the guys in 4-16 who survived "The Basso-matic". If nothing else, it made us stronger.

Per David's request, here is my original post. Best to all...

Dear Sir,
I stumbled across your website while looking up Ulm for a friend who is travelling there for a wedding this spring. I am a 54 year-old man whose father was a captain/major in the 144SB / 4th AD, stationed in Ulm and Goppingen from 1956-1960. I don't remember much of Ulm, other than the Munster but I remember playing with other friends who lived in the Glass House on top of the hill, at Goeppingen, on the base, in an old German hanger. My father was a Signal officer and I've found the fathers of several friends and friends of his who came to dinner occasionally, including Lt. Bill Vance, Capt. Watts, Bill Pera, Bob Mills, and Tom Buckley, in your photographs. I am surprised that my father isn't in one of them but I have some pictures in my basement showing him getting his major's oak leaves from General O'meara.
I was one of a group of kids that discovered an entrance to tunnels under the base just to the left of the main gate, facing it, in the trees. A friend of mine was digging and playing "Army" with several others one day when he fell into the ground. We later came back with candles and flashlights and slid down a 6-8' hole about 2' in diameter and found ourselves in an arched tunnel with brick walls and ceiling. We eventually explored several connecting tunnels at the end of the main tunnel but were finally kicked out after the MP's found out about it and sealed them up. While playing in the woods behind the Glass House, we also discovered several bunkers , one of which had live German potatoe masher-type grenades (which we left alone and told our fathers about) and a rusted and bent MG42 German machine gun. The MPs came again, removed the grenades but gave us the MG42. It was a wonderful place to be a kid. Thanks for a lot of memories. Unfortunately, Col. Meeker has passed on but he would have enjoyed this site a lot.

Best regards,

Frank Meeker (III)

"Pagoda Baker, this is George one niner, come in. please!" I don't remember many routine MP radio messages, but I do remember, "Pulling Gate", "General's Detail", and "Town Patrol" and sitting on duty at Division Headquarters. General Booth came in late one night and caught me nodding but he didn't say anything. A belated "Thanks, General!"

Hello All,
I was with HHC 4/16th from Oct 86-Dec 88. Worked at the motorpool with the track service section. See if any of these names ring a bell to you: Sean Perry ( still see him a couple times a year, were best man at each others weddings), SFC David Rancourt, SGT Michael Berry, SGT David Sabin, SPC Robert Arthurs, SPC James Tesner, SPC Robert Spears, SPC Brian Gordon,SFC Joe Gay, SSG Jack Fuegman, SGT McElroy, SSG Russell Scott, SPC Ronald Rogala, Joe Story (last 2 were in the welding shop),SPC Jim Thacker SPC Jim Stephens,
I know there are more names, but this was 17 years ago, and sometimes the memory fades!
Had a great time over there.
Went to Germany for vacation in 1993, could not get on post as it was a refugee camp at tht time.
Went there again in 1998 with the army reserves (yup I stayed in as a part timer), got on this time, some areas were being used by local gov. and the gym was a t.v. studio for a kids program.
Went again in 2001 on my honeymoon, many buildings were being torn down, and more local businesses were moving in. The old HHC 4/16 barracks at the top of the hill were a temporary city hall while the "rathaus" was being renovated.
Anyone who remembers any of these folks fell free to drop me a line.

Hey Now,

I was a 12 year old dependent at Cooke Barracks, from 1982 to 1983. I attended 7th grade at the elementary school right in my front yard.

Girls I remember: Linda Donnely - I loved her...had the biggest crush on her, even after we went back to the States...Wendy (those burgondy cordoroy pants...mmmmmm), Christine - super pretty and nice girl), Angela, - there were some older girls like 13, 14 & 15...they didnt associate with me, but they were cute!

Dudes I remember - Pancho and Gilbert played on my basketball team...Jimmy Dean Barrow & his brother Dee...the dude that lived up stairs, Carlos and his brother Andrew (jerk)....another kid - Jason Cooley...everyone was in to AC/DC back then.

My 7th grade teacher was a total idiot - Mr. Weldon...couldnt even hardly read or do math...
One cool teacher was Mr. Truty...I think he taught science

Tschuss!

I was in Goeppingen March, 21st 2006 and visited Cooke Barracks for the first time after 39 years.
Was also able to visit Mama Weigle and her daughter Anita "Sissi" who are the owners of Cafe Weigle.
Brought back old memories of my days with 404th MP Company when I was stationed from the years 1964-67.
I look forward to come back to the new guest house "Die Wache" (The guard) what used to be the gate house and MP Station for Cooke Barracks.
The new owner (René Nakouzi) said sometime in the future there will be a German-American Friendship Reunion maybe next year.
He mentioned he would like to have memorabilia from the MPs stationed at Cooke Barracks to put on display.

You can contact my son Richard Nirschl in Germany by email [at the email link] or contact
myself. I will forward this also to Richard.

I look forward to hearing from former 404th MPs that served during my time with the 4th Armored Division from 1964 to 1967.

I was stationed with the 504th admin co from may 63 thru nov 64, assigned to the records section. SFC Strobe was the NCOIC at that time. I was a SP5 in charge of Team #8 and had some of the best clerks in the building. I remember Barry Dolan, Ed Miller,Peter Ward,John Hurley, and M.Lea and so many more. Dolan and I bought a car together.I remember a few MP T.Henessey, Carney. I was first stationed with the 2/33 Armor in Erlangen,Germany.
I can honestly say that Goeppingen was the best overseas assignments that I have had thoughout my career. Like most of us that were asigned there, we were young kids (18-19-20 years old), we kinda grew up in Goeppingen learning about life, both military and how to become a man. (There weren't any female soldiers on Cooke at that time).
I can remember going to town and visiting the different gasthaus that were so friendly to the GI and some that were not so friendly. We either walked or got a taxi at the MP station for a mark or two.

I was assigned to the battalion staff, A Company, and C Company 4-16th from 83 - 86. Goeppingen was without a doubt the nicest place I've ever lived in. The only drawback was that we were always busy preparing to go the field, in the field, or recovering from being in the field.

Here are some immediate memories: Standing-by in the motor pool for hours waiting for LTC Basso to check all our dipsticks, full equipment layouts behind the M113's, stop and go driving all day in Reforger convoys, the alerts with the frenzied activiy of loading up all the ammunition as it was carried from the basement storage area, the alert on a payday Friday afternoon when half the soldiers were at the Life and 'feeling good', the exercise over Thanksgiving that we dubbed "French Turkey" because it was a tasking to provide targets for the French special operations, herds of sheep at Munsingen, being as cold as I could be and wondering if my feet were frozen as I stood in the hatch of an APC driving around Graf to a range early in the morning, M60 machineguns that were so worn out they rattled all the time and constantly jammed, being restricted to the barracks and practicing riot control every single Easter holiday because of the peace protests over in Scwabish Gmund, wheat beer on the patio of the club on a perfect summer afternoon, the summer of 83 when it was so hot the ashphalt was too soft to move the tracked vehicles. I guess I could go on, and on.

Great memories!

Correction to my last post: the Czech border duty was in Weiden at a place called Camp Pitman. How the hell could I forget? Too many Stuttgarter Hofbraus (Ein bier, bitte?) at the Golden Ox I guess. Used to be in 2nd platoon under SFC Tramell(with his blue Jaguar car)and remember Ron Ivory, Kiko Martinez, Craig Beckwith, SSG Miller, Cpl Irving, Michael S. McMillian, Mike Frietas, Rich "gooch" Scott, Scott Reed, John Phillips, Jeff Hiltz. I once organized a "Jungle Juice" party behind our barracks. Had a bunch of newbies come in; all got drunk and puked everywhere. I have MANY photo's to send in to this site.

Alpha 4/16th 'Semper Paratus". I served from Dec '87-Dec '89. Best time of my life and remember the guys like it was yesterday. The over-seas experience, when you and your platoon bro's were inseparable; you always went to Stuttgart with a battle buddy (House of Three Colors, anyone?) Winter/Summer Graf; Hohenfelds; running the trails out the "back gate" next to our company area; deployed on the Czech border in '88 for 2 months (Camp Widen) for border duty against those pesky Russians. When us enlisted soldiers RAN the NCO club, hands down; participating in the Hohenstaufenlauf competition; being Capt. Todd's guidon bearer while running them damn hills; and of course sun, rain, snow all in the same damn day. That was life on Planet Goerp.

Army brat. My dad was stationed at Cooke Barracks from '84 thru '87. Reading some of the emails from other Army brats brings back lots of memories. I went to Stuttgart American H.S. for 3 years. Played DYA baseball, basketball, and soccer. The best year was when we put "Gurp" on the map by winning the USAREUR Championship in Munich led by Coach De Jesus (Capt). I lived in Eislingen Housing (I remember Stacey Wheeler). I made many good friends that I would like to chit-chat with one day again. I still keep in touch with my best friend Jose De Jesus. I remember the long bus ride to school everyday but at least we got to catch up on some sleep. Some of my friends were Bruce Barnes, Booca and Eric Williams, Tito Perez, Herald (Duck), Jimmy Allen, Roderic, and many others. I remember some of the girls too--Melissa, Silky, Geri, Pam, and Kim to name a few.

I was at Cooke Bk's.from 1982 Thur 1985. I was in Charlie Company 2nd Plt. 1/24 Inf. later 4/16 Inf. My best friend was in CSC his name was Jeff Adkins. We spent a lot of time on the week ends on the train. Most of the time we would go to Stuttgart and go to the clubs on Konig Strasse. I was amazed to see all the artist doing their art in chalk on the streets there. We always got there earlier enough to see different parts of the city before we got down to drinking. After all that's my they sent us to Germany. My favorite beer was Stuttgarter Hofbrau.
I did spend a lot of my off time in Gerp. Mostly at the MIAKFER they played some really good music and the locals were real friendly. In the summer we spent the weekends at the swim bad.I do have a lot of pictures I will post when I get the time to scan them in. I remember when they put the slot machines in the Enlisted and NCO clubs.
I had my E-5 promotion party at the Rod and Gun Club. It was up behind the snack bar then. I think that later moved it. Here are a few of the names of friends I had at Cooke Barracks. Mike Troute, David Carlson, SSG. Boswell, SFC. Oberlender, Fitzgerald (Spiderman), Sgt. Kent Stalker, SSG. Calix, SFC.Don Lyles. These are only a few of the friends I had after 20 years I know I have forgotten a lot of names, but I can still see their faces.
To finish up I went to Germany with a duffel bag and left with some good memories and a great wife. She is from a village not far from Cooke Barracks call Adelberg. We have been married for 22 years and have three children.
I hope to hear from from some old friends.

Second post: I was an MP from 86 to 89. I also worked for CID for a while. I drank a lot of beer back then as well so the whole thing is basically a blur. But I remember when the bomb went off on the air field. I guess we never figured out who did that. I remember a fight in one of the barracks that emptied everyone out into the hall. The guys in 4/16 who were keeping a prostitute in their barracks. Some of the wacko NCO's we had....I image they are all still in. Ahhh...PFC Kilgore wrecking a jeep at Graf. Going to Morocco.....driving around in jeeps in January without tops on. I remember going out with Jessee and Homer and Homer waking up in a telephone booth. Greg Wilson getting hit in the head with a bottle at the main gate. Asking Jeff Clarke how we ended up in such a bizaro world, Trashing Sgt. Calahan's house....Pryzabachi filling up his car with snow on night shift. That's right it was us... Lets see what else.....eating all that Kinpchee, that Sgt. Roberson's wife made. Chasing the cuy who ran the main gate, catching him in Ware Circle and Parker putting a cigarette out in his fore head. The girl who kicked Twinning between the legs....PFC Wells and his buffoonery. I always tell everyone I hated my experience in Germany. But you know what....we did have some good times. And I miss you guys. Some of my good friends were: Sgt. Roberson, Jeff Clarke, Wells, Sabine (cat woman), Ott, Parker, Twinning (yes you too), SFC. Vigue, the desk Sergent who could fix anything with a wood screw (forget his name), Roy Keys, Jessee, Homer, Greg Wilson, Keith Andrew...Lt. Bigelow. Kilgore, Sgt. Colomb, Sgt. Walker and Bittle....we have lot of stories!!

Found this site by accident. I was looking into the history of Goppingen during WW2, and saw references to Cooke Barracks. What a trip to the past.
I was stationed in Gerp from Jan,76 to June,79. I was part of Co.D, 1st Med.BN. Our barracks were located right across the parking lot from the headquarters building,1st IDF. We were known as "Delta Head" during that time. What a great group of people. Had some wonderful times, as well as crappy times out in the field.
Sure would like to know what happened to some of the people I was there with. Sal Mercado,Dave Reineke,Dave Laird,"Bear",Dean Martin, etc.
Anyway, it was really a great time, and one that will stay with me forever. Too bad the place is pretty much gone. Oh well, it'll live in my mind as long as I do. Take care, all you Gerp vets! I can be reached at [the email link].

I was in the USAF, stationed at "Gerp" from June of 84 to June of 86. At the time, I was an Airman with the ALO. I was attached to the 4-16th and did the CAS for them. We worked out of the OLD hangar near the aviation guys next door at the big hangar. I found this site by accident and then spent hours reading and looking at the pics. Lots of good memories of the people. Glad to see Russ Carpenter signed on. He was my room mate for a while. We stayed in barracks with the MPs near the airfield and then we moved to a new building in 86?. Also saw a line by Sabine Cizik. Her family was great and made my stay in Germany a memorable one. I'll be dropping lines to them. Anyone hear from any other USAF / ALO guys there, let me know. Russ had it right when he mentioned the Rastube, Yak shak, Roxy etc. All good times. Thanks for the walk down memory lane and thanks to Dave (webmaster) for putting this together. Sad to see Gerp changed so much, but darn glad I spent time there.

I was stationed at Cooke Barracks with my family from 1960-65. My father, Robert L. Burton (Sgt) was a photographer and had an extensive collection of photos of the base during that time and the surrounding area. We were there when President Kennedy was killed and my father's photo of Kennedy in the clouds looking down on the service at the base was published in the base paper and in the states.

I have such fond memories of living on base and the fun we had - I think anyone living there at that time would remember my father - he was known for his practical jokes, our Halloween haunted house and his famous parties at our apartment.

I would love to hear from anyone who lived there at that time and knew my parents. Helen & Robert Burton.

Does anyone remember when the tank went around the base at Christmas passing out candy to us kids? That was my Dad.

It was a great experience.

I was stationed at Cooke Barracks from 1985-1988. I served in 4-16 IN, in a number of different companies and on the battalion staff. As with most "first" assignments in the Army, you tend to appreciate having "been there" more and more as the years go by. Some activities that readily come to mind are jumping on B-10 and heading to Robinson Barracks, training in the Spittalwald, running to the top of the Hohenstaufen, weekly dinners with good friends at "La Boca" restaurant, hitting the "Yak Shak" for a curry wurst and some pommes, and going out to the "Longhorn Saloon" and the "Koenigshof" in Stuttgart, and "The Dream" in Geislingen. Good friends and good times could all be found in Goeppingen!

I discovered your very informative website only recently and like the way you put it together. It brought back pleasant memories of events that are now over 46 years old.

I was a draftee from Cliffside Park, New Jersey. Of my two-year commitment (9/58 - 9/60), I spent the first six months training in Fort Dix, Fort Knox, and Aberdeen Proving Ground. In April 1959 I arrived at Headquarters & Company "A", 126th Ordnance Battalion, 4th Armored Division, Cooke Barracks. I was stationed there until my discharge in September 1960. As a major items supply clerk, I kept track of the Division's inventory of tanks, personnel carriers and all wheeled vehicles. The job required frequent visits to our support units in Erlangen, Zirndorf, Crailsheim, Schwaebisch Gmuend, Neu Ulm, Schwabach and to the US Army Training Base in Grafenwoehr. My recollections of that time period are summarized in the attached
"Memories of A Veteran". I am also attaching 7 photographs. If you consider it worth your while, please feel free to publish portions or all of it on your web site. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who served with me.

Walter Mossner, HQ & Co "A" 126th Ord Bn, 4th AD, 4/59 - 9/60.

Most troops who were at Cooke from 88 to 90 might remember me as one of the Customs MP's that took care of your hold baggage & household goods before you rotated home to the States. Also, I gave the Inprocessing Briefing for Customs to all the new arrivals up at the replacement center. Our office was in the basement of the NCO Barracks in the housing area.

I loved my time in Goeppingen and truly miss the wonderful people of Swabia. It was 2 of the best years of my life, and after Goeppingen, the next 2 years at Fort Riley were a serious let-down.

When Lore' Bader told me about this site a couple of years ago I immediately checked it out and saw many familiar names. I arrived at Goeppingen American School in Aug. of 76 and left in June of 88. I had the great pleasure of teaching the best kids in the world for 12 years in grades 2, 3, and 4. I loved every minute of my life as a DoDDS Dolly, made and have kept wonderful friends, and came home with my husband (Phil who was a science teacher and Assist. Principal there). We return to Germany every couple of years to visit Frau Bader and other German friends and have seen the changes in Goeppingen and at Cooke Barracks. But the memories don't change. Still see Ms. Dalton, Ms. Otzelberger, Mr. Lavelle, Ms. Opheim (Hoercher), Ms. Jackson, Ms. Munro-Downs, and Ms. Purcell here in the states. Thanks to this site I've also been back in contact with Ms. Feeney. Thanks for this site! :thumb:

Wow, great site! Loved looking at all the pictures. Certainly brings back a lot of memories. I was with the 48th Trans from July 1969 thru January 1972. I remember the MP station at the front gate very well although, as I recall, It wasn't by choice……Ahem. Anyway, the majority of my memories are fond ones. Kept up with a few of the guys for a couple of years after my ETS but have lost touch over the years. I especially remember the little cafe on the back side and underneath our hanger. They made a Ham & Egg sandwich that was out of this world! Never have been able to duplicate it. It was greasy as all get out but here I am 34 years later and I remember it like it was yesterday. I really miss the Bratwurst Stands too. Do they still eat Fries with Mayonnaise? That was the best! The Autobahn was a blast too! Just when you thought you must be going a million mph and started day dreaming that you were leading the last lap of the Daytona 500 you'd look in the mirror to find someone flashing their high beams at you to move over and then, they'd pass you like you were standing still. Well, that's a fine how-do-you-do! I could go on forever. It would be great to here from some of the guys I served with just to catch up.

Happy New Year to all and especially to Dave Wisniewski, who has brought us all together with CookeBarracks.com. By the way, the Cooke Barracks chronology has been slightly updated and has a new link to an interesting photo; even if you've already seen it, check it out again.

To all who had the pleasure of serving at Cooke Barracks, thank you for providing a place for old friend to come together.  I was in Alpha Co 299th from 1984 to 1987.  I enjoyed my tour at Cooke Barracks and experienced the many wonders of Goeppingen and the Stuttgart area.  I too was sad when I had to leave.  I was introduced to many nice things during that time and developed many lasting friendships that I treasure to this day.  If any one remembers me please drop me a line.

I was in Charlie Co.  1979-1982  had a lot of fun trained hard.  I got there in the fall of 1979 and the everybody was at Hoenfels doing an ARTEP.  Man it was fun while I was part of the rear detachment.  I remember going out to Hoenfels and the mud, the grime, and the tents.  That was my first of many training exercises.  Couldn't ask to be with greater guys though, Col. Faley was really something else.  Made a lot of friends there wonder where everybody is at.  I hardly see posts from Spaders from my era.  I remember reading the unit motto "No Mission Too Difficult, No Sacrafice Too Great Duty First!  From reading it I knew I was assigned to a very highly decorated unit (something I still bragg about to this day).  It was also the best unit I ever served in during my years in the US Army

I just want to say Happy New Years to All and to keep up with the entries.  It is great to see so many people come to this website with so many memories.  I was at Cooke Barracks from 1985-1988.  My father was in 299th.  I graduated from Stuttgart High School.  I had so many friends at Cooke Barracks.  It became one of my most favorite places.  I hated it when I had to leave.  I would be happy to hear from anyone who would like to take a walk down memory lane.

Happy New year to all those who served at Cooke Barracks. I served with the famous Blue Spaders, B Co 1/26th In from 1977-1980. It was the best unit in my 20+years in the US Army. Once a Blue Spader, always a Blue Spader. God Bless all our soldiers that served then, and all that serve today. SFC (ret) Dan Burton

I was stationed @ Cooke from June 1982- March 1984. I was one of the last to serve with the 573rd S & S Co. (The infamous 3rd Herd!) 1st Spt. Battalion. A few months before I ETS' we transitioned into A Co. 299th Support Battalion. Had a great time driving over a good deal of S/W Germany and spent time @ Graf, Hoenfels, Vilsec, etc. I miss the guys (Barney, Wilbur, Dennis Hazeltine, Red, Gump, SSG.Dillard, Tommy(sadly deceased), Mark Lagatta, Kenny Wayne Mims, Mark Brooks, SFC Smith, and so many others) who helped me grow up. It was a great time in my life.

Happy New Year! I hope this year brings you happiness and health.

To begin the new year, I've set up this new guestbook with many more features than the old one which served us well for over three years. The change was necessary because of childish indiividuals who insisted on defacing the guestbook with profanity and offensive vocabulary (I didn't know children knew those words). This new guestbook should save me an hour a day cleaning up after the kids.

I was stationed at Cooke Barracks from 9/70 - 3/71 with the 404th MP Co. On 16Mar71, I was involved in an auto accident that medivaced me to Valley Forge Hospital where I spent the better part of a year. Because of amnesia from brain damage and the loss of my personal posessions during transit, I'm hoping to piece together names
and faces some day.Hopefully, I'll find someone who can provide details about the accident.

This site has been a wonderful labor of love and I'm honored to be able to share CookeBarracks.com with you.
